Garamendi Has Heart Surgery

California Insurance Commissioner and Democratic candidate for Lt. Governor John Garamendi had surgery Monday to repair a leaking mitral valve in his heart.

Doctors say the surgery went well and Garademni, 61, should have a relatively short recovery time. At this time, we are aware of no announcements as to the future of his candidacy.

What hole in LA have you been living on? Garamendi was in the state legislature in the 70s, ran against Tom Bradley for governor in 82 and against Kathleen Brown in 94, then became the first insurance commissioner when the post was created in the early 90s. He then served in the Clinton administration and got elected Insurance Commissioner again in 2002. He is now running for Lt. Governor.

Considering the caliber of gubernatorial candidates running in this year's election, one of the saddest facts of Election 2006 is that John was not one of them.

An individual in their 60's with a heart condition doesn't necessarily preclude one from active engagement in the political arena. Unpleasant example: Dick Cheney.
