IN all the stories they failed to say that Kroll Inc. is being paid $11 million until the contract ends 2006 to monitor LAPD. Gee, I wonder why they want the consent decree to be extended???

When you have nothing but Latinos living in an area and then you go to the South and have nothing but black youths who does this monitor think officers will more likely tend to stop a white jewish lady? All they want is more of our taxpayer dollars. I say they have an alterior motive for an extension.

I hope city council members have the guts to not confirm Ramona Ripston. Could it possibly be cases aren't filed because there is public confidence in our officers and we think they are doing what they think at a split second moment?

"when you don't file any cases it doesn't promote confidence in the justice system," said Ramona Ripston, executive director of the ACLU of Southern California.

The logistical problem with cameras (in addition to the expense of outfitting and maintaining units in each vehicle, and the violation of privacy--even public servants have not agreed to 24 hour surveillance), is that the hundreds of thousands of hours of tape/data would have to be logged, processed and assessed for relevancy.

Violation of privacy isn't an issue. Most surrounding police depts. have the cameras in their patrol cars. This will never happen as long as we have a lame city council. LAPD can't even get $100,000 to get digital tape recorders to use during witness interviews. The city says it doesn't have the money. yet, they spend and waste so much money on stupid studies like the Elephant study at LA Zoo.

The problem with the LAPD if the Rolling Stone Article is true is not racial prejudice but corruption.

The article piggy-backs on the Biggie Smalls lawsuit against the LAPD alleging that David Mack and others in the LAPD were part of an organized crime ring out of Death Row Records / Suge Knight (also involving the LAT) that had Biggie Smalls killed over royalties.

The "message" being sent is "drive and wave" with respect to minority suspects who form most of the criminals LAPD will encounter. This message has already been sent with the Devin Brown case.

Remember the Rodney King riots? When LAPD got the message loud and clear not to use force against criminals? No officer is going to pursue minority suspects unless it's so clear cut and outrageous he's forced to. Meanwhile, the real issues of organized crime finding a foothold in the LAPD is ignored. I doubt seriously that Rampart consisted of Perez and a few bad apples. With serious under-policing already LA is in bad shape.

I would like to thank Jim Hahn for the consent decree. With this brilliant idea, we can safely say that he was a complete failure as a public servant.

The whole Rampart corruption scandal was the fault of Bitter Bernie. He knew Raphael Perez and David Mack and his daughter even hung out with them. Bitter Bernie could have stopped the corruption but he himself had his own baggage promoting all the thugs in the dept. I think LAPD has come a long way and you're right poster I hope police officers just stay in their cars. Why the hell should they put their careers and life on the line for a bunch of idiots who are threatening to burn the city while killings are going on every day in their own backyards.

Excellent post, former mayor Hahn. Your "Blame Bernie" philosophy has really served you well.

Hey 9:40 and 3:04

Since you are obviously the same person, why don't you state your name?

Many of us who reside in Los Angeles are so sick and tired of these crap articles written about LAPD that we want to scream.

Look, the LAPD is no different than any organization or business. They have their great cops and the few that shouldn't be cops. They test more substantially and significantly than any other organization or business known to mankind.

LAPD has a near year academy/bootcamp program that many cannot make it through, even though they have been strongly pre screened.

These fine men and women not only care about our community and verbalize their care and concern, they take it to the next level and actually risk their lives, work their butts off, receive far too low a salary and then listen to the lack of support for them by the big mouths in our community.

Do they make mistakes, sure. Do they mostly do the right thing....YES.....and they do them very very well.

You try being put in life threatening situations and being given seconds to make the right decisions. You try being targets of the crooks, gang bangers and infidels of our society. You try if for a week or a month and not a career or a life time and then you tell me whether or not they deserve the criticism or both our respect and our deep appreciation.

So, the men and women of our department are the best and they deserve to be treated that way. The only thing that distinguishes us from the wild west is our law and order(whatever we can do in that regard) and the only thing that protects us from car jackers, robbers, other thieves and insurrection are our public safety officer, particularly LAPD !!!

So, forget about Caucasions, forget about African Americans, forget about Latinos and forget about all other ethnicities and realize we are all, every one of us, residents of Los Angeles and we only enjoy what we do here because of our LAPD and other public safety officials.

So when you see them on the street...smile, say thank you and move on in deep appreciation of the freedom they provide to every single one of us !!

Oh, and hey Mayor Sam, it might be nice if you would once a week write a good story or a nice background of some LAPD officer or other public safety officer. This would be a great way of honoring the men and women of our LAPD.

Thanks for considering this and not being like our LA Times or other similar yellow journalists.

No party invitations. I'm just tired of anonymous posters who post bullshit.

It's especially tiring reading the Hahn bashing. It's old news.

Move on. Maybe you need a party to go to.

Hey 4:57, What do you mean bullshit? Wasn't it Jim Hahn who negotiated the consent decree? I'm simply stating fact. Also, you should be prepared to hear a lot more Hahn-bashing over the next few years because the results of his 10 to 4 work schedule for four years will be unveiled during this administration. And, it won't be pretty. The grand jury investigations, the pay-for-play and the other stuff we knew about is just the tip of the ice berg.

You should be prepared for Villaraigosa's big fall and he will come crashing down soon.

He'll make Hahn look like a ball buster.
