Protest in Van Nuys

I went to check out the protests set for Van Nuys this evening. Of course, my trek started just before the protests were about to start, but I saw few people queing up. There may have been about 50 kids staging at the Panorama City office of Hermandad Mexicana and seven or eight in front of the Van Nuys Civic Center.

What I did see was hundreds of people, lots of them Latino and every other race. They were working. They were shopping. They were taking their children to the doctor. They were driving their cars and riding the bus. Some of them were just enjoying a walk. Perhaps some of them would join the protest as it rolled southward down the Boulevard, I don't know. It gave me that sense that most folks, regardless of race of color, are content to live their lives and don't need to give in to rabble rousing. This was true of the Minuteman and anti-immigrant protests too.

There was one thing I saw that made me furious. In advance of these protests, the City had posted no parking on the Boulevard for the rest of the evening. Like a swarm of vultures, tow trucks and big butted DOT employees descended on every poor, hapless vehicle parked one minute past 4:30 p.m. Cha-ching, cha-ching, the City must be saying.

The unfortuanate part of this is that probably nearly every one of these cars that were towed belonged to working class folks, immigrant and otherwise, who can barely afford the impound fees. Its one thing to get your car towed for breaking the legitimate rules, but this is an injustice. Most of these folks were probably working so hard, doing their daily routine, that they probably didn't even know about the protests and the street closing.

Mayor Villaraigosa waived parking tickets for the protestors last time. I challenge him to waive the impound fees for these hard working, Valley citizens who are trying to feed their families.

Rules are rules, Sam. You read the signs, whoever got towed, it's their own damn fault. Screw the Valley, there life is harder on the other side of the hill.

Why are immigration laws all of a sudden supposed to be different for non-caucasians? They can't even protest in English much less provide for themselves.

Why is anyone surprised, the racist illegal immigrant protestor's don't believe rules and especially laws apply to them. The citizens and legal residents are screwed again.

I'm sick and tired of people making excuses for these illegal immigrants. Learn to READ AND SPEAK ENGLISH. I'm tired of hearing "they are hard working people." They don't finish that line with "here illegally and making tax free money." There were more protests against the WAR and the gov't didn't care. I hope in two weeks they pass that damn bill and start the buses rolling back to the border to drop all these idiots off.

8:04 Take a bus back to KKK land (Orange County)! I bet you're one of those that claims that these immigrants are taking away jobs like washing dishes and taking care of your kids. LA doesn't need intolerant racist people like you.

8:26am I'm a Latino born and raised in LA and like many other educated Latinos we're sick and tired of the illegals with their arrogant attitude getting a free ride. They act as if it is owed to them. They're on welfare with all those kids getting free aid, getting a free education, over crowding our schools and hospitals yet if they love it so much here why didn't they APPLY TO BECOME A CITIZEN AND ABIDE BY THE LAWS? Say what you want THEY ARE BREAKING THE LAW and now want a free pass. If they love this country why don't they LEARN THE LANGUAGE?

8:39 I'm very proud of the people that have come to this country illegaly and have made themselves legal. They have learned the language. Yes not all speak English. But they are making the effort. Not all are taking a free ride. I do get upset when I see women with there 4 kids walking on the street. But I do not hate them for wanting to make a better life. I'd rather have my tax money go to people that are trying to make something of themselves than those that sit around and complain that there are no jobs here. I think that we as american citizens have taken this country for granted. There are so many opportunities out there and instead of seizing the day we sit around and complain about this or that. Be proud that you are latino and hopefully that you know Spanish as well. And hopefully you have never had to struggle as many have come here and struggle everyday.

People keep saying the illegals work hard for this country. Fact is they send their money back to Mexico and Vicente loves it. Stay in US and send me your money. What doesn't the INS raid the garment district downtown? Why aren't they going after the employers????? Why hasn't Antonio said anything about that??/ At least Hahn has the guts to say that in a couple of press conferences.

Some protestors were fired because they walked off their jobs to protest. Good for those bosses!

Who paid for the permits for the street to be closed and the DOT overtime? Rick Orlov you should look into that because a lot of Valley schools, groups, etc. that want to do parades and other events don't get this treatment.

Speaking of circumcition, the US spends billions of $ every year on Israel.

If they zionists can get free money, so can the illegals. Matter of fact, let's cut the zionist entity off and give it all to the thirld world countries that dump their downtroden on our land.
