Report: LAUSD donated "hundreds of thousands" to Catholic charities

Leslie Dutton dropped an eyepopping bullet into her promotional material for her video interview with Controller Laura Chick and others:
The Controller expressed concerns about the separation of Church and State with regard to reports received by the former Belmont prosecutor Anthony Patchett indicating that LAUSD had been donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to various Catholic church charities. She indicated an audit would reveal if there was a public benefit for such an expenditure adding there should be disclosure of what the Catholic church was doing for the LAUSD.

[Word to the wise: "Former Belmont prosecutor Anthony Patchett" has appeared on at least one Full Disclosure Network videoblog himself, in rebuttal to yet another video.]

I called Chick's office on this; I called the Cathedral (where I'm a card-carrying parishoner); I spoke to a City Commish; I exchanged email with Leslie. No luck pinpointing the claim.

Still, it's a tantalizing claim, almost a sensational one; and all this dum-dum knows after a dozen calls and emails is still exactly what he read on Leslie's press release. So blog away, you Kings of California, you Princes of Los Angeles.

THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THIS UP. THE AUDIT MIGHT WANT TO FOCUS ON 2005, SPECIALLY FUNDS TO CATHOLIC CHURCHES IN BOYLE HEIGHTS, YOU WILL FIND ALL CHURCHES HAVE BEEN NEWLY PAINTED, AND BEAUTIFUL DESIGN GATES HAVE BEEN INSTALLED.

THESE CHURCHES ARE IN LOW INCOME DISTRICT, SO HOW DID THEY GET MONEY TO DO ALL THIS COSMETIC REPAIRS, WHEN THE CHURCH IS CLOSING CHURCHES AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

SOME OF THE INDICATIONS, THAT SOMETHING WAS ROTTEN IN BH, WAS THAT THE CATHOLIC CHURCHES IN BOYLE HEIGHTS WOULD ONLY ALLOW HUIZAR TO PARTICIPATE IN THEIR EVENTS, WHEN LARGE CROWDS WERE EXPECTED.

MR. A PATCHETT, THE CATHOLIC CHURCH GAVE JOSE HUIZAR, RED CARPET TREATMENT TO CAMPAIGN 2005 FOR CITY COUNCIL AT THE CHURCH MASSES AND EVENTS. AND CATHOLIC CHURCH DID NOT PERMIT ANY OTHER CANDIDATE, EVEN CATHOLICS CANDIDATES TO PARTICIPATE, ONLY HUIZAR WAS EXTENDED THAT.

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH HAS ON FILE COMPLAINTS OF ENDORSING ONE CANDIDATE AND NOT OTHERS.

But who specifically was this money given to---if it was indeed given at all---and what was it given in the hopes of achieving? Lips are sealed all around. In fact, the veracity of the claim has been questioned by some of the folks to whom I've spoken.

Mailander: I agree. one does get tired of these paranoid, overblown accusations about corruption at the LAUSD. yes, there are problems. yes, let's fix them. but these kinds of sweeping and unsubstantiated claims don't do anyone any good...

This is a big one! It stinks like the people in City Hall.

One think for sure that we all know is that Catholic Charities are opening all the illegal day labour sites at Home Depot and elsewhere.

This is a can of worms just waiting to be opened.

I have a niece who is an investigative reporter for Dateline and I know she will love to sink her teeth into this one!

Watch out, Tony Villar...we're coming after you!

Hey Mainliner, you did not try very hard or look very far to find out the integrity of the report on the LAUSD giving hundreds of thousands to Catholic Charities. I just watched Leslie Dutton's FULL DISCLOSURE Video Blog entitled "Battle for $Billions" with Cardinal Roger Mahony who VERIFED he receives lots of support from the LAUSD.
Just go to the www.fulldisclosure.net and listen to Mahony for your self and why not share the link with your readers here, so they get FULL DISCLOSURE from you.
It is listed as Video Blog#18 just click on the Video Blog link in the top right hand corner of the home page.

Oh and yes, care to identify your LAUSD annonymous sources that cast doubt on the report?

Didn't the church in Pasadena get into trouble with the IRS for the political speeches made by the priest during mass?

Laura Chick should do an audit of Homeboy Industries and all non profits. Homeboy just bought a $10 million building in Chinatown.

As a voter, and also a Catholic...
I was somewhat appauled when our pastor allowed Huizar to speak to the congregation right after the final blessing.

Then, in the final weeks of the election- AV and Jose were 'honorary dignitaries'-doing the offering at the Mass.

Boyle Heights was never Huizar's territory-they were solid, Pacheco...then again- AV played a HUGE role!

Thanks, Leslie. But I wanted to hear it from somewhere other than the video.

You want to see squandered money, just look at Resurrection Church. Msgr Moretta, Mahoney's classmate at seminary school, is the pastor here. He is the one that married Gloria Molina - while she was three months pregnant, yet he won't conduct or allow funerals for victims of gang violence - leave it to the church to exemplify the epitomy of hypocrisy. This church has benefitted greatly from Moretta's political contacts. Frank Villalobos from Barrio Planners always finds ways to shift some money from his government contracts over to Moretta - both are ardent pro-lifers, funny given their relationship to Tony the Liar and Molina.

You want evidence of misappropriated funds, look no further than the massive fountain this church has displayed in the parking lot. There is an exact duplicate of this fountain at the city and county funded Paseo Walk, just south of Cesar Chavez Avenue at Soto Street - one of Barrio Planners many government contracts. The original plan for this walk called for two fountains, one at either end. But only one got placed, the other one ended up at Resurrection's Church footsteps. It's still there, maybe the mayors can get a picture?

IN THE INTEREST OF FULL DISCLOSURE WHY NOT PROVIDE YOUR READERS HERE THOSE UNNAMED SOURCES OF YOURS.

AND, WHY NOT TELL THEM THAT CARDINAL MAHONY CONFIRMED IT ON THE VIDEOTAPE?

AND WHY NOT LINK TO THE VIDEO SO YOUR READERS COULD JUDGE FOR THEMSELVES?

YOUR BLOG BIO SAYS YOU ARE A SELF PUBLISHER OF BOOKS, AND THAT YOU SPECIALIZE IN WRITING FICTION. SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT.

If LAUSD wants to give the religious entities money, why not pay the tuition for children that their own Public School have a failing grade and some parents are paying Private School, specially in areas like Boyle Heights.

FYI, there's a link to the video at the page to which I linked.

It's true that I write lots of fiction, but that stuff is always framed in the usual fictive framings. In this matter, it's precisely my anxiety not to spread fiction around that leads me to be cautious here. I see the charge made in the video, and certainly a conversation about the matter has taken place; yet I'm unable to confirm it with any party: Chick's office, the Archdiocese, and the District. Maybe someone else can confirm, or has more info; I'm inviting people to say what they know.
