Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Friday

Monday is the last day to turn in signatures to save the LA County Seal. For more information, please visit www.savetheseal.net.

Jennifer Solis has an article here on the blog about the homeless situation in Los Angeles and recent efforts announce by the City and County to address the matter. While this old, dead Republican Mayor doesn't agree, our friends over at Martini Republic think Jennifer's previous article (where she takes Cardinal Roger Mahony to task) is an example of "Catholic bashing." In the interest of dialogue, we link to their post here. Jennifer also has an article in the current issue of the Jewish Journal where she expands further on the immigration issue including perspective from her family experience.

Random thought: I mentioned the other day that KTLA reporter Gayle Anderson is annoying. She really is. If you ever watch the KTLA Morning News, you might agreee. She is loud, obnoxious, overbearing, and often, rude. She speaks over her interviewees and just isn't interesting.

Seth Godin blogs and wonders why you can't use those magnetic hotel key cards in the vending machines and other places in a hotel where you can charge purchases to your room. Well, its already here.

Save the Seal, huh? Do they expect that embarassing waste of taxpayer money to be certified?

Funny how conservative Republicans are thrilled to blow the state's / county's money if it furthers their ideology and political goals, but balk at the public schools, public transit, and public healthcare... what a joke.

The Republican Party has been coopted by the "Religious Right." Whatever happened to separation of Church and State?

With all the problems L.A. faces, local Republicans demonstrate their irrelevance by focusing their attention on the presence or absence of a tiny mark on a seal at which no one looks. Wouldn't it be better, for example, to focus on making neighborhoods safe enough for children to grow up without having to fear drive-by shootings?

And speaking of religion and children, Cardinal Mahoney's supposedly deep concern over the well-being of illegal aliens might be touching -- so to speak -- except he has no more credibility than the President of NAMBLA. If he really wants to help, he and his church should use the massive resources at their disposal to improve the flock's lot in Mexico.

He could start by telling them birth control is not a sin, it's a responsibility when you can't afford to support that third, fourth or ninth child. Instead, his conduct comes across more like a multi-level marketing scheme: have as many kids as possible, come to the U.S., where you can make more money, and kick in 10% to the company.

It hasn't been co-opted. There isn't some set of "True Republican Ideals" that are being compromised here, that "real conservatives" can restore. The GOP is about getting power however possible, pushing more risk onto the poor and middle class, and shoveling money uphill and overseas as fast as possible. No one with any real power in the GOP will cut the budget one dime, just take out loans to fund their crazy tax schemes. Don't like it? Jump ship, cos it's not getting any better.

The Religious Right has been co-opted by the GOP, not the other way around. "The ACLU is attacking Christianity!" Such a steaming pile. The supes just thought it was easier to change the logo than to defend a religious icon being on there, poor bastards never figured the GOP would roar into action over it.

My favorite though is the bonus, racist dodge from people who want to keep the cross on the seal but are unwilling to acknowledge the state's Latino heritage. A close second are the people who do admit the heritage angle, but dump on anyone waving a Mexican flag.

I used to think the Seal people wanted to divide Latino voters from the Dems, too bad their base won't stop talking shit long enough to convince anyone that they're not a bunch of white racist thugs. The only thing that "save the seal" can do now is get dittohead evangelical voters out to the polls.

Laborthug...no one gives a rats ass of your opinion...thats like whenever Higby posts the "newest" fundraising #'s in the 20th. Maybe one day per week Cindy will outraise Alex...and he posts it as if its the greatest news ever.

But since the 50/100 were all favorable to Alex from the getgo....sounds like Alex probably had the audience.

I agree. Laborthug represents the typical dissatisfied dissident haranguing over the same issue time after time. He should just run for office. Who know, I might just vote for him. But in the meantime, get a life, and perhaps a real job.

Walter,

The Catholics aren't the mormons. Tithing ain't required. Which is why many of the churches frequented by poor, undocumented immigrants are among the poorest in the diocese, supported by the wealthier, suburban parishes.

It's not a money making scheme for Mahony, its a pastoral scheme. His job is meet the needs of his flock and he'll oppose legislation that interferes in his ability and right to do so.

If he had been coming out against abortion or gay marriage so publicly, conservatives would quickly forgive the church for its abuse scandal and embrace his message, I am sure.

5:07 AM - We post the Alex/Cindy numbers whenever ElectionTrak sends it out. They don't do it every day. Right now, I'm focusing primarily on the 20th SD, 38th AD and the Attorney General's race because, well, they've got the biggest cast of characters.

I'm out.
I re-registered "decline to state" after the same party that concealed my campaign from its members then went on to pull out all the stops for Hahn -- after he paid them $35,000!

Plus, they no longer stand for limited government in any event. And I never liked the party's hostility towards gays and pro-choice. A long, long time ago, the party supposedly stood for low taxes, limited government, individual responsibility, and a strong defense. Now it's just a special interest club that's unwilling even to defend our borders.

So that giant tax-free cathedral was paid for with what? Four pesos? You aren't really suggesting the Catholic church is short on funds, are you?

"How do we build big cathedrals from small donations? VOLUME!"

P.S. Why can't Mahoney and his international organization take care of the flock BEFORE they come here illegally? They could, of course, but it's more lucrative to herd the flock into this pasture, so the owners, not the sheep, can be fleeced.

I don't know why I defend Mahony, but here I go.

The majority of the funds used to build the Cathedral came from VERY rich, VERY Catholic families that want a Cathedral built and wanted their names on it. Check out the donor wall sometime. Riordan, Ahmanson, Simon, Schwarzenegger. Some familiar names in Los Angeles. And in Republican politics.

Money WAS not taken out of parish budgets, or charitable services programs, and certainly not from Catholic Charities.

The Cathedral and its next door conference center is used by ALL of Los Angeles for tons of non-liturgical functions. Every major city has a Cathedral, especially every VERY Catholic city. Our was destroyed in the '94 earthquake and it was way too small. Why raise money to repair something that was insuffient 25 years ago?

As for the immigration issue, read Mahony's Ash Wednesday homily. He's not saying that we need to flood the country will illegal immigrants, he's saying that the church will continue to serve those who come to its doors. It will provide food, education and *the sacraments* to everyone who seeks them and he won't as for "papers" before doing it.

Mahony, say what you will about him, has always worked for social change, in the US, Latin America and throughout the world. He has supported efforts to lift people up in the third world, which would help curb illegal immigration.

Don't blame Mahony, blame the free traders and GIANT corporations who export decent paying American jobs south of the border at exploitative wages. Blame economic policies that are immoral, valuing the dollar over human survival. Blame the corrupt politicians, both north and south of the border, who don't really want to do anything about this problem but jawbone it to death trying to score political points with a voting public too stupid to see its being played.

While Democrats get charged with playing identity politics -- playing off of minorities' sense of loyalty to the Democratic Party -- it's the GOP that master it!

Gay Marriage, Abortion, Schiavo, and now Immigration. They pick these issues and make political hay out of them, but have no intent on actually doing anything about it. Where is the Federal Marriage Amendment? Where is even more stricter controls on abortion? Where is the criminalization of being here illegally and hiring an illegal? They'll never do it because if they did they'd have to find a new pet issue.

I don't know why you defend him, either.
Money is money. The idea that the millions that paid for the cathedral could only be used for that purpose is not credible. Mahoney could have urged donors to help build "affordable housing" in Mexico, rather than a Cathedral here.

Nor is it convincing to argue that we should not blame him, but should instead only blame others responsible for illegal immigration. Excuse me, but why do we have to chose one? Mahoney and the Republican Party and the Democratic Party and scores of others are all to blame for the broken borders. We don't have to pick only one and excuse the rest.

That cathedral cost $270 million. Can you imagine how that could have helped the homeless, helped the poor etc. I will never step a foot into that pedophile gate called a cathedral. Mahony protected many priests right here in LA who molested little boys. He's never ever acknowledged that. He's fighting the courts still, has a pr firm, has high priced lawyers all paid for by the poor people he says mass to. Give me a f--ng break, the cathedral has a damn ATM right inside.

Mahony shouldn't be defended; he should be ashamed of himself and resign. His conduct throughout the years/decades of the child molestation scandal is sickening as is his conduct in resisiting Cooley's and the public's efforts to get to the bottom of this. The grandiose Taj Mahony is further evidence of his character.

Corporations want cheap labor; Mahony wants butts in his pews and more money in collection plates. Illegals are his growth opportunity. It's that simple.
