Rocky's Not The Real Thing

City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo and the man who has the job Rocky wants - State Attorney General Bill Lockyer - are out to protect you from a scourge that is ruining our society, corrupting our children and is the basis of all crime in the city.

Mexican Coke.

No, its not that kind of coke, but its something from Mexico that Delgadillo and Lockyer actually want to deport. Its the real thing, Coca Cola, bottled and manufactured south of the border and sold in many stores around Southern California.

The product is primarily consumed by Mexican and Latin immigrants who prefer it over the American version. As well, American soda pop purists find Mexican Coca Cola to be truer to the Atlanta based concoction of old , as its still sold in glass bottles and made with real, cane sugar. Most Amercian versions of Coke is sold in plastic bottles or aluminium cans and made with high fructose corn syrup.

Delgadillo and Lockyer sued Coca-Cola Monday, seeking to stop distribution of the Mexican product in California over concerns about the product's alleged lead content. Elevated levels of lead have been detected in the paint used to decorate the outside of the glass bottles, as well as in the drink itself, the lawsuit alleges.

"Millions of bottles of this product have been handled and consumed by Californians over the past four years without any warning of the danger they pose,'' the lawsuit states.

We don't need Delgadillo or Lockyer to tell us what kind of soda to drink, what video games to let our kids play or any other of the ridiculous, nutty, high profile bullshit causes these politicians take on.

How about going after the gangs - many of whom are illegal aliens - who prey on poor people - primarily otherwise law abiding illegal aliens? How about fighting crime so LA stops its downward slope into becoming a third world city?

But that would be too hard, wouldn't it?

Mayor Sam, you ignorant slut. How many people KNOW there is lead in those bottles?????? Does it say "Coke, it's the real lead thing" on it somewhere? Using the old "if they're fighting this, they can't be fighting that" argument is lamer than lame. Preventing people, especially children, from a product that will almost ensure brain damage and/or organ malfunction is worthy - as is fighting gangs, filling potholes, and stopping identity theft. I didn't realize we had to pick one crime from Column A, and leave the crimes from Column B, in order to have legal justice. This is one of the stupidest, most moronic things I've read anywhere, anytime. By the way, I am NOT a Rocky supporter, I think he's a loser. You've proven yourself his equal with this bizarre rant.

Uhhh, Mayor Sam, not to be a party pooper but lead in the Coke = big public health crisis. I think that I'd buy your "don't buy it if you don't want lead" argument if the bottle had a huge sign on it that said, "Made with Lead, which will definitely make you retarded."

Rocky may be milking this one politically, but honestly this sounds like a pretty straight forward public health issue to me.

Using your logic, there shouldn't be any more health inspectors going around to restaurants in L.A. either. I'll buy you lunch at the first un-graded restaurant in town you suggest.

Thank you Mayor Sam for stating the obvious. Rocky should be going after those gang members who are illegal. Rocky is desperately looking for anything he can get into the lime light for. Gangs would be a good start.

Lame. American Coke is crap and bottled in cheap plastic. I'd rather drink motor oil mixed with corn syrup. Mexican Coke however is the same as all Latin American and European Coke - the real real thing, not that dreck being pushed on you by the Corn Syrup manufacturer's lobby! John Ek, call your office!

You can probably thank the queen of corporate welfare, Bob Dole, for all the high fructose corn syrup that is being used. He got big bucks from Archer-Daniels-Midland (the ones that always advertise on the Sunday talk shows) to work those deals when he was in the Senate and Majority Leader.

Big federal subsidies for corn farmers in the midwest make it cheaper than sugar. They grow so damn much corn, more than any of us want to eat, they have to force the government to force others to use the crop for other things that make no sense. (Like Ethanol, which is not practical as an alternative to gas).

Another issue with high fructose corn syrup is it does not metabolize as well as sugar, which is why a lot of folks are gaining weight even though they are not eating more in volume. (Yes some are, but others are not).

Anyway - leave it to the consumer groups to point out that there is lead in the bottle - assuming there really is. Its not Rocky's job.

Isn't this the third time that Lockyer has played patty-cakes with Rocktard on some vacuous press strategy?

Rocktard and Locktard are engaging in a futile attack on California's most venerable institutions -- taquerias and taco trucks. You can brandish the law, but you can never stop all those botellas of fortified Mexican Coke (yearning to be free) from seeking better fortunes in the esophagi of los Estados Unidos.

What's next -- an INS raid on the Jarritos factory? A gang injunction against picked jalapenos and carrots? A wall to keep Mexican manteca out of the country?

I am willing to concede that lead in any product is a bad thing. But lead fired at the bodies of the citizenry is a bigger threat, and this video games and cokes strategy favored by Rocktard Fake-Ass Vendido represents his constant failure to make eye contact with reality. I don't see how he can claim to represent la raza when he'd obviously ban menudo for the sake of a headline.

Mmm. Now I'm all worked up for some carnitas.

When was the last time you heard someone dying of lead poisoning? Being FAT is a much bigger epidemic in this country and hundreds of thousands of folks are dying EVERY year as a result of illnesses connected with OBESITY such as heart disease and diabetes, just to name a few.

How many of our parents who were born and RAISED in third world countries and ate and drank all the "crap" that the FDA says is "bad" and are just fine?

What about smog, smoking, guns, gangs, car accidents, and drugs? I want an AG who is going to protect me and my family from these things. Not a glass bottle of my favorite soft drink that I as an adult, CHOOSE to drink. This is America, not North Korea.

Mayor Sam is right, the high fructose corn syrup is bad for you compared to the natural sugar in the Mexican soda. Why doesn't Rocky go after THAT?zd

10:31 - So if a substance causes grievous bodily harm, it's OK as long as it doesn't kill you? Even incredibly small amounts of lead ingested just once can cause severe brain damage, especially in children under 12. So Grandpa Jose puts that Coke bottle down for 2 seconds and little Juanita takes a swig - there you go. Seriously. That's all it takes. If you had kids maybe you'd care more about this, we're talking about a completely avoidable cause of severe retardation, impediment of motor skills, loss of the ability to read or comprehend language.

That's why "get the lead out" campaigns in the past have been so aggressive. It's an unbelievable damaging substance that can render you - child or not - below functioning level. Since we ALL pay for the care of the disabled one way or another, maybe you could at least see the value of this action from a monetary point of view, if not a humane one. For the person who said it's up to the consumer groups to take care of this - what have you been drinking? Leaded Coke? It's against the law to have lead in food/beverage containers. So legal authorities take the action - not "Consumer Reports"

Haven't you got enough REAL stuff to rag on Rocky about? Maybe lead bottles aren't the number 1 problem out there, but it's real one. Go complain about something he's done that's actually stupid. There's plenty to choose from.

When did the lead become known? How many bottles would it take to do harm? Do you have to lick the outside of the bottle to get the stuff in your system?

Let's get some facts here.

If you rank order food and drink threats to kids, what would the list look like? At least, the first five...

The bottles that contain lead are no longer made by Coke. The bottles containing lead were being refilled by third parties here in the states. The remedies being sought by the lawsuit - ie don't sell anymore Coke out of bottles containing lead here in the US - have already been adopted by Coke.
