Budget Priorities vs LAUSD

Robert Greene from the LA Weekly tackles the LAUSD conundrum this week: School Takedown -- Antonio’s case for control of L.A. Unified merits a C+, but he’s a fast learner . A key section...

The mayor, too, has his hands full with the city. Do we have those 1,000 more cops yet? I don’t think so. Is our budget problem solved? Nope. Housing issues addressed? Not even close. Traffic resolved? Please.

Look at the mayor’s own budget priorities for 2006 on his Web site. First item: “Improving public safety.” Second item: “Improving our public safety.” Just to clarify whose public safety we were talking about in item one, I guess. Third item: “Reducing gang violence.” In the name, one would suppose, of public safety.

Items three, four and five branch out a bit: reducing traffic congestion, protecting air and water quality, and making Los Angeles the world’s leading economic and cultural center.

I wonder if he will be sharing this in his State of the Valley speech today....

Our student's will not improve academically if we hire teachers who have no clue of local culture!

READ LA DAILY NEWS:

"In the Los Angeles Unified School District, officials said they have been working hard to recruit new teachers and to reduce the number working with only temporary or emergency credentials.

"We never stop recruiting. We are already two months into recruiting for next year," said Deborah Ignagni, the LAUSD's director of certificated recruitment.

Most of the recruiting is done within California, with some nationwide and in Canada, she said. In the past, the district has also recruited in the Philippines, Spain and Mexico, and it might do so again this year."

This was really down played in the news yesterday. Students said it was 200 not 60 like media is saying. Students beat up LAUSD officers and they had to be taken to hospital. Not one word in LA Times today.
AP...Police Respond To Fight At High School Students Treated For Pepper Spray Exposure
....Ten students were taken to a hospital to be treated for the effects of pepper spray used by school police to break up a fight at a Los Angeles area high school today, authorities said.

School police were called to break up a melee at Santee School...Cox said the disturbance began during the lunch period when two girls fought. The fight escalated and more students were involved...Initial reports indicated that more than 300 students were involved, but revised figures put the number at about 60 teens, Cox said.

These schools must be broken down into smaller campuses or sections. The students are assimiliating incarceration behavior due to lack of attention from teachers and administration. What the FFFF are you going to do?

5 months in office and all of the City's problems aren't fixed yet. What the hell is going on?

Apparently Robert Greene knows all the quick fixes that the administration has yet to undertake.

I don't expect all the city's problem to be fixed in 5 months - or 5 years. But we should see something other than mere words or publicity opportunities. Saying LAUSD should be under mayoral control is not good enough. I think Robert Greene is right to bring up this issue. But better still, let a debate begin between those who agree with the mayor and those who don't.

I agree with an open debate, but keep in mind that the debate wouldn't have even begun had the mayor not said anything.

The mayor only said it because Hertzberg cornered him into it.

School fights the Jose Huizaraigosa legacy !

The only thing Villabaoso knows about education is getting girls pregnant. That's why his wife won't live with him, our Cholo at the Getty House and Corrine at Mt. Washington residence. Has anyone ever seen her at event with him ? She despises his stupid player ass? Does anyone know the lady that Tony the cholo knocked up in the 70's from Sacred Heart High School in Lincoln Heights. She put up the child for adoption and the mother lives in Fresno and doesn't want anything to do with our gang banger.

Maybe paid her off ! Since idiot wants to be Governor or on the National scene.

Yeah, yeah, 12:16 - same song different verse. CD14 knows it by heart.

"He's only been in office SIX MONTHS, give him time to learn his job...

It's ONLY his first year (and he's been helping John Kerry), blah, blah, blah...

It's ONLY been 18 months, blah, blah, blah...

It's ONLY... (now WHERE the hell did he go?)

Exactly 1:45 p.m. and now some of the same people are starting in on his replacement... he just got there, give him time, they cry.

Except Huizar's only got an 18 month term to begin with and he's already missing meeting and blowing off campaign promises.

The Garment & Citizen item is a little slippery. Monica isn't given a title yet, but she's already certain she's running for School Board. So, get that: plans for what to do with the rest of 2005 aren't apparently firm, but they are for 2006. I'd like to see a title suggestive of a specific job for Monica.

You are so right on! Riordan backed all of the losing candidates for school board and when they lost - he lost it. (although that may have started when he called that girl a dirty little girl) Hertzberg thought it was a great bandwagon to jump on with his misdirected, misguided enthusiasm and now poor Antonio is facing the wrath of all of the many, many, many voters who don't like Riordan or Hertzberg. He's starting to be lumped in with the two of them. Sad. So sad. So many things wrong with the city and he has to choose the school to start with AND cause tension with all of his old UTLA and LAUSD friends. Bad advice Antonio Villaraigosa. You promised LAUSD you would work with them, not bash them over the head with a verbal hammer.

Please get away from Riordan and Hertzberg before they ruin you completely.

Thank you Robert Greene. If read one bad thing about you here, trust me - it's only because you are doing the right thing.

Your supporters outnumber the people bitching about you.

We need reporters like Robert Greene who aren't afraid to report the truth. Keep it up Robert. You do have a hell of a lot more support citywide.

Let's be honest. AV is not going to back Monica. She's cool, but not a leader and she can't raise money. Jose is still just Jose and is not relevant to this election.

I guess Jose figured out a way to get rid of Monica G. without making it appear that he needed to step up his game for the City Council move. That's loyalty for you.
