Open Thread for Wednesday

Black Monday is the name ascribed to Monday October 19, 1987. On that day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 22.6%, the largest one-day decline in recorded stock market history. This one-day decline was not confined to the United States, but mirrored all over the world. By the end of October, stock markets in Australia had fallen 41.8%, Canada 22.5%, Hong Kong 45.8%, and the United Kingdom 26.4%.

Villaraigosa Sues Himself
By Walter Moore – October 19, 2005

Villaraigosa promised new leadership, and he’s delivering on that promise – but not in a good way. The Los Angeles Times reported today that the City is suing the MTA for dumping waste into city storm drains. That’s right: the City, of which Villaraigosa is the head, is suing the MTA, of which Villaraigosa is also the head.

Perhaps Villaraigosa – who failed the bar exam four times before giving up – believes the best way to win a lawsuit is to be both the plaintiff and the defendant. For us taxpayers, however, it means footing the legal bill for both sides of the litigation. Perhaps the Mayor could interrupt his busy photo-op schedule briefly and spend a few hours actually running these two governmental entities, rather than turning Los Angeles into a “lawsuit-ocracy.”

Why isn't Jose Huizar participating in the debates like the rest of the candidates? Seems he's missed about 5.

Huizar thinks he is too good for the community, won't bother to show up.

Or

He may think he will win this by sitting around and having the mayor do all the talking, btw, why would you want Huizar to speak, he might mess things up for himself,

Heard Huizar "talk" for himself on radio last week.

Very unimpressive.

Brief synopsis: "I'm from Mexico, poor immigrant, Princeton, Princeton, Princeton (did I mention Princeton?), lawyer, lawyer, lawyer, built schools schools schools, got lots of endorsements."

What has he DONE?

He graduated from Princeton and became a lawyer... WEREN'T YOU LISTENING?

I checked. He only got a master's in urban planning from Princeton. His undergrad degree was from Berkeley, and his law degree from UCLA -- as opposed to the "People's College of Law."
