Sunshine on a Cloudy Day

### UPDATE BELOW ###

OK, probaly more like Sunshine Dump on a sweltering hot day, but that didn't rhyme so well. Tomorrow brings us Sunshine Sell-Outs Part II. For part I, visit here.

The breakdown as we see it:

Reyes: Previously YES, Tomorrow YES
Greuel: Previously ABSENT, Tomorrow NO
Zine: Previously YES, Tomorrow EXCUSED ABSENCE
La Bonge: Previously YES, Tomorrow YES
Weiss: Previously YES, Tomorrow YES
Cardenas: Previously YES, Tomorrow YES
Padilla: Previously NO, Tomorrow NO
Parks: Previously YES, Tomorrow YES
Perry: Previously NO, Tomorrow NO
CD 10: VACANT - No Vote
Rosendahl: Previously YES, Tomorrow YES
Smith: Previously NO, Tomorrow NO
Garcetti: Previously ABSENT, Tomorrow YES
CD 14: VACANT - No Vote
Hahn: Previously NO, Tomorrow NO

Previous Vote: 7-4 Yes - Eight votes are needed to pass
Tomorrows Vote: 7-5 Yes - Still Short

Wild Cards: Zine's Absence, Garcetti's switch to yes (stated no publicly in the past), Greuel's expected but yet to be heard NO vote, and Hahn's continued FU to the Mayor.

For another opinion, try here.

We'll all see tomorrow

### UPDATE###

With the votes not there, a delay has been reached. Zine won't be there. Garcetti was still on the fence. Greuel confirmed her no, and Hahn continued to fly the bird.

The agreement - Delay it another 6 months to study even more alternatives. Nothing quite like business as usual...

Tell me, what is the big deal with this subject. Is a Yes better for the environment or a NO?

Yes, educate me please, I am lost on the Sunshine subject. I appreciate brief and to the point comments.

Sunshine Canyon has been a big deal for years, mainly to the residents who live nearby and who have to deal with dirty diapers and other trash floating down their streets. Its also emeshed in local politicals with the flow of contributions and lobbyists always in full force. Hal Bernson milked this for years.

How much would you pay to have lunch with Fabian Nunez or Gary South?

"The Stonewall Club, which backs gay and lesbian causes, raised $20,000 through its live and silent auctions with more than 100 items, Spingarn said"

"Besides the lunch with South, the live auction featured one with Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez - an interesting offering since the two clashed last year and Núñez challenged South's Democratic credentials. Núñez went for $550 less than South.

"There's no logical explanation for it, although Garry (is known to) give a year's worth of advice in an hour," said Núñez spokesman Steve Maviglio."

Why would anyone FU our beloved new mayor -- he's like a god (and if Janice's is an FU, then explain "I'm on your bandwagon, AV" Padilla as a "no!" What about Perry, Smith? How come nearly half the council is telling AV where to stick it (just when he wanted to have one big happy "team"), or ditching the vote entirely?

Can't this impotent new hire even ride his OWN coattails. . . during his HONEYMOON period???

A Yes vote means the City extends the contract with BFI to dump its trash at Sunshine Canyon Landfill. Saves us money over 5 years so some say. Residents don't want an extension

A No vote means the City terminates its contract with BFI to dump trash at Sunshine. The city can still dump trash at Sunshine but its going to cost a lot more money and the residents will be pretty pissed too. Not environmentally friendly but symbolic for the Granada Hills residents who live nearby but trash is still dumped there; not to the extend with the city's trash, but still there.

So what is the best option...? Unless LA residents are ready to pony up some extra money to dump trash elsewhere or were able to get businesses and apartments to recycle before the contract expires next June, then we may be dumping in your backyard

August 08, 2005 8:20 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Garcetti can vote yes or no because most of his constituents have businesses and live in apartments. Most if not all of their trash goes to Sunshine anyways and will even if the contract isn't renewed. It doesn't matter which way he goes as far as his constiuents are concerned. Of course for someone who is a left leaning environmentalist it looks bad, but i am sure he is thinking economics for the next five years while working with Smith and others on alternative after 2010.

I am sure Villaraigosa is working the Council as we speak before tomorrow's vote. Whether he fails to get the eight vote or not, the residents in Granada Hills don't trust him anymore. They have good reason to since he promised not to renew the contract, but even if he did he should have asked for a shorter contract and more incentives rather than let BFI take charge on the 3rd and 4th floor.

The Council from four years ago could have done more on this rather than let is languish till the City "had no other choice but to renew the contract" Let's see what these folks do tomorrow.

The way Council Rule 53 works allows any item, contract, ordinance etc can be brought back for reconsideration on the following council agenda if it does not get the majority or votes required.
This is an issue here because they are basing this on the 15-member council and not on the 13 we have now.
By this reasoning they will continue to bring back the contract issue until they get the eight votes needed.
Where is the democracy?
Anyone have something fail or pass since the council has only had the 13 seats?
Why do we even bother to have elections if those we elect do not even try to keep their promises?
I think its time to follow the money and keep track for the next time.

While many of your posts were amusing, and I'm not in a real happy kind of mood, I had to say a couple of things.

From the "ANTONIO STAFFER" who called us white trash and called the dump "unoccupied" to the person who says we have dirty diapers floating down our streets-I guess I'll go to sleep now amused rather than disgusted. I will admit I've never seen a dirty diaper floating down my street. But I've seen more than anyone here would want to see.

I'm not going to discuss the votes to renew the contracts or not because it's late, but the rumor I hear is that BFI is going to extend the contract time again.

So instead of the vote being whether or not to renew the contract, the motion that will go forward is for the council to extend the time limit again.

First, BFI threatened us with that 'now or we raise the rates' extortion letter 2 years ago, then the June 30th contract got extended to July 19, then put off a day until July 20th, where the Sunshine issue took 2 hours in Council, then they delayed it until August 5th, then they put it off until tomorrow, the 9th and now they will offer another extension tomorrow.

I guess BFI will be allowed to keep bringing it before City Council until they get the "right" vote.

Of course there is more to this story than anyone can possibly fathom.

Tomorrow I will come to this blog after council and briefly explain my version of the story. I'll tell you what the alternatives are, explain the cost issue, whether or not the residents are getting a sweet deal or getting screwed, the political part...... and I'm sure if there is a 3rd or 4th floor staffer or elected, they will anonymously log on and correct me if I'm wrong.

Or verify if I'm right..

Of course, I don't think I need to state that I don't believe that the "ANTONIO STAFFER" was legit.

And to Chief Parker, you stated that it would be a win-win situation for the residents but I'm confused as to the 6 month contract renewal that makes it win-win for us.

Since the contract expires NEXT June 30th, are you saying that the council is voting tomorrow to extend the contract from July 1, 2006 to January, 1 2007?

Or are you just saying that BFI is breaking down (because they NEED our business so badly) and oh so generously allowing us the extra 6 months to find the alternative?

I need clarification. I'll read it tomorrow.

And for the record, none of you are my neighbors, I can tell. But I do appreciate the support from those of you who seem to support the community!

It's the right thing to do.

You guys really need to keep your eye on the ball and forget Antonio making bush league plays. He's a major-leaguer.

With some time, he'll create concessions that will see BFI paying for studies on how to alternatively handle the garbage with sewage/garbage treatment plants, reduced fees and other concessions, such as serial options or the like.

The man has proven, time and again, that he can take lemons and make lemonade.

That's why he is the Mayor, and Jimmy, Tony, Janice, Bob, and Nick are not.

Phil, we're not as dumb as you seem to be. Antonio can't do anything and has proven that time and time again with his lackluster record as councilman. He was a do nothing. He touted wanting control of LAUSD then like a crybaby backed down. He's been saying for months he would hire more police and yet Nothing. He didn't want to get involved in the DWP pay hike debacle and with a stroke of genius the previous commissioners threw it right back in his lap. So you're analogy of lemons into lemonade should be more like dirt into MUD.

Win Win for all? Are you kidding me? Damn, all I see is Villaraigosa screwing the Valley like he did in the Northeast Los Angeles. Villaraigosa used his behind the scenes manipulatio to undermine the consensus of the council. Villaraigosa was going to be beat and he did not want that scenario played out, discussed, exposed in the media. I guess he is a sore loser. How could Villaraigosa do this to his constituents in the Valley, this sucks. Now, the Valley will see what Villaraigosa is really all about. No one won, the valley lost an admirable fight, but as a wannabe dictator Villaraigosa used his bully tactics and avoided the democratic way of decision making, he interfered with the process big time.

Kim, you predicted a similiar situation, although I was not sure AV was going to be fully responsible for this undermining of constituents. What an abuse of hard work by Valley residents, he cut them out of the process and regardless of how the constituents feel, I do not like this type of politics. Maybe we can get some Los Angeles residents and Valley residents to protest this abuse, heck, I'm willing to organize, just let us know publicly.

"No more dumping in Granada Hills landfill

LOS ANGELES -- The City Council fell a vote short of approving a contract extension to dump 3,600 tons of trash a day at a Granada Hills landfill.

With two members absent, the council voted 7-4 Friday to grant a five-year contract extension to Browning-Ferris Industries for use of the Sunshine Canyon Landfill. Eight votes were needed for the extension to pass. Another vote was scheduled for Tuesday.

Browning-Ferris Industries gave the city until Aug. 19 to renew the contract, which expires next June.

It was the first City Council defeat for new Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who argued in a letter to council members that the city had no alternative and would still have to send trash to Sunshine without a contract at an additional cost of up to $17 million a year.

Councilman Greig Smith, whose district includes a portion of the dump, opposed the contract extension.

"For far too long, the residents of Granada Hills have endured the unfair burden of being the dumping grounds for the entire city," Smith said.

Smith said he hoped that if the city did not grant the extension, it would be forced to expand recycling, build waste-to-energy plants and find dumping locations away from residential neighborhoods."
