One More Day to Pad the Resume
Even though the Mayor hosted his press avail yesterday, his 100th days actually lands on Saturday. That gives him today to pad the resume one last time before the curtain falls officialy on the events of the first 100 days from which he will be judged. Below are some round-ups and thoughts from Thursday's avail...
But first we have this quote from last nights Hockey game: When Kings announcer Bob Miller asked the seemingly ubiquitous Villaraigosa if he ever got a rest, the mayor replied, "I go from morning to night, but I'm like a kid in a candy store." -- (Source-CNS)
That kind-of sums him up pretty good. Now to the coverage:

I've read all three papers and it doesn't sound as if Antonio has done a damn thing in 100 days. His excuses are pathetic. Last night on KCAL 9 both reporters stated that he gets thumbs up for PR.
Another quote, "Is he out there at the expense of doing his job"? Absolutely. I can't believe the e-mails and Antonio using DONE as much as he is to plead and beg people to attend his citywide service tomorrow. Many are boycotting because they don't believe its the job of residents to clean up.

Note that the people who post here, amorously, saying "AV's done a GREAT job," as mayor never give any specifics.
Why?
Because they can't. Same thing when he was supposedly a councilmember.
It's just a "feeling" they have.
Some things never change. You can still fool some of the people all of the time, and those people are called. . .

You are probably a Latino who is jealous of your fellow compadre doing good for the city. Have you noticed Latinos are envious of each other. They all want something bigger better than their neighbor, if they don't, they trash them to infinity. Vengeance.

Where's the LEADERSHIP? AV didn't take a stand on some of the biggest issues affecting LA. What about the MTA controversey in CD14? The DWP pay raise, cleaning up city hall. Now again he's flip flopping like Zine and going back to wanting control of LAUSD but only when his term is up.

AV is mayor, not because he was qualified or competent, but because it was "time" for a Latino to be mayor (any Latino, doesn't matter).

It was idiotic to elect someone mayor who did nothing as a city councilmember for two years, and then expect his job "performance" to improve once mayor.
You get what you elect. A mediocre (at best) CM begets an even less competent mayor. They don't get better with promotion, they get worse!
Thumbs up for PR, Mayor. Enjoy the clips.

What has AV done? he has let people know that LA has a Mayor, which will lead people to demand serious solutions to the lack of cops, terrible traffic, and failing schools. Solutions to these problems will require some very difficult and painful decisions wherein some services will be cut to pay for more cops, new buses and subways, and for better schools. He is starting to build a concencus so that when he has to make decisions, the people will support him.
Also, his appointments have been top notch, and will hopefully move the departments ina positive direction.
On the negative side, it seems like the same old same old, as far as public employees go. They get the raise they may even desreve, but without productivity gains and accountability. AV has set up expectatiins he cant deliver on vis a vis the schools.
Finally, the mayor really doesnt have a ton of power and that will hurt AV because he wont have the resources to do what he wants to do.
Overall, I think, a very good start, that will soon be tempered by the hard, and costly decisions that will have to be made.

Do you know what was the overall theme of the ENTIRE campaign was dumb ass?
It was ethics -- or did you forget all the crap Hahn got LA into.
Grand Jury probes,
Indictments,
Ethics Investigations,
Fines,
DA Probes,
FBI,
City Attorney investigations.
The first PROMISE the mayor fulfilled was kicking out all the lobbyists off city commissions.
Second promise, Making every new commissioner sign an ethics pledge.
Third campaign promise, hiring an in-house ethics attorney.
All campaign promises met, and it was the stench of this last mayor that made the NEW mayor clean house.

What were the TOP threads in every speech...
Fix schools, fix traffic, hire LOTS more cops, stop making sweatheart big $$ deals that cost the city bundles, yada, yada, yada,... OUCH. No improvements, and NONE in sight. Cronyism running rampart, more than ever.
By the way, when does that TERRIBLE, unethical, criminal, ex-mayor James Hahn got to jail?
OOOPS, no charges, no claims he was behind ANY corruption. DAMN, so much for YOUR theme.
Anonymous said:
So, your point -- 11:19 Av-lover is, we get a "supposedly" more ethical city government.
And the tradeoff is nothing ever really gets done.
Hmmm, let me think about that one. I'm sure sure the tradeoff is worth it, especially since none of AV's supposedly more "ethical" cronies have yet proven they actually will be less "corrupt."
Is this a replay of the incompetent, but more likable Jimmy Carter replacing the bland Gerald Ford - and then plunging us into a tailspin economy?
Remember, we just needed to "tighten our belts."

The funny thing about all this "good PR" is if you get AV's main handlers off-mike, they'll admit (sometimes), they know he's a propped up, invented, egomaniacal empty suit. That's why all the flailing and photo ops are necessary, to create the perception of forward movement.
But he's THEIR empty suit, damnit.

Cleaning up city hall---Antonio has appointed people who at best are questionable after his big campaign speeches, his second cousin, kid's godmother, people who endorsed him during campaign, the wives of men who endorsed and helped his campaign etc.etc.
MORE COPS---Antonio promised and now has not delivered a damn thing. He voted against a citywide tax even though LA voted 64% in favor. It failed by 2%. There's tons of money for cops if AV only sat down and used 1/2 his brain. IF he can find money to transfer to increase Cultural Affairs he can do the same for more cops
DWP PAY RAISE---AV put LA in a bad situation now cause the other unions want the same type of deal. Are they going to strike when council says NO?
MTA---AV is the chairman yet hasn't done or said anything about the huge mess in CD14 with Gold Line
RACIAL TENSIONS SOUTH LA---Antonio again is playing both sides of the issue. He doesn't want to piss off the blacks or Latinos so he does the cowardly thing and stands in the middle. No leadership
IF the media had the guts to report his bad record as a councilmlan you can bet he wldn't be mayor. Like Larry Elder said the media was afraid if they did report the facts they would be called racist.

SCI-ARC LOT
A hearing is scheduled for May 19 in Los Angeles Superior Court over a 15-acre plot in the Arts District just west of the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) along Traction Avenue. The school had been using the empty parcel as a parking lot. In 2004, developer Merco Group paid Dynamic Builders $12.5 million for the land; Merco planned to build a mixed-use development of rental and condominium units on the site. School representatives contend there was a verbal agreement that portions of the site would be sold to SCI-Arc. Richard Meruelo of Merco Group and Dynamic officials deny an offer was made. Efforts to resolve the issue have failed. The case lists SCI-Arc as the plaintiff and Merco Group and Dynamic Builders as defendants. Elizabeth Mann, an attorney for SCI-Arc, said the bench trial should take no more than 10 days. Meruelo said that, depending on the outcome of the litigation, construction of the project could begin as soon as the end of the year.

Was it worth it ADV to accept money from your friend Vignali & Son who is a major Los Angeles drug dealer with connections to Florida? Was it worth it to take all that money for a letter disregarding all ethics? Was it worth it to help Richard Meruelo to practically steal the school property under LAUSD's own watch. How could you go to the elem. school and look at the children and know your so corrupted you stole from them. 100 Days? If I remember right, during the first 100 days Hahn faced a new charter and unprecedented neighborhood councils, a majority of brand new council members, a REAL budget crisis, preparation for the upcoming secession vote, the formation of PCAC in the Harbor, and, oh by the way, 9/11 and the security crisis that followed immediately afterwards.
I also remember the MAV supporters already sharpening the knives while shaking his hand. I hope they haven't aleady started to press the delete button on the promises they made to the City of Los Angeles, but who could blame them?
After all, MAV has been "butchered" in the press and suffered one crisis after another recently with the budget surplus, downtown revitalization and overall construction boom, and citywide support.
What did we expect? Photo ops? Well, we have plenty of those...

"Those appearances, said political consultant Rick Taylor, have allowed Los Angeles to "once again believe in itself."
"When there's a fire, he's out there fighting it. When there's a home that needs to be built, he's building it. When there's jury duty, he's there serving it. When (Hurricane) Katrina happens, he's there talking about it," Taylor said. "You feel like he knows what he's saying and you believe him. I think he's making some of his doubters start to believe."

10 Schools Run Out of Time to Catch Up
Nine campuses in L.A. and 1 in Visalia top the No Child Left Behind law's seven-year limit. Their fate is uncertain.
The federal No Child Left Behind education law gave schools seven years to meet achievement goals, laying out increasingly dire consequences — including the removal of school staff — for those that fell short.
But now, 10 schools have exceeded that seven-year timetable, leaving them in undefined territory and spawning renewed criticism by education officials about the fairness of the law.
At the 3,000-student Wilson High in El Sereno, the district replaced the principal and made other administrative moves. It also increased funding for teacher training and required Saturday classes for low-performing ninth-graders.

I don't share Rick Taylor's opinion. I am willing to give the mayor 350 days but the reason Taylor loses so many elections for his clients is because to him sizzle is more important than substance. When a mayor drives to an airport because a plane's landing gear fails, that is idiotic. The mayor impresses Taylor because "he's talking" about Katrina! while according to Bratton and Baca LA has the worst homeless situation ever - and no action from our mayor.
Villaraigosa may turn out to be a great mayor - I think it's too early to say. But I don't think anybody will take Rick Taylor too seriously when he makes such superficial and laughable comments.

Villaraigosa has accomplished a great deal in his first 100 days as L.A.’s mayor. Here’s a partial list:
1. Longest-Running Campaign In History.
Most candidates would stop campaigning after winning an election. Not Villaraigosa. Instead, he is the King of the Daily Photo-Op. Since the election, I've seen local TV news stories showing him: singing "happy birthday" to a little girl on the subway; riding a horse (aka "Tony on a pony"); standing at a construction site, holding a shovel; standing at another site, holding an Olympic torch; and racing the Jet Blue flight to the airport. You can even see his portrait plastered on the backs of MTA buses. Alas, the one place you never see him is at his desk, doing his job ...

After the rally, we delve into the side streets, which happen to be mere blocks from Pacheco's home. Huizar is wearing khaki pants and a light colored shirt, the sleeves rolled up two folds. Walking with Huizar are three volunteers who quickly fall into a routine: Toting ledgers that list names and addresses, they knock on doors where the resident is classified as "Undecided" (no need to waste time if a voter is already Yes or No). The volunteers work both sides of a block simultaneously; if no one is home, they leave fliers. When someone answers, they call Huizar over.
The first person to open the door is a Venezuelan woman who can't vote, and the next is a 50ish man who, when Huizar asks for his support, is noncommittal. The third home, where a woman in her 70s comes into the driveway, is a gold mine. She smiles at Huizar and scowls when Pacheco's name comes up. "I don't like him. He was the councilman and he didn't do squat," she harrumphs. Then she brings up Villaraigosa, who has endorsed Huizar. "He didn't do anything either."

As for the COPS -- county-wide sales tax not a CITY one.
Sounds nice right? Right? Right? Wrong! Here's the most inherent problems with approving the this sales tax:
1) The County Superviosrs have had a very large surpluses for the last couple of years and not one red cent went for the Sheriffs Dept (to which this Sales tax would get the Lion's share) Meaning non LA city voters who follow closely to the County level saw a direct conflict.
2) Here's the flaw as to why this tax will NEVER pass. If you're a voter in a smaller city lets say a good middle class city (plenty of them within LA County) like Pasadena or Culver City whose police force is well equipped with the existing funds where crime is down and their city footprints are smaller what are the changes the large group of these smaller cities with a higher concentration of voter turnout will be acceptable of an increase that will not fully benefit THEM? The answer is NO, and with the statistic of it only get 64% of the county vote (Approx 70-75% of LA city voters approved it, that leaves little more than half of the Non-City of LA voters approving the vote)
Traffic - Setting the MTA agenda for more subways -- he's acknowledged this is a 20 year strategy.
Actually it was Councilman Tom LaBonge who bravely spearheaded that effort, I know, he's my councilman!
