Tuesday's Brief

  • News tidbits for the blogger on the run

Today's Los Angeles Times leads with the Raul Pena story and quotes Mayor Villaraigosa appropiately waiting for the facts to come in before making a conclusion on the matter.

Rumors are circulating heavily regarding Councilman Eric Garcetti's entry into the state assembly race (after losing his council presidency bid his juice may be waning).

I predict fireworks at today's City Ethics Commission (can't quite leak why yet).

Council President Padilla is campaigning for Senate District seat 20 locking up money and endorsements all under the radar screen.

Somewhere in the dark hidden depths of City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo's upper echelon of staffers exist a memo (they will deny) that scripts out Rocky's entire political career all the way to the Oval Office.

Pacheco consultant Eric Hacopian was behind the latest PR attempt to align Pacheco with Villaraigosa *** dirty little secret is that their name ID poll has some interesting tidbits about Villaraigosa and his influence over CD 14 voters. Hence the (laughable) recent head fake.

Everyone has also missed yesterday's LA Times story on the Port cutting pollution by expanding its business hours later in the night and on weekends. Good news hopefully.

Not sure if it's been pointed out yet, but the Villaraigosa blog has finally ended it's long and fruitful run. We here at Sister City will miss you.

Lastly, I leave you with a little thing i like to call "Who's hot and Who's not."

    Hot
    1. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa -- Everything he does gets media coverage (even when he sneezes) this is the way media in LA should be, but let's see how long the coverage lasts. I am sure Joe and Janelle would prefer one less call so they can set up their voicemail.
    2. Councilwoman Wendy Greuel -- The most effective Valley Councilwoman continues to wow local city hall watchers with her grasp for mundane policy matters and smart political instincts.
    3. City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo -- Regardless if he's running for prez, he raised over $1 million dollars in his bid to become California's Attorney General --- Jerry Brown has over $2 million but it took him a whole year to raise it, Rocky got his in 10 weeks, very impressive.
    4. Speaker Fabian Nunez -- Seems as though this little speaker could, get what he wants. A Speaker who many pundits predicted would be defined only by the Governor has shown that his team of Communication experts are playing major league baseball right now and could get top dollar anywhere in the nation. The real kudos go to Steve Maviglio and Gabe Sanchez.
    5. Councilman Bill Rosendahl -- He much in a Villaraigosa type fashion has been everywhere recently -- attending any and all functions his district can offer -- of course this can only be made possible by the very impressive staff he has hired.

    NOT
    1. Nick Pacheco -- In an e-mail that was laughed at more than taken seriously Nick's campaign proved that just because you are born with a brown nose, you can easily get it browner with a little butt kissing to the new mayor.
    2. Roy Romer -- So your 8-team press operation were completely busy doing other things and unable to help SELL THE DISTRICT THEY WORK FOR so you fundraise to get some good PR. Here is some free PR from the Chief -- If you as a Government entity must FUNDRAISE to get PR (especially if you already have an office to do your PR) that is NEVER,EVER good PR.
    3. Governor Schwarzenegger-- Yes you signed a budget, but now what? Your internal media memos had you beating up Sacramento special interest until late July when your media team thought you'd have a budget signed. 18 days and no media strategy, what is a Governor to do?
    4. Jim Hahn -- Not really wanting to pile it on, but it has to be hard to read news clips every morning with Ethics pledges being signed and PR execs pleading guilty.
    5. LA Weekly -- The early Antonio bashing may seem like fun for your paper to do, but in actuality, the more you bash the more centrist you make Antonio look. I was just wondering if you guys knew you were doing him a favor.

Perhaps one of the better postings i've seen on this site in a while. I predict this posting will receive more comments than usual for a tuesday -- probably because its the Chief writing it - who is far and away the most in-the-know blogger and most controversial LA has.

I give Antonio a lot of credit for coming out strong yesterday and supporting LAPD. He immediately set the tone and I can't remember when that's been done this early on. Good for him!

Pacheco is taking the high road and you're trying to make a negative into the issue. He has grass root support. Little Jose is way over his head with all this crap going on at LAUSD.

Rocky has done a lot for the city. I don't think he'll have any trouble running for AG.

Greuel?? have you heard what is going on in valley village?? one of her deputies is "ensorcelled" by a certain council member (fyi TMI) and went along with a plan to make second stories or any additions illegal.

Last thurs, all of valley village came out to oppose it wiping off that dumb grin of hers.

also, wendy is very effective in increasing the number of strip clubs next to schools, witness the vip club (aka handwork for 80 club) right next to a school - way to go wendy!!

He is lucky in that he drew only one seriously wounded former councilmember in his race for CD 14.

Romer should fire his incompetent 8 person PR Team including that creepy, shrill matron Stephanie Brady. Hire people who know what they're doing and he won't have to try to do their work for them and in the process end up with two black eyes.

If Garcetti's juice has waned, that's news to the outside world where voters live (and the mayor's office, where AV and EG have formed a mutual admiration society). The last citywide poll I saw (January 2005) had Bratton highest, then AV, then Baca, then Garcetti, with Chick, unsurprisingly, quite low with name i.d., Padilla also not registering much, and Delgadillo quite positive, but less known than AV, Bratton and Baca. Padilla and Garcetti are still friends from what my source inside Padilla's office says.

The dumbest thing Wendy will ever do is to kiss ass to Tony Lucente and have the city buy the Studio City Golf and Tennis Club when the owner is willing to donate practically all of it to the city. Dumb ass move Wendy. Fuck Lucente and his village idiots. If you could halfway figure out how to connect with some of the Latinos in your district, you wouldn't need to kowtow to the aging wannabe starlets and dog worshiping granola eaters of Studio City. How people that dumb make money is beyond me.

COLDEST OF ALL???

(never WAS hot)

CHIEF PARKER, who's collected "list" of the 80 neighborhood watches Villaraigosa earned $300,000 from the city to start (as his ONLY accmplishment in TWO YEARS) has NEVER materialized despite repeated promises during the mayoral campaign.

Learned how to lie and break promises from your hero, ADV?!

LA Weekly will be vindicated when the city gets tired mayoral governing by serial press conference.

Ace and Parke aren't there to craft Tony's spoon-fed crap any more... ADV's temp will be cooling faster than anyone's.

Huizar, hot?

He's been LAUSD board president for years, has had most of CD14 in his district for FOUR years, and can get out the the TEENS in name recognition when he's starting his second full term.

Now THAT's a joke. Where were his advisors when he made this stupid move???

There ar DEAD councilmembers and FORMER school board members who have better name recognition than this lightweight. If he thinks he's going to 4X his identification in a low profile race like this, he's loopy, as well as sleazy

Garcetti jumping shifts the dynamics entirely.

Chavez can't get past her small UFW list of donors and won't have the money to pay Ross for his consulting. If he decides to give it for free, FPPC should look into an in-kind contribution that will put her over the top in funding limits.

Kevin has 400K+ and will raise whatever he needs, best friend Nunez will ensure that. Let me put it this way, say your a lobbiest, do you answer Eric's call or Nunez' call first? Eric will be able to raise funds in the D.O. but Sacramento is closed.

I started off by saying that if Eric jumped in, it would change the dynamics of this race - it's going to cost a whole hell of a lot more to get the same outcome - Kevin wins.

The only way Eric gets to the run-off is to run as an Independent or a Green. He might as well given his background.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot - Elena Popp. She's a great gal, but we need something more than your sapphic credentials to get our support. Your campaigns message that we need more homosexuals in the legislature just doesn't cut it. I think we need more legislators that are proactive on LGBT issues than legistors that are LGBT.

lots of carpetbagging going on in AD45. are voters that easily purchased? or will they be turned off by the way that various "powerbrokers" seem to think that the District is up for sale to the highest bidder? maybe just maybe voters will want to elect someone who has actually been living and working in that community for more than a year? just a thought.

based on the reaction to AV's election, i would say that people do like the idea that our elected officials are more than just hacks. people love to feel some type of connection to their elected leaders.

Who isn't carpet bagging should be the question.

Kevin moved to Angeles Heights about 6 months ago from San Francisco.

Christine moved to City Terrace about 12 months from Pasadena.

Elena moved in from her house on Romulus Dr. only about a couple of months ago.

Chris and Eric are the only long time residents and they don't stand much of chance.

The Speaker will bring down all of SOMS to play in this race. Let me be the first to warn all you other AD candidates to whom the Speaker has called his #1 priority - it's not true. He will pull all resources into this race if he sees Kevin in trouble.

I don't disagree. I'm just saying that candidates now a day have to have huge egos to use as personal shields against all the hate and envy that will be directed at them.

Do you really think Hahn personally hurt all those people that hate him? He may have made bad decisions that affected all of us. But he didn't come to my door and spit on my face, like some of the posters’ rhetoric conveys.

It takes a very unique person to run. I'm just saying that maybe we shouldn't be so quick to hate.

I personally think Pacheco is a nice guy - wouldn't invite him to my wedding- but he's a nice guy. I also will not start talking about his Mom or MELASI or anything else like that. He has made enough mistakes for me to pick at.

Fabian and Garcetti (who would kick anyone's ass if he got it--trust me, I saw his numbers a year and a half ago as well in a poll UTLA did and he would win) will work this one out, in my opinion.

They are natural allies, though Garcetti messed up not endorsing him, Fabian and he can do a lot to help one another. Maybe Fabian supports him for Jack Scott's Senate seat when Garcetti terms out.

And I agree. All of those in the "know", name id, incumency, and residency trumps everything (in the face of others only having one out of three), despite your amateur opinion. I've been at this game too long to say otherwise.

Mr. Padilla wants to run for everything from mayor to state board of equalization to U.S. Senate. Is he still tied to his mentor Acevedo? I think that dude owes the taxpayer some serious dough via the CRA, Mr. Padilla should pay off that debt with his warchest.
