Bill Bennett Busts

Sometimes, my fellow Republicans make it really hard for me to be a happy go lucky moderate GOP guy.

Bill Bennett - America's favorite gambler, former Reagan Administration Education Secretary and now a talkradio host - made one heck of a statement on a recent program: "If you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose; you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down."
"If you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose; you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down."
Bennett was trying to somehow link the rise in abortions to the decrease in crime rates in recent years. Its an interesting argument, but not sure if Bennett is on the mark. Bennett qualified his statement by adding that aborting black babies would be "an impossible, ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down."

Bennett is correct in that statistics show the Black Americans committ a disproportionate number of crimes, relative to their numbers in the general population. Liberals would say that its because most Blacks live in poverty (not true - most Blacks live at the middle class level). Conservative Black leaders like Larry Elder say that disproportionate Black crime rates are based on fatherless homes, unwed pregnancies, drugs, Black on Black crime and other conditions that exist in higher percentages in the Black community than in others.

So this goes back to Bennett's claim, would a lower Black birth rate result in lower crime rates, and is a lower Black birth rate a result of increased abortions? You would have to look at the percentage of abortions had by Blacks and I have got to believe that a higher percentage of abortions are had by upper middle class, single, professional white women.

I would maintain that lower Black birth rates are not the results of abortions, or at least solely abortions, but due to a rising Black middle class. As well, a lower crime rate can be partially attributed to lower overall birth rates in America, which started dropping in the late 80s and early 90s. Fewer teenagers = less crime. You can add to that increased efforts to fight crime - better technology, increased police staffing levels (not in LA, but other cities), new policy methods, etc.

So getting back to Bennett, I understand what he was saying, but he's off the mark. More importantly, it was an incredibly stupid thing to say. You can expect it to only further inflame those who play racial politics - already in overdrive over the Federal response to Hurricane Katrina. Quite honestly, it was a very stupid thing to say. Thanks to Bennett, we're now going to get a parade of the usual suspects - Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Maxine Waters and all the liberal race baiters who are going to ride this train to glory. They will call on Bennett's employer to fire him and on President Bush to denounce him, taking attention away from the issues of the day. Even Howard Stern is on the rampage, and that can't be good.

Way to go Billy!

Hey, I'm a moderate Republican as well, and I agree totally. What a stupid thing to say.

But, that's nothing new for Bennett, who insisted on getting into our issues many years ago, taking on Pete Wilson and others.

Bennett, it seems, has an opinion about everything, whether it is his business or not.

The only good thing about this is that it should shut him up for good.

He's tried to "modify" it by saying he meant "Black AND WHITE babies", but, of course, that's not what the idiot savant said.

Jesse, Al and Maxine must be lovin' it...

If you abort all babies of any race or ethnic group crime will drop. Even people who work in government can understand that. It's not complicated.

Very disturbing that comments like that are made. Even more disturbing that the LA County Board of Supervisors is actually closing the birthing ward at MLK Medical Center so that many black babies will die.

With comments like Bennett's and actions like Zev Yaroslavsky's, it is apparent racism is alive and well in this country. pathetic.

BOY, did you read this wrong. . . He wasn't saying it was a GOOD thing, he was CONEMNING people who use abortion as a means of ANY kind of social control, by using a totally absurb example of what his opponents are already suggesting AND doing.

NOW you're just being silly...

What a stupid and insensitive comment to make, regardless of his intentions.

Bennett sells himself as someone far above the average person in intelligence and in philosophical beliefs.

He should be ashamed of himself to even think those kinds of thoughts regardless of his beliefs.

If he was looking for attention, as he has with some of his statements in the past, well he has accomplished that very well....at the expense of his integrity and future crediblity.

He should shut his mouth and just continue his writings...with of course them being carefully edited for lack of good judgement and/or taste.

I am a republican, but want Bill said was racism.

He is wrong, completely wrong, his comments do not help just divide all parties.

I'm (1") close to changing parties. I'm trying very hard not to go this far, but I do not see where my party, Republican, is doing anything for the people.

Are there any conservative democrats?

Sammy, the quote was taken completely out of context and you should rethink your post. His statement was to make the point of how ridiculous such an argument actually is and it has been twisted around to make Dr. Bennett look like a race baiter. This is a nonstory. Can anyone find anything in his long public career to suggest that he is a racist? He has always advocated vouchers for schools which empowers Blacks. The media also went after him because he liked to gamble in Vegas with his own money, a legal activity last I checked. Meanwhile the Mayor of NO, Nagin, has a sit-down with that noted racist and anti-Semite Louie Farrakhan and the media/democrats are deafeningly silent. Sammy, you are the best blogger on the local scene but stick to local politics and guessing which celebrities will die next.....Your guy from upstairs.

What is the Democratic Party?

-Fail to even comprehend danger of biological islamic jihad against USA.

-Refuse to acknowledge tax cuts stimulate greater activity and greater revenues.

-Tolerant of all religions except Christianity.

-Believe all earnings and profits belong to federal government (and them).

-They devalue human life; created 'right' to murder unborn.

-Slaughtered 25% of Generation X and Y.

-They create laws via corrupt judges, usurp legislative and executive branches.

-Can't be trusted with national defense

-Now seek to homosexualize the civilization.

This is beyond transparent. The Democrats' (the jackass mascot has never been more fitting) demand to see confidential documents on Bolton is an obvious political ploy to stalemate confirmation, but do they realistically expect "someone better" to be nominated? Do they think the president is going to shrug his shoulders, say "shucks", and nominate some "Blame America First" sycophant for ambassador?

No, I don't think even Ted Kennedy is that dumb (unless he is on a real bender). This is nothing more than political grandstanding.

The old saying "lead, follow or get out of the way" is appropriate here - unfortunately Democrats have no clue on the first concept, are too stubborn to do the second, and seem hell-bent on avoiding the third.

I hope President Bush pulls a recess appointment just so we can hear them whine

Who on earth ever thought that Republicans all think alike? There are diverse opinions within partisian groups, ethnic groups, cultural groups, professional groups, etc., etc. etc.

I am sick and tired of hearing from the Mayor and the Media that because Bill Bennett says and does many stupid things, that is a reflection of partisans of his ilk. Doesn't make logical sense.

STOP all the stupid attack talk and name calling. Your all beginning to sound like...Bill Bennett !!!

The bottom line is .....these thoughts should have never, ever entered his mind let alone rolled off of his lips..... and I am a Republican.

Sometimes when someone says something for the first time......and says it would be a bad thing or outrageous thing to even consider, what they are really doing is teeing it up for discussion that never would have ever taken place or been thought of had not they mentioned it.

Bennett is not a stupid man, despite his comments, and I for one find it impossible to believe that he didn't consider the uproar and the consequences before he opened his mouth.

Thus, his comments I believe were considered and were intentionally stated......and I am a moderate Republican.

Bill's comments whether in context or out were inappropriate at least racist at worst. But...... so are those of Jesse, Maxine, Sharptin etc. Both sides take shear pleasure in discussing or arguing the polar ends of real problems and are satisfied on "one ups-mansship" or "gotch-ya" sound bite politics of today's media. Real solutions to today's problems will never be achieved unless we all stop being so defensive and so angry. Those of us who really want to help our neighbors or fellow man on issues of school improvement, poverty, affordable housing, pollution , traffic congestion, senior needs and other meaning full quality of life issues are forced to "team up" on either end. Thus no action, just talk (or screeming)..
I hope there are Moderate Democrats willing to "team up" with moderate Republicans like myself to really change the Greater Los Angeles area.
Our parents and children look to us to continue the process of improving our communities through working together as neighbors regardless of race, religious beliefs, sexual-orientation, dog or cat lover, taste great less filling, or paper or plastic. Stop choosing sides lets just say, it doesn't matter, lets fix something today and tomorrow we will fix something else.
Republicans love Los Angeles also...

10:13 You sound like an insider. Tell me, if you have knowledge of both camps, which one is doing better?

How many supporters attend Huizar's events v.s. Pacheco's?

Who has the most volunteers? (This is a big indication of real support-the amount of volunteers)

AV had an enormous amount of volunteers and he won. The candidate which cannot produce a good number of volunteers regardless of money and endorsements will lose.

You know neither side will accept you if you crossed over. It shouldn't be about crossing either way. We moderates on both sides need to speak out and defend the moderate's viewpiont. Elect those who will work for real change. Take big money out of the equation. No more $1000 a plate dinners or lunches. How about just showing up at a community meeting or a PTA function? No more press releases and photo ops. How about some guts to say no to special interests, corporate donors, unions, and lobbiests. Connect with the voters. Show us we mean something to you. Earn our votes, don't try to buy them with someone else's money.

At the beginning of this year, an episode of a children's animated PBS program titled "Postcards from Buster" was prevented from airing because Buster - a cartoon rabbit - visits a family in Vermont that's headed by a lesbian couple. The Dept. of Education intervened and threatened to take away federal funding if they aired the episode.

Seems it only fitting for the Dept. of Ed will take away the same funding for William Bennett's "Book of Virtues" following this moron's horrific and racially insensitive comments. Guess tolerance isn't one of Bill's virtues.
