If It Looks Like A Duck, and Quacks Like a Duck …

Despite the fact that I graduated from the LAUSD, I have acquired a fair command of the English language. So when the Mayor of Los Angeles looks me in the face (via TV news) and tells me that the Senate committee’s version of immigration reform is not “amnesty,” then what is it?

The only difference between the 1986 Amnesty, which legalized millions of the undocumented, and the McCain-Kennedy proposal, is that the government wants to collect a $2,000 fee – which is equal to what the average coyotes are charging these days. Lots of luck getting these people to pay the money, unless, of course, Bush can hire the Mafia to collect it.

At today’s Cathedral Mass, Cardinal Mahoney stated, “I’ve been soooooo disappointed by the rhetoric” about the undocumented immigrants. His passion was touching. I only wished that he would show as much concern about the pedophile priests he has protected for decades, and continues to do by sitting on the files necessary to bring a conclusion to the legal aspects of this tragedy.

I can’t blame His Eminence for wanting to open wide the borders. The Catholic Church has only about a twenty percent market share among American Christians, and his support of making Los Angeles a “sanctuary” city with Special Order 40, etc. has increased the flock considerably.

Of course it's amnesty. Anyone with half a brain realizes the current tactic of using the word "comprehensive" to mean guest worker/amnesty. Secure the damn border.

Mahony...uggh. He should be run out of town in disgrace like Bernard Law.

Why the triple entries? Symptom of cerebral stuttering? Assumption of audience ADD? Or were you just unsure of whether you were getting your point across?
Whatever the case may be, I agree that the bill is a sham, particularly since it lacks effective sanctions against illegal aliens, complicitous employers and immunizes "religious and charitable " organizations from penalties.

Will importing poverty save General Motors? GM's fate is the UAW's handwriting on the wall. What we need is a permanent underclass in America. Right? Wake up America

Back off Jennifer, she's learning the Blogger software, but she writes better than any damn blogger in town. She's got to be one of the most interesting voices in LA right now and you get to read her right here on the Sister City.

Most interesting voices in L.A. - with this kind of post? Gee, why don't you just invite Lou Dobbs to post. Where does that Solis name come from Jennifer. Sound like an "immigrant" name to me. Or do you just have a little Mexican in you? Get it?

Jennifer is a Latina and I know her mother was an immigrant, not sure if Jennifer was born here or not.

Jennifer is no Lou Dobbs, but its refreshing to see a youngster who went to LAUSD and didn't get brain washed into being a total knee jerk liberal.

But if you read her other article, she's no right winger either. I find her opinions very intersting no doubt.

Good points, Jennifer.
But can we really deport 12 million people? The only historical example I can find on that number is mass deportations of Mexicans in the 1930s which often deported citizen and non-citizen alike. I don't think your (or frankly anyone except maybe some of the Minutemen) are advocating that. I mean even in Israel, which currently trying to replace Palestinian labor (i.e Palestinians who work in Israel) with labor from Thailand, and other countries due to security concerns isn't doing it within a year. They are gradually replacing those workers with 'guest' workers from countries which they don't find to be a threat. And that's over a period of years and very few Palestinians are undocumented. With the problem here, we have too many, depend on them too much, and would probably have a harder time gradually replacing them with other sources of labor even if we could. Would you consider the current GOP proposal, where some immigrants would have to go back to border checkpoints to apply for legal status amnesty? I personally think that McCain/Kennedy is on the right track. My preferred solution would be couple that with a way that Social Security and the BICE (formerly the INS) can cooperate so that when SS gets phony social security numbers, an employer say they have a month or so to report a valid number otherwise BICE will investigate. Secondly, if the investigation turns up someone that has not gone through the newly created guest worker program or someone who has not had their status regularized, I think their should be a huge fine for that employer. Specifically if the person is being paid under the amount of 'prevailing wage' they should be required to pay the immigrant the amount they would have gotten otherwise, and also pay half the amount in fines to the government along with stiff fines merely for what they did. Couple that with the increased enforcement provisions in the McCain/Kennedy proposal and I think it's at least a partial solution.

Gotta love all the talk radio guys slamming our mayor. One made a very important point to Jesse Diaz an organizer but he couldn't answer the question and got pissed off. He asked why is it a felony for anyone to cross into Mexico from other parts but if illegals cross into US we should pardon them. Jesse got furious and tried to change the subject and did everything to evade the question.

Come on everyone, the cardinal is a criminal-aiding and harboring those pedophile priests in the church. Anyone listening to him is ignorant. Of course he would want all the children whose parents can't speak english to be available to those sick bastards. And if he listened to Pope John Paul he would keep his hand out of politics. He is getting close to helping the church lose their non-profit status. Politics should not be from the pulpit.
