Jim Alger Focused On Assembly Win

Jim Alger sends over the following press release about his Assembly campaign. No doubt, given the registration in his district, he's got a tough row to hoe. Still, he could win given his moderate views, experience with the Neighborhood Council and the press he got from his rescue mission.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
38th STATE ASSEMBLY SEAT IN PLAY FOR DEMOCRATS

Santa Clarita, CA - As the quarterly financials are being filed it appears that for the first time in years a Democrat is positioned to make a viable run for the 38th Assembly District seat being vacated by Republican Keith Richman.

Jim Alger (D- Northridge) is currently the only Democrat in the race but that isn't the story. With $10,000.00 of personal funds and a campaign that held its first fundraiser on September 24, Alger is prepared to report raising around $25,000.00 with approximately $20,000.00 cash on hand. The last Democrat to run in the 38th raised less than $1,000.00 and took 38% of the vote against a popular incumbent.

"Keith Richman was always presented to the voters as a 'moderate' Legislator and that is how he would win," campaign spokesperson Michael O'Connell said earlier today, "but looking at the field of candidates, Jim Alger is the only true moderate being offered and that is good for us. Jim truly appeals to cross over voters, without them this race can't be won."

Alger acknowledged that the race will be difficult. "I am under no delusion that this race is going to be easy," Alger said, "the special interest money machine is in high gear but this seat is in play if we as Democrats step up, take it seriously, and take it seriously early."

Alger is no stranger to difficult challenges. He has made a name for himself as Councilmember, and current President, of a Los Angeles Neighborhood Council fighting an attempt by Wal Mart to build a store in Northridge, defeating a massive rate hike by the LADWP and most recently coordinating a civilian rescue and relief operation in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, flying his personal aircraft to the region to aid the evacuees.

"With support from everyday people such as school teachers, small business owners, labor organizers, law enforcement, and community leaders this campaign is breathing life into an area that is usually written off and I intend to take that life to Sacramento" Alger concluded.

Knowing the district he certainly has an uphill challenge but there is no way to take away from those numbers, raising that kind of money is extremely impressive.

He is definately running like a serious candidate and his potential challengers are extremists either right or left, depending on wether or not you take the rumors of other Democrats talking about getting in seriously, which I don't.

Jim just is definately the only known Democrat with the cross over appeal to pull it off but he'll need a continued strong showing in the fundraising department.

This should make certain LA City Council members happy.

As as long as Jim is focused on winning the Assembly seat, he isn't focused on calling there sorry asses to the carpet for various shinanigans.

Of course if he loses the Assembly, he might be in a perfect position to run for City Council.

Alger realy is the Little Engine that Could. He just keeps plugging along regardless of what his detractors say. You have to respect him for that, and a Democrat showing that kind of money in that kind of district is quite impressive.

Jim sure is making all the right moves.

With a 9 point spread in the district I am not convinced he can win but I am no longer convinced he won't.

A Democrat has no chance in this district. Jim has no chance with whatever crossover appeal he may have. Let's be certain. As for the Democratic primary, he has even less of a chance. Lyn Shaw, wife of labor powerhouse Jim Hilfenhaus, is a lock. She will have all the party support to be the token pinata for this one.

Token is right. No Democrat will ever win the 38th Assembly District under the current redistricting, or under a Prop 77 redistricting. Its mathematically impossible, unless the Republican candidate goes on a mass murder spree ! The Decline to States are very conservative in this District, and the last hope Granada Hills had of electing a Dem was Jon Lauritzen in 2000.

Lyn Shaw is not even in the race as a filed candidate and is not as popular as she would like to think.

Jim is showing that the race can be won, with a lot of hard work and has been working the campaign up and down the state, so he will win the nomination.

One or two good voter registration drives and Jim could squeak by.

What is this Lyn Shaw bs? All she ever does is sit in the back of the room and says "I am running".

She is a butt-ugly overweight stuck on herself person who acts as if she should be crowned princess and is pissed that Alger had the nerve to play in her sandbox.

Problem is that Alger threw her fat ass out of the sandbox without so much as mentioning her name, which is good because she changes it depending on the weather anyway. Half te time she is Shaw, thn when it is convenient for her she uses Hilfenhaus.

Sure, her getting married at the Democratic Convention went over well with party hacks, but that doesn't hold a candle to a guy who has ben in front of major issues fighting for the people instead of kissing ass on the political ladder.

I believe Democratic reg is up in SCV as a lot of limousine tree hugging liberals have moved out there in recent years. I met some folks from the SCV Democratic Club years back and had to laugh, but times have changed.

Its no longer the cowboy outpost it once was. Its not as left as Studio City, but moderate Republicans there could vote for someone like Jim and the Democrats will come out for him.

He's going to have some challenge in the West Valley and the Ventura County portion getting Republican votes, but that should be offset somewhat by the higher Democratic reg east of the 405. As well, the Valley is pretty much no longer Republican at all hardly.

Democrats do love to nominate people that have no chance whatsoever of winning, that way they don't have to actually DO anything they can just bitch about it not getting done.

If they're smart, they'll get behind Alger early, like the Republicans are doing with their gokden goose Smythe, but they aren't that smart so Lyn will keep screaming that she is in a race she isn't in a hope to stop Jim from getting to much momentum.

From what I can see, Jim not only is prepared for that, it looks like he planned for it.

Sam, if alger put together a voter registratin drive of 10,000 he could win handily.

I agree that he has cross over appeal, heck he talks about half his staff being Republicans in an obvious move to drive that point home.

He is also getting 10 times the free media than his rival and his rival is a frieking Mayor! That just shows how savy he really is.

If I had to guess, Jim is moving to knock out any Democratic opposition now while the left wing is busy screaming about the November election (which they already won).

In a district that is used to running the "Thousand Dollar Democrat" aka piniata, I am not sure you can "lock up" the race early.

But then again, given the numbers, Alger has the primary realistically locked up now. Anyone who gets in the race this late is nothing more than a spoiler who wants to see their name on a ballot.

Lyn does look like a dog who chased a bus and the bus stopped while she didn't, that's for sure.

She also has zero substance, no record of actually working for the commnity, and could never beat Alger in an issues based discussion, so how about all of you Alger fans smarten up and stop talking about her? Your the only people who do.

Look, Alger will mop the floor with that sorry excuse for an artificial candidate, so just keep doing what you've been doing and you'll come through the primary squarely positioned to run against Smyth, who doesn't have much mire substance than the bus chaser, but he does have the money to fake it.

I would like to give you some advice. First, there is this little thing called an IP address. When the same person makes 10 remarks, Mayor Sam knows. He also know who owns the ISP account and the location. While I can admire your attempts to pump up your candidacy, don't be dumb about it. Also, be careful what you say about Lyn Shaw. She has helped hundreds of candidates over the years a lot of people owe her and will support her. If you go after her too nasty you may just seal your own fate. Lyn will be endorsed by every Democratic elected official in the Valley, all of Labor, the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Vally, the California Democratic Party and will be on every slate mailer. Raising $15k is cute. Keep it up. I can hear the groundswell.

Unlike some other posters on this blog I do think Alger can win the Democratic nomination. What he has to do though is make sure to show up at more Democratic events. He was at the softball game which was great- he has a strong record on local issues and his opposition to Walmart was great. But from now until next June he should make an attempt to be at every dem event he can make it to. Lynn is at nearly every one of them-and the person who the base knows is the one that is going to win. So show up at everything from the DPSFV meeting to club events-for ex: if xyz club has a showing of an anti-walmart film- call the club President and ask if you can speak, etc...show up at a campaign office against one of the Props- don't have to make it a big deal-but show up so the base knows your with them. And put your party on your website-no one can vote for you in the Dem primary if they don't know your a dem. And register more dems, moderate dems in that district! Go Jim! California needs you!

4:43 Anon,

I work on Jim's campaign and let me tell you what he did today:

At 8:30 am he was on the way to Santa Clarita for a 9am meeting with a local elected.

At 1:30 he was had lunch with his wife in Simi Valley

At 2:30 he was in Sunland working on a local issue there.

At 3:30 he was on the way back out to Moorpark

At 5:30 he had a meeting with an elected in Pacoima.

With the exception of the 5:30, Mike staffed him all day.

The point is, you picked the wrong day to accuse Jim or Mike of posting things on Mayor Sam.

Jim is not happy about the comments regarding Lyn, but Jim doesn't view her as a candidate because she isn't one until she files.

In other words, this campaign just this instant spent more time on Lyn than it has in 3 weeks. Jim is running on his record, not against a ghost candidate. Even if Lyn does get in the race, or anyone else for that matter, this campaign will be on issues and NOT on personal attacks.

October 03, 2005 7:40 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Lyn has no issues, everyone knows that. Why else would she have her lone supporter on Mayor Sam posting over the top nasty stuff about her just to blame it on Jim? It's called a distraction. That is what desperate people do and she can see her party support fading rapidly as Jim makes in-roads at every event he attends.

ANYONE who knows Jim knows that he would never engage in the type of harsh personal attacks that have been made here today. He is a kind and compasionate man and would never condone such actions.

Good evening,

I want to thank everyone on here for the support you have shown me. It is truly appreciated. That being said, I would rather not hear that my supporters are engaging in personal mean-spirited attacks.

Those types of attacks do not represent my views, and only goes to further distrust in the political process. Rest assured that none of my staff was involved. In fact, they were all accounted for so in no way did these offensive remarks emanate from my campaign.

I haven't had much time to be active here of late, but do read printouts of happenings reported on this blog. I enjoy having my "ear to the ground". To that end I have made some changes in direct response to certain "advise" that I felt was appropriate.

I look forward to the discussion of ideas that will take place over the next year.

If another Democrat decides to enter the race, that only goes to broaden the discussion. However, at some time in the very near future we will reach the point where all serious candidates would be filed with the Secretary of State so the voters have the opportunity to compare the various approaches of each candidate timely enough for that candidate to remain viable for a November run. Waiting too long merely creates a situation where the candidate will be unable to gain enough momentum to climb the long hill to victory in November. Personally, I believe that time may have passed but others will have to decide for themselves. In the 38th we will need a running start to say the least.

Over the next several months many ideas will come from my campaign, with any luck even a few good ones. Specific ideas on how to handle some local issues such as providing local control over land use decisions, bringing the voice of Joe Citizen on par with Joe Lobbyist , workable solutions for traffic, and ending the stranglehold of special interest money on local politics. The theme of the campaign will be returning the keys to the people.

These ideas will be more than bullet points. They will be specific proposals to change existing law and when released will be prepared in a “Bill Ready” version. These proposals will create a legislative agenda as the year goes on that will place me in a position to hit the ground running upon arriving in Sacramento.

As a friend of mine used to say “Don’t talk about it, be about it”. That is precisely what I intend to do, because I believe that the voters deserve no less.

Once again thank you for your support. Your ideas are always working, and if you see me on the street or at an event, feel free to say hi.

See, this is why we like Jim. He just says it like he sees it. I will bet good money that his consultants told him not to post here, but he saw what he perceived as an injustice and stood up to correct it.

I respectfully disagree with you Jim.

Lyn has been trashing you every chance she gets. She honestly thinks it will be handed to her because it is "her turn," the people can just go to hell.

She thinks the Democrats are so dumb they would endorse her even though it is becoming well known your the better candidate.

She runs around telling people your a "Republican Plant" which is funny because we know your a lifelong Democrat although sometimes I wonder why.

She sees your cohorting with Republicans as a weakness, most of us see it as an amazing strength.

She knows that she has zero chance of winning, but wants the perceived power of a nomination to help her union husband.

The list goes on and on.

So Jim, if I call her a fat, ugly, loudmouth, abnoxious, snot nosed, piece of lard with no substance in public policy whatsoever, who has absolutely no place as a candidate for this party, forgive me, but that is how I feel.

The bottom line is you are the only Dem with a chance, and as has been corectly stated the only Dem in the race because while SOMEONE wants to throw rocks from afar, she hasn't got the balls to actually get in the race herself.

Believe me, I have heard her and her husband say much worse about you and it makes me sick to hear them try and tear you down like that.

Oh and to the ingrate who tried to say the campaign was involved with my previous post (or Jim or Mike directly) I am not with the Alger campaign. Check ip addresses all you want. I am an active Democrat and know both Shaw and Alger, although neither knows I am here.

Before you say I am some deranged Alger fan, if I heard him say the things I heard out of Shaw or Hilfenhaus, I would be railing against him now instead of the other way around.

Hell that must have been a killer organizing job. All Jim Is doing with his minions attacking in a vile fashion is assuring that after he is wiped out in the Democratic Primary he will then get no Labor or Democratic Party support for his run against Mitch in CD12 his true reason for running in the 38th( to make connections. If he or his amatuer campaign had any brains they would seek a deal rather than making sure the only thing he is elected to is a neighborhood council. The stench of hipocracy from Alger. To attack Lyn Shaw, The Chair of the Women's Caucus of the California Democratic Party( who got 10 times as many votes as Alger for her election as Alger for his) as non-substantive just shows where his fools errand campaign is at. Especially humorous is the attack on her being asked to be the spokeperson to Democratic Clubs by Planned Parenthood on NO on Prop 73 by Alger fans, him being publicly silent about the attack, while asking for his 2 phoneline living room headquarters to be used as phone bank for No on 73 campaign..

While most of the litany of allegations made in the most recent rant are not worthy of a response, some of these items need to be clarified.

As Marc has said, Jim has said and now I am saying, not only did the attacks on Lyn NOT come from this campaign, we do not condone such personal attacks whatsoever.

The notion that Jim is running for anything other than the California State Assembly is simply untrue. He has a well put together and increasingly well funded campaign that for the first time in years puts the 38th Assembly District in play for a Democrat.

As for running against Mitch for CD 12, the CD 12 seat will not be vacated for over 6 years and Michell Englander has assured people that he is not running for that seat. Jim Alger takes him at his word, but doesn't see that as even remotely relevant to a State Assembly Race.

Jim Alger has not, and never will attack Lyn Shaw or any other Democrat. If he has something to say, he says it and doesn't hide behind "anonymous".
