Meat for the CD 14 Crowd

The LA Weekly runs "Propostition Arnold: Election '05 -- José vs. Nick -- The past confronts the future for control of L.A.’s Eastside political machine"

Favorite excerpt:
“Republican,” Huizar says, looking at his list and ringing the next doorbell. A woman answers.

“Sorry to bother you on a Friday evening,” the candidate begins, but he’s cut off.

“You know, I’ve already picked somebody,” the woman says. “Nick Pacheco. I liked him when he was our councilman before. I was sort of brokenhearted when Vila-Garosa won. But now we have him as mayor.”
Martini Republic adds their two cents as well on the LA Weekly article.

The LA Times runs "Spending Limit for Council Race Lifted." Article follows...
The $330,000 spending limit on the race for the City Council seat for District 14 has been lifted, so candidates can spend as much as they would like.

Two groups — the California State Council of Service Employees and the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union — have together spent $51,153 on independent materials in support of Jose Huizar.

The limit is lifted after independent expenditures for any one candidate tops $50,000.

Love this...Ten of the 13 City Council members, including most of those who worked alongside Pacheco when he was one of them, have backed Huizar. So has former Mayor Richard Riordan, who once was Pacheco’s highest-profile backer. Democrats, Republicans, labor, big business. All are onboard with Huizar. Why? Two reasons, apparently. One, that’s where Villaraigosa wants them, and he’s the most powerful man in town at the moment. “I really need to get my projects through City Hall, and I don’t need the mayor mad at me,” one council member explained under condition, of course, of anonymity.

That LA Weekly states that the only thing Jose has is Antonio's endorsement. How can Jose be passionate in 2003 and walk and campaign HARD for Nick then all of a sudden cause Antonio is mayor switch his alliance? Jose bad mouthed Antonio worst then anyone I know. He told the community Antonio is lying to you and he's going to run for Mayor. Jose is a gutless man with no balls. He has no character or integrity if he doesn't see anything wrong with how he's behaving.

Yeah it's funny how Huizar "volunteers" - we know they are all getting paid - are now saying that "Pacheco didn't do anything." If that is the case, why did Huizar endorse him in 2003? What has changed? Huizar people are starting to target known Pacheco voters and trying to convince them to turn - I guess they realize they don't have enough votes. They are spending 1/2 and hour or more, door to door, trying to convince people to switch their votes. Rule #1 in door to door campaigning, don't spend more then 5 minutes at a door - you can get more votes by not arguing. Oh wait, there are no more votes for Huizar.

Why are Washington and Sacramento special interests supporting Huizar with Independent Expenditures? Down the line local taxpayers - residents of CD14 and the city - are going to pay the price for all this!

Is it true that some of Huizar's paid canvassers are actually walking for Nick. They call themselves guerrilla organizers. At least that's the talk in some popular East L.A. watering holes. If this is true, chalk one up for the underdog. I wonder if Nick will report this on his fundraising reports. Is there any effective way of keeping track of field canvassers?

How much does a Councilmember make?

Is it around $145,000? And some running for CD14 are spending close to 3 times this amount.

I wonder what is going on in Martin Ludlow's former council district 10? Is it official yet that Herb Wesson is the Councilmen?

Jan Perry has created 7 homeless shelters in CD9 to get rid of some of the homeless in downtown LA so all the big developers could make millions. Residents in CD9 are mad at Jan for busing in the homeless and now their all over the area. LA Weekly shows people what a vindictative bitch Jan can really be. She thinks she's above it all and I'm glad they nailed her.

So what's difference here between what Jan is doing compared to other Councilmen turned Mayors who did nothing about it, other than step on their necks on route to the 3rd Floor of City Hall?

At least Jan is trying to do something about and actually get some activity and businesses Downtwown and South LA.

October 20, 2005 5:19 PM

Plus with those developers making the $$$ it would be recycled back into the city economy so that there's more services for the Homeless.

So you're statement actually makes Jan looks like one of the few councilmembers who is actually doing something in LA.

I know most working to middle class taxpayers like you and me aren't going to pay for it so why not provide these shelters so that business $$$ can invest in the city. Hell it worked for Guiliani in NYC.

Perry has leveled previous charges against Torres that investigators dismissed as “unfounded,” according to Internal Affairs documents. In 1997, when Torres first ran for City Council, Perry, while chief of staff to incumbent Rita Walters, accused Torres of interfering at a polling location. “The allegations appear fabricated,” investigators noted, according to Internal Affairs documents. “Ms. Perry’s account of this incident and the allegation are not credible.”

L.A.D.W.P what a bunch of lucky guys, work day consists of one hour and half of morning "coffee" break & when you arrive to the job another 45min to 1hour of talking about the job and B.S, which brings us to about 9-9:30am, work 2hours and then go for a 1hour lunch, get back at about 12:10 or so talk about the job again for another 20 min to 30 min, which bring us to 12:40 or so, start working for 2 more hard hours to work off that lunch from Hooters, and definetely stop working by 2:30 so you have enough time to go to Home Depot to buy that soap dish and dimmer outlet for the house. About 3 hours and 45 minutes of essential work out of a 9 hour day, thank god these guys got a huge raise because with looming "tool inspections" around the corner you need $$$$ to buy the best carne asada and chicken for that half day Bar B que. "What a bunch of luck guys"
