Protest Day Tidbits**

As items develop, we'll post them here, feel free to do the same.

Media reports circulated that Downtown courts were closed. The courts report this is not the case. Anyone with business before any courts should show up as scheduled.

The Seventh Street Produce market however has seen a number of stalls close. No salad in West LA tonight.

Mayor Villaraigosa and Chief Bratton are about to hop a chopper to review the crowds from the air.

71,000 or about 27% of the LAUSD students did not show up to class today.

Dear Gabachos(white patriots)

i am so happy to see you are thinking of immigrants today.
Manana is a new day and we may decide to exercise our buying power as consumers and labor power as workers more often to rid you of your "situation ethics".

If you need your bed made; your meal prepared; your car washed;
your child breast fed; your spouse stimulated; or your mama
cleaned up at the nursing home, do it yourself.

Today we are not your employee.

But we love you in our own special way. See you soon.

^Hey Dummy.

Don't you realize that this "boycott" will actually make these people HAPPIER because the cost of every thing will be offset that there will be LEGAL workers to fill these jobs, bringing down Unemployment and generating $$$$$ in the economy instead of to Mexico.

IF you really wanted to do damage boycott for a week or MONTH, like the Civil Rights in the 50's if you want to compare yourselfs with the blacks. Then you'd get those businesses will worry or fess up and hire legal workers.

Plus this an Election Year so again this will rile up the white and republican voters up Just like ABORTION and GAY MARRIAGE in '04.

Just watch the Republicans will still be in control in '06 and '08. Because illegals not immigrants, a big difference don't want to go through the process of being legal citizens

If you need economic opportunity;
If you need clean water;
If you need guaranteed free public education;
If you need paved roads;
If you need healthy, quality foods;
If you need quality free/low-cost healthcare and emergency care;
If you need a potpurri of social services;
If you need the blond women you so crave;
If you need reasonable access to quality higher education;
If you need freedom of speech and freedom to protest with arrest;
If you need access to virtually any product or service available on Earth;

WE are NOT your country.

Now who needs and wants whom most??

Yes, please boycott - permanently.

Your ego is enormous that you think we actually NEED you people here - and yes, I mean YOU PEOPLE YOU MEXICANS. When you say immigrants it's clear you only mean your own kind. Based on you calling the readers here by a Mexican name, and hearing the illegal marcheres screaming that Se Pueda chant - or whatever the hell that stupid phrase is - you obviously don't include groups from say, the Phillipines or China in your "demands" for better treatment. Just the Mexicans. Just the greedy selfish Mexicans.

As a Latino I too am embarrassed as many of my friends born and raised in LA. There is already a backlash. All the reps are going on MSNBC, FOX, CNN saying this was the wrong message to send. The illegals just gave the representatives the best reason to implement harsh penalities. Its already started with ICE going after employers, medicaid being overhauled as of June and no more services to illegals. Stop giving them FREE services, healthcare, education, welfare food stamps etc. and let's see what they think they can do about it. Why didn't they protest in their own damn country. This is insulting to LA.

Common sense from Rep. Tom Tancredo:

“The activist protestors are trying to confuse the American public by lumping legal immigrants with illegal aliens. A day without legal immigrants would be a day without almost all Americans. A day without illegal aliens, on the other hand, would be a boon to the American taxpayer,” said Tancredo.

The net cost to the federal government in 2002 for public services provided to illegal aliens was $10.4 billion or $2,736 per household according to a report by the Center for Immigration Studies. Estimates for 2005 put the amount at $11.7 billion or $3,080 per household.

Secondly, it seems that this protest is about respect. respecting the immigrants ( legal and illegal) who came here for a better life, who work hard, and just want to be respected for that work. I dont think thats asking too much. That doesnt mean that illegal immigration is OK. Any country has to have some type of control over their borders. I just say;dont blame the immigrants for wanting a better life.
The target of protests really should be the Mexican government. The Govt has been so corrupt and ineffective for..ever. Thats why mexicans are streaming over the border. Why doesnt everyone, ( mexican immigrants, the US Govt) put pressure on Mexico to get their act together?

"The meat packers are confirming what we know," says University of Maryland economics professor Peter Morici, "and that is that this large group of illegal aliens in the United States is lowering the wage rate of semiskilled workers, people who are high school dropouts or high school graduates with minimal training."

In fact, a meat-packing job paid $19 an hour in 1980, but today that same job pays closer to $9 an hour, according to the Labor Department. That's entirely consistent with what we've been reporting -- that illegal aliens depress wages for U.S. workers by as much as $200 billion a year in addition to placing a tremendous burden on hospitals, schools and other social services.

We exposed the true leanings of Villaraigosa, Alarcon and Nunez, to name a few.

The silent majority again showed that it had the class, judgment and dignity to uphold all the laws and put up with these illegals waving Mexican flags.

So, for those silent majority folks, I publish our manifesto:

Any business that was closed on May 1, 2006, we will not shop at anymore. Those businesses clearly hire too many illegals.

Any media outlet that called this a Protest of/for Immigrants cannot be trusted. This was a protest of/for Illegal Immigrants.

Any politician that supported this protest will not get our votes. Jeff Dahmer has a better chance.

Why is it that when I visit Paris or El Salvador, I am considered an American pig if I don't try to respect the culture and speak the language?

Democracy is a bitch, isn't it?

Immigrants are here, legally or illegally, working, raising their children, supporting their families, coming from dozens of different countries around the world. Today was a chance for them to come together and show that they are not invisible - they are human and deserve to be recognized as such. If nothing else, today's march/boycott and the March 25th event have raised the issue to a higher priority nationwide. And because everyone is self-identifying today, I'm Mexican-American, fourth generation in CA. And I agree with 2:55pm, there has been too much of a focus on the Latino angle - looking at news coverage of the marches nationwide, immigrants from Asia, Africa and Ireland participated in great numbers elsewhere. So everyone needs to chill the fuck out and have a discussion about what to do, rather than emotionally ranting. Interesting how paranoid and racist your responses are - scared by the sheer numbers? I find it fascinating that this blog's anonymity allows the REAL feelings of educated white folks - with all their ugliness and rage - to come out.

Rather than just speak out of emotion, consider the following:

WASHINGTON (Oct. 12, 2000) — The report on America's illegal immigration crisis by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), released today on Capitol Hill, highlights the profound unintended consequences of illegal-alien amnesties, just as Congress is considering another such amnesty. The report also makes clear, contrary to the conventional wisdom, that legal and illegal immigration are so intimately connected as to be two sides of the same coin. (Download the report at http://wwwa.house.gov/lamarsmith/INSreport.pdf.)

The report represents a genuine effort by the INS to examine this complex problem. The new estimates are the best to date and provide valuable new information for policymakers and the public. Among the findings, and their implications:

Amnesties clearly do not solve the problem of illegal immigration. About 2.7 million people received lawful permanent residence ("green cards") in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a result of the amnesties contained in the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986. But these new INS figures show that by the beginning of 1997 those former illegal aliens had been entirely replaced by new illegal aliens, and that the unauthorized population again stood at more than 5 million, just as before the amnesty.

In fact, the new INS estimates show that the 1986 amnesty almost certainly increased illegal immigration, as the relatives of newly legalized illegals came to the United States to join their family members. The flow of illegals grew dramatically during the years of the amnesty to more than 800,000 a year, before dropping back down to around 500,000 a year.

While it might be supposed that the increase in illegal immigration was caused only by the Special Agricultural Worker (SAW) provisions of the 1986 amnesty, the INS report indicates that this was not the case. Figures in the report itself show that illegal immigration surged more dramatically from countries other than Mexico. Since the vast majority of those amnestied under SAW were from Mexico, the increase should have been mostly Mexican if the SAW provision had been responsible for the surge.

Overall, the estimates show that nearly 500,000 illegal aliens settled here each year in the mid-1990s. This total number of new illegal settlers is offset by about 145,000 illegals who returned home on their own each year, 40,000 deportations, 20,000 deaths, and around 150,000 illegals receiving green cards as part of the normal "legal" immigration process.

The report clearly demonstrates that legal and illegal immigration are intimately linked, and not separate phenomena, as is commonly supposed. Between 1987 and 1996, the report states that 1.3 million green cards were given out to illegal aliens as part of the normal "legal" immigration process (189,000 in 1996 alone) — separate from the 2.7 million illegals who received legal status under the 1986 IRCA amnesty.

The 1.3 million green cards given out to illegals between 1987 and 1996 dwarf immigration enforcement efforts. According to the new estimates, only 335,000 illegals were deported or required to leave the country by the INS during the same period.

"The fact that these new INS figures show that the last amnesty actually attracted more illegal immigration should give serious pause to those now advocating another amnesty," said Steven A. Camarota, Director of Research at the Center for Immigration Studies. "With the government estimating that nearly half a million illegal aliens settle permanently in the United States each year, the new estimates indicate that we have not yet regained control over our nation's borders."

These numbers suggest that Congress's focus on border enforcement as almost the sole means of controlling illegal immigration is inadequate. Illegal immigration can be controlled only with a strategy that combines border enforcement with efforts to turn off the magnets that attract illegal aliens in the first place — jobs and green cards. Thus, the missing elements of our illegal immigration policy are muscular enforcement of the prohibition on hiring illegal workers and deep, permanent cuts in legal immigration.

Sadly the real battle here has nothing to do with what is right or worong but much more to do with the Democrats' perception that giving citizenship to 11 million illegal immigrants will add exactly that many Democratic voters to the list of registered voters. Republicans both fear that this is true and are happy to exploit cheap labor from illegal immigrants. Meanwhile the availability of sub-minimum wage/under the table labor puts existing undereducated American citizen workers in competition for those jobs and makes them less employable and at lower wages.

There is no inherent right to be here and as BBC World News pointed out this evening, there is in Europe a backlash against immigrants who are increasingly seen as failing to integrate into society. In the past, coming to America meant learning English and becoming a part of the "melting pot." No longer. Now we are seen as a source of income, but the concept of melting pot has become replaced with a sense of pride in country of origin first over being American second.

Several years ago, I saw a fine speech by Casey Kasem (he of American Top 40) - himself an American immigrant - talking about his opposition to "hyphenated Americanism." His point was we should all strive to be American's first a once we decide to come here. That was true of the Irish and the Germans and the Poles and so many other immigrant waves of the start of the 20th century, but at least to this observer seems to be no more.

The debate today is more about the preservation of American society than ever. Though I thought my own visceral response to the protests today would be intellectually limited to the facts of the debate, I find that my heart is saying no to those who would come here and never really make America first, but rather just use us while thei allegiance to teir prior nationalities remain their priorities.

While driving north on Hunting Dr. earlier today I counted an exorbitant number of campaign signs along the center divider. Is this meant for the careful driver who may not see a sigh or two thereby missing the message. Everyone together now. ANTONIO IS RUNNING FOR MAYOR. I think we all get it now. Or perhaps this is just a cynical way of blowing some of the hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions cluttering up our neighborhood. I am personally embarrassed for the campaign, considering the truly fine people that work for the councilman. The local field office confirmed for me that they in no way are responsible for what I characterized as over kill and assured me that city services will not tolerate advertising of any sort on public property. I refuse to believe that the councilman or his campaign are not aware of this. If readers are concerned about this please phone the campaign office and assert your opinion. Rember to be respectful.

All this fuss over immigration, it's simple economics, dum-dums.

Let's see, in the 80's, meat packing companies in the mid-west were tired of paying their white low-skilled workers $19/hr, so they began to look for an exploitable workforce. Illegal immigration was at the time mainly a border state problem. The companies expanded their plants to new areas in the mid-west, away from union influence, and recruited illegal immigrants. Soon, the unionized plants began closing one by one, until we have the situation of today, were meatpacking is essentially an illegal immigrant workforce.

And so it has been for dozens of other industries: janitors, maids, cooks and a plethora of other classifications that although never glamorous, at least put food on the table. Now, janitors and others need two jobs to acomplish this, so the workforce was vacated by americans and left for illegal immigrants.

But you dum-dums ignore the root of the problem. It's the business owners that recruit the illegals. It is they whom ignore US immigration law. It is they who fund the US House and Senate, the legislative bodies who make immigration law. It is they who fund our presidents, including our current one, who is advocating for a new amnesty, just like Reagan did in the 80's.

Illegal immigrants are the variable here. We can easily deport all Mexicans, and build a thight security fence on our border, but I guarantee that the moment that happens, the companies will find another cheap source of labor to supplant them. And the situation will never change until you stupid voters wake up and support candidates who are not in bed with the corporations.

Americans really are pig-headed, that is why they will always be treated as such when they visit foreign countries, particularly France.

That's like saying bank robbery is simple economics.

It's still wrong.

And the illegals are still breaking the law. Doesn't matter if employers do to.

By the way, the MTA gave free metro service to anyone who went to these "marches". Like these illegals don't get enough free services already...

Americans have one right these illegals don't have. We can vote. Let your voice be heard! Tell all of your government representatives to stop catering to the illegals. I'm sick and tired of my taxes paying for free services for illegals. The rights of legal citizens should come first! Take away the right of any child born in the United States to non-citizens being an automatic American. Don't allow amnesty! No more free passes! A change in the Constitution is needed... now!

I am 100% American. Additionally, I am of spanish descent. Puerto Rican to be exact and proud of it. My parents and grandparents were born in America. My great grand-parents however were immigrants. They came to this country the correct way. They applied for visas, worked hard, and after several years, they became naturalized citizens. Being true patriots who love this country, several of my family members have served in the Armed Forces, protecting the rights of citizens. IN AMERICA, there is a little thing called freedom of speech. If you cannot handle what people are writing, then stop reading. If you cannot handle the fact that there are Americans who don't agree that illegals should get anmesty, then stop reading. If you cannot handle the backlash you've created, then get out!

Yes, America was built on the backs of immigrants. But times have changed. There are rules and laws that dictate how many immigrants can come into the country. There are policies to follow and forms to be filled out. You want to be in this country to better yourself and your family, then obey the laws of America. Stop expecting things to be handed to you on a silver plate.

To 10:39 and all of your amigos:

FYI, this "White Patriot" will never and has never wasted a thought on illegals such as yourself. Stop insulting immigrants...you are AN ILLEGAL ALIEN. Immigrants are American Citizens who came here legally and not in the trunk of a Camaro.

I drove downtown today just to get a first hand look at the freak show you were putting on. I have never seen such a disgusting display of humanity in my life. Filthy dirty, rude, arrogant, DEMANDING, menacing, illiterate, itinerate ILLEGALS.

We are not fooled by the American flags....you showed your true colors on March 25. Nothing will ever change that unbelieveable display of third world culture.

You are a whorish slut and I wouldn't allow you to breathe the air I breathe.

You have no rights in this country and if you call shopping at flea markets and buying your food off of the burrito carts, be our guest.

We taxpayers are going to force you to self deport because we are going to stop supporting you. You and your anchor babies.

You and the rest of your illegal amigos did more to make every American despise you with your ludicrous tantrums. We vote our power....and you haven't seen anything yet!

Take your pals, Javier Rodriquez, Larry Lopez, Toilet Guy, Gil Cedillo, Bustamante, et al and go back where you came from, pronto!

3:38 - If you think this anti-Mexican illegals is about jobs, you are too stupid to hold a job anyway. This isn't about themj taking jobs Americans want - this is about them ruining the state's economy. They do it in several ways: They take whatever job they're offered at below market, below minimum wage salaries. That in turn suppresses wages across the board. It also means that Americans who want or can only get an entry-level or low-skill job must take those jobs at less than what the job paid a decade ago.

Next, they use of far more in city and state services than their taxes would pay for, even if they did pay taxes (and over 75% pay no taxes at all). Our health care system is nearly bankrupt, our trauma centers are closing in record numbers, and our schools are almost the worst in the nation.

But if you think illegals have the right to be here & deserve to have our free services, I wonder how many you'll let move into your house. Will you feed them? Buy diapers for their 4th, 5th and 6th child? Pay their medical bills? Will you pay the aprx $40/day for each of those kids to attend school? I didn't think so.

LA32 quit posting your crap here and attacking people. Your embarrassing your community.Take it up at meetings.

Only 1 mil protested out of 12 mil illegals. Pretty sad numbers. Why didn't one damn reporter ask an illegal if they have been in this country 10 years why haven't they applied for citizenship if they love America?

The illegals have hurt themselves bigtime. Yesterday Americans were so pissed at their arrogance and watching them on TV demanding rights they e-mailed and called their reps. National Guard at the border now, medicaid no more for illegals come June. ICE (INS) raids will continue on employers. Employers are firing people today because they didn't get permission and didn't show up to work. DUMB DUMB DUMB

One thing these illegals proved to LA, that they are a big problem that is causing our traffic. Even Steve Lopez today in his column states how great the traffic was. The fwys were flowing nicely over the city. A lot of restaurants that remained open state they made more money then any other time of the year. Interesting that many of the businesses in Latino communities stayed opened.

Here's a nice story for you.

There once was a sheep named AV
And he told the flock to "dream with me"

The city fell asleep.
And now will be fleeced.
Because the voters voted for a wolf who looked like a sheep.

Now the entire city is awake...and he is toast! Yesterday was his final nail in the coffin.
