DWP Union Threatens Strike

From the Daily News:

The contract with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 18, would give 8,000 DWP workers a 16.25 percent pay hike that could climb to 30 percent if inflation surges.

The proposal has drawn fire as it comes amid water-rate increases and other unions raising questions about equity. But city officials had questioned whether they could change the contract's terms because it already has been ratified by the union.

Union chief Brian D'Arcy has threatened a strike if the new pact isn't adopted by Oct. 1.

The hearing Wednesday by the Personnel Committee was the first public debate by council members on the contract. The split panel moved the contract forward without recommendation.

Councilman Dennis Zine, the committee's chairman, said Wednesday that he couldn't recommend approval of the agreement because of the potential for raises to balloon to 30 percent.

Zine said that would worsen the current disparity in salaries between DWP and other city union workers, could lead to increased utility rates, and cut into other city services.

"I'm not a gambler," Zine said. "At what point do we finally say enough is enough?"

Right now. That's when. Stick to your guns Dennis!

Solution:

Fire all DWP workers, outsource from local graduates and displaced workers from the hurricane displaced and unemployed, this is much better.

This is total B.S. How dare they threaten! They are all a bunch of crybabies. Word is the Neighborhood Councils and community organizatons are organizing to speak out against this pay hike. I agree with Zine that officers only make 6% and look how much these over paid city workers get?

I think the first two posts nicely sum of what should be done regarding the DWP issue. DWP workers already receive a decent salary. I am all for raises, but not one that could reach, if I am not mistaken, a 30% hike.

Antonio is going to cave to these workers. He badly needs a visible labor victory to pay back Ludlow and especially the County Fed for tanking Hahn's election. He also needs these guys to go out and walk for Huizar.

The city must assist the Federal Government and fire all DWP workers and give these jobs to unemployed local and victims of the Gulf.

Hey, haven't you forgotten to thank all those employees for the rolling blackouts that the City has faced and those soaring bills? Oh, wait . . . that's those other non-DWP companies.

So again, why can't they get a raise?

If DWP/IBEW gets this pay increase or even a fraction of it I say AV will only get 4 years. Knowing AV, he wasn't going to last that long anyways. He's campaigning for the Governor's office right now.

9:23 AM,

You idiot. All AV owes Ludlow is winning a slight majority of African-American voters in South LA. Ludlow was still CM during the race. AV owes the tanking of Yawn to the late Miguel Contreras.

Instead of saying the DWP is getting too much of a raise, let's say every one else is getting too small of a raise and try to do something about that?

To 8:10 and 8:26 I agree with you and most the posts, however, I believe the bigger problem here is that AFSCME Librarians and EAA have NOT signed a contracts. Julie Butcher backed Jim Hahn; Bob Aquino and EAA backed AV.

So, if I was Bob Aquino and my members saw IBEW member catch a big raise, then I'd play hardball, ask for parity and not feel the least bit guilty about the fact the other unions don't know how to get a good contract.

The Emplyee Relations Committee can't say they didn't know this was coming at them; they not only knew but they were in on the instructions to the CAO bargainning unit.

IBEW has embarassed the City and they deserve the contract they fought for from the City. Hope Bob is as smart as IBEW - I can use the extra money.

I just love this City!!!! You'd have to pay for this entertainment.

Terms of the contract were discussed with City reps already. You wanna fire somebody start with councilmembers who approved this.
Julie Bitcher's only mad 'cause she cut a bad deal- 347 members should toss her. Same for the other crybabies, wanna better deal? Learn how to negotiate, you don't get do overs. Oh wait, the CA says you do.
Will MAV save the day?
