Open Thread for Friday

Today in 1801, after one tie vote in the Electoral College and 35 indecisive ballot votes in the House of Representatives, Vice President Thomas Jefferson is elected the third president of the United States over his running mate, Aaron Burr. The confusing election, which ended just 15 days before a new president was to be inaugurated, exposed major problems in the presidential electoral process set forth by the framers of the U.S. Constitution.

You may remember that Aaron Burr was the last sitting Vice President who actually shot someone (Alexander Hamilton, the guy on your $10 bill) until last weekend when Dick Cheney accidentally shot attorney Harry Whittington during a quail hunt in Texas.

Mayor Sam, Jefferson is on the $20 and Hamilton is on the $10. You also ought to give some props to Jon Stewart as he was the first to make the observation of the last sitting VP being a shooter.

Sam, don't overlook a blog on the developments in the Pellicano case.

Don't you think that the indictment of Terry Christensen, Kirk Kerkorian's longtime attorney and close advisor is big news? He is the head of a 120 person law firm that has lots of high profile clients.

I'm hearing this is just the tip of the iceberg. When they busted Pellicano, they got all of his tapes. He taped all the lawyers and clients he was working for, and that is now the evidence of their guilt that will bury them in conspiracy cases. Conspiracy to wiretap is serious federal felony stuff. Think ten (10) years, and, for lawyers, disbarment to boot. Lots of lawyers in LA losing sleep this weekend.

For an eyeful, check out www.thesmokinggun.com for a copy of the superceding indictment. Looks like Terry is firmly in the crosshairs despite the optimistic junk the lawyers are spouting. You can be sure that Mike Sitrick is writing their scripts.

The firm is scrambling for cover.

Did anyone read the LA Times today? Obviously Mayor Sam did and chose not to run the story about Ludlow's possible resignation and plea bargain.
Looks like he may be stepping down folks. All you labor fools better get ready for a "special meeting". Wow, and Janett Humphries, who is no longer President of Local 99 may go down too. Looks like Martins calculated political career may be over. If he takes the plea, he may be barred from holding office for ten years. Damn! If convicted, he's going to do some time. Looks like he's done either way.

Yup read the Antonio quote that "He's like a son to me and I love him. Guilt by association. Maybe Antonio doesn't want Ludlow to drop a dime on his corruption. And what's up with all these committees Antonio is putting together. When is he going to DO something as mayor?????? I can't remember the last thing he did and now we're going on how many months????

Anybody notice who Janett Humphries has got to represent her?

Why, it is no other than your own beloved Lauro Pacheco, CD 14's voted most popular. Now, there's a pair that deserve each other.

Nice to see that Nick has finally found some honest employment; any chance he'll counsel her to drop the dime (well, make that the quarter) on Martin?

Nah, Nick loves Martin like a son, right? Or, was that someone else who said that?

I hope Martin gets himself a real lawyer here; he's got himself a heap of trouble.

MONICA GARCIA'S POSITION ON MAYORAL TAKE OVER

From Today's LA Times: "Garcia declined to take a position on the mayor's effort to take over the school district — a goal he wants to accomplish by early 2008 with voter and legislative approval — but said the board needed to work with him."

AND I THOUGHT JOSE HAD NO BACKBONE..........Based on Monica's lack of spine, I just cast my absentee ballot for Chris Arellano.

Actually, in a previous LA Times article, is said Janett Humphries was being represented by Ricardo Torres.

So, it seems the marriage between Nick and Ricardo is back on. I couldn't think of two more loathsome guys. They deserve each other. And, if Nick is working with or for Ricardo, it's not honest work.

Well, I guess Martin will turn to the black community for help in pleading his case. FYI, Martin has not been a real supporter of our community other than marrying Bishop Blake's daughter (and that was for political purposes too).
Who saw this coming? (raise your hand)
Martin vs. Deron
- Martin wins
*Deron hired by Wesson

Martin is out, Wesson is in.
*Wesson hires Deron

Wesson runs for Supervisor
- if Wesson wins, Deron runs for CD 10 and wins.

**Deron ends up the winner**
Martin loses and cannot hold office for ten years. Wow.

FROM CALIFORNIA BAR ASSOCIATION WEB SITE:

NICK PACHECO: Administrative Actions 9/1/2001 Suspended, failed to pay Bar membr. fees

Richardo A. Torres II: RICARDO ANTHONY TORRES II [164848], 37, of Alhambra was suspended for one year, stayed, placed on three years of probation with an actual 30-day suspension and until he proves his rehabilitation, and was ordered to take the MPRE within one year. The order took effect Jan. 16, 2002. Torres stipulated in two matters that he misused his client trust account by depositing attorney fees in it and by writing checks against it for personal expenses. He also did not cooperate with the bar's investigation of his actions. In a third matter, he wrote checks against insufficient funds in his trust account, committing acts of moral turpitude. In mitigation, he has no record of prior discipline, no clients were harmed and he cooperated with the bar's investigation.

Amen. He spends all his time trying to get more publicity. You can bet the campaign "for the children" will include an endless series of TV ads showing the mayor expressing his deep concern "for the children."

But look at the bright side: maybe the less time he spends actually "doing something," the less harm he inflicts on our city.

Anyone who has been following the School Board race knows that Monica has completely flip-flopped on the issue of AV's takeover proposal.

First she was against it... now she's ??? (what is her position exactly?)

wow. that was fast. most politicians don't flip flop until they actually flip flop. It took her less than 2 months.

FLIP FLOP MONICA

Even if Monica told people she was against the takeover for a while, no one believed her anyway. i hope that one of the other campaigns lets the public know she is not to be trusted

It's good to have you back. You bring some sorely needed perspective.

Who is your pick to win the school board race? And, why would any body take this thankless job?

Huizar - school board

Huizar - city council

AV - city council

AV - mayor

AV - (next?)

That's why someone takes the "thankless" job!

Someone's going to have to fill Gloria Molina's "profile" soon; who better than Monica G.

That's a cheap shot. Just because Monica is obese doesn't mean she can fill Gloria's size 18 dress.
