Hey Padilla, Give Me The Remote!

Boi from Troy reports that the City Council has approved a motion by Greig "Always Low Prices. Always." Smith that would allow residents to address the City Council and testify at hearings via a video conference link available at Van Nuys City Hall and San Pedro City Hall. The purpose of this is to make government more accessible and avoid the Downtown trip for residents from the City's far flung corners.

While Mayor Sam is all for more access to government, and high tech solutions, I doubt this will have much impact.

"It's impractical for us to sit there like students in a classroom paying attention to the professor."
Councilman Dennis Zine
As it is, when citizens do make the effort to travel Downtown and address the City Council in person, they are often ignored as Council members eat, talk on their cell phones, work with aides, read the paper or just zone out. We've talked about that before. You remember that the Council was even ordered to pay attention by a judge. To which, one of our favorite Councilmen, Dennis Zine, replied "It's impractical for us to sit there like students in a classroom paying attention to the professor."

And there's the rub. If Council Members won't give time of day to those who actually make the trek to Spring Street, who really believes they're going to watch this folks on TV, and not actually change the channel over Regis & Kelly?

Zine is a joke. He's an example of why the system doesn't work. He doesn't give a shit about listening to constituents, he's large and in charge.

What a bunch of lame ass losers we have on council. They can't even get their butts into chambers on time. They don't pay attention and too many times citizens speaking at PUBLIC COMMENT always have to yell at them to pay attention. If LAMEBOY PADILLA WAS ANY TYPE OF LEADER he would straighten them out. Padilla is just as bad as they are. They embarrass LA around the nation when that citizen sued them last year for not paying attention. SOMEONE SHOULD SUE THEM AGAIN AND TAKE A VIDEO CAMERA.

Zine is a total loser. What has he done since being on council? He flip flopped on the mayoral race. He was so slimy that when Hahn was at an event there was Zine giving the thumbs up. Then when Hahn left and Antonio arrived there was Zine giving the thumbs up and telling people he was the next mayor even though Zine endorsed Hahn. Total loser idiot!!! He's lost tons of support from the rank and file and the police union for being such a joke!!

Zine was right on in regards to a number of public safety issues before he got on the council, then once elected flip flopped and sold out.

This is a good idea, but like the other bloggers said it doesn't matter if they do video conference if they don't listen.

What happened to the plan of moving the council meeting around the city once a month? They used to do that back in Ferraro's days.

Don't worry about Zine not watching, he's off on a junket to Lebanon.

10 of us from Wilmington and San Pedro went to City hall last week to comment on the Amerigas lease, which Mayor Frank has referenced several times.

It is a 1 hour trip each way by the time you get parked and into the Council room. We then waited until 11:30 when the agenda item came up.

We were then granted 10 minutes to share among the 10 people. After forcefully explaining to Councilwoman Hahn (as if she didn't know) that we had traveled 1 hour and waited 1 1/2 hours, the Council granted us another 5 minutes.

Spending 1/2 day to comment for 1.5 minutes on an issue of critical importance to the community is a pretty frustrating use of time. Stuff like this is what led to the seccession movement in the first place.

Your point on whether they will actually watch a closed circuit telecast is well taken. Can it be made two way, so that the people in San Pedro or the Valley can see if they are paying attention? That would seem to be absolutely necessary if the thing is to have any credibility.

On the other had, they did all sit in their seats and appear to listen, which is an improvement over past experience.

But at least on the CCTV, you won't see the Council's disdain for having to appear to be listening to people!

When is Zine getting his own Ch 35 show like Ruth Galanter or Eric?

Zine already has his own show in Time Warner in the West Valley.
