Now that we've inaugurated a new Mayor, it looks like Election 2006 is already underway.
Just last Friday, we swore in City Attorney Rockard J. Delgadillo for his second and final term. However, before the last inka-dot was even dry on the votes Rocky got in the city election, he was already planning his next step - running for Attorney General of the State of California. Indeed, he was well underway in his goal of raising $1 million for the statewide race, a goal he achieved just the other day.
Delgadillo is a rising star in the Democratic party and was the first Latino elected to a citywide post in Los Angeles in over 100 years. He grew up in Highland Park, went to Harvard, and even played in the NFL for a while. Many feel that Rocky is part of a new generation of Latino politcians that will achieve even greater power than any of their forebearers.
Before becoming Attorney General however, Rocky has to first get the Democratic nomination and there he faces a controversial but formidable opponent - former California Governor and current Mayor of Oakland, Jerry Brown. Brown for sure has his detractors from his days as "Governor Moonbeam" and fighting Howard Jarvis. But that was a long time ago and Brown has acclompished much as Oakland's Mayor. He still espouses many of his liberal, new age philosophies, but at the same time his experience in Oakland has made him a tough as nails crimefighter.
Others running for the spot include Republians Rod Pacheco and Chuck Poochigian. Most pundits are saying its Brown's race to lose.
Rocky is not known well outside of Los Angeles and the fact that he filed for the office only eight days after winning re-election as City Attorney may not sit well with LA voters. To top it off, looming for Rocky is a potentially embarrassing and messy lawsuit in which a former Assistant City Attorney accuses Delgadillo of allowing top deputies to rig an investigation of a hostile work environment claim within the City Attorney's office.
By the way, even though Rocky already has raised a cool million, we hear the fundraisers continue. The Latino Professionals Network reports that a cocktail reception fundraiser for Rocky, sponsored by various local attorneys, will be held at LA's Jonathan Club on July 13th. Minimum entry is $250 a pop.

Rocky must have been sick to the stomack by Laura Cheek's sleek move to have Jerry Brown administer her oath of office just mere seconds before he took on the stage.
In addition to the lawsuit, another embarassing episode for Rocky is going to be an audit the State is conducting on Rocky's skyrocketing outside legal services cost; it appears that Rocky and his boys at the Propritery departments have, in the last couple of years, been looking for any kind of reason to hire outside firms
Rocky is really smart and a doer unlike some other Latino politicans. He has a great record of accomplishments here in LA. With voters upset with all the gang violence in the city Rocky has made headway with all his gang injunctions.
Laura Chick is an idiot. Its all about her and wanting to be in front of the cameras. She's as sleazy as they come. Read LA Weekly article about her.
You can say what you want about Chick, but her public image is strong.
As for Rocky, I think he's a rising star. I'm just afraid he's shooting too high too quickly. Brown is a tremendous fundraiser, was head of the CA Democratic Party (where he raised them the most ever of any State Dem leader) and is a household name. Democrats love him.
Seems Rocky is making a career mistake going against him.

Rocky became City Attorney on AV's coatails. AV invigorated the Latino vote in 2001 and Rocky (yes, 1/2 mexican and can't speak spanish) benefited.
Rocky also tries to convince people he was an intellectual property attorney at O'Melvny.....what a joke, he spent all his time at rebuild LA.

Rocky is as corrupt as it gets. That guy is going to get smoked in the primary for AG. Look at all those outside contracts to law firms. Who do you think is contributing to his campaign? People in the CA office hate him. Look at how many of them are quitting.
Rocky is smart, honest and has done a wonderful job in making the City Attorney's Office one of the finest and most respected in the state.
Yes, he had created controversy in his office by forcing those whose lazy asses did the typical civil service type of work to work as though they really cared.
But Rocky also did the following, among other things:
1. Converted the office to all digital phones from outdated and non functioning rotary phones.
2. Pushed the Neighborhood Prosecutors to new high levels and dealt with crimes that impact each separate community.
3. Forced City Attorneys to dress and act appropriately in courts.
4. Met with all judges to hear their criticism of Hahn's old office and attempt to remediate any such perceived incompetencies or inappropriateness.
5. Provided all City Attorneys with either phones or pagers so they could be communicated with when in court or otherwise out of the office.
6. Provided a single data base for Opinion Letters of City Attorney representatives so that electeds and others couldn't in a sneaky manner get conflicting City Attorney opinions from different City Attorneys.
6. Conmputerized the office.
...and much much more. Brown is old, from the old 'family name elects me' syndrome......but it is a new world and everyone who cares about this state will give Rocky an objective look see and most likely will vote for Rocky for proven change and leadership.
Rocky has cleaned up this city with his gang injunctions, going after slumlords, saving LA over $55 million thanks to Parks cover up of Rampart and all the lawsuits, and not that long ago settled with Fleishman Hillard, knocking down crack houses, going after business owners who don't fix those toxic odors.
He's smart, charasmatic, and knows how to speak to a crowd with passion.

I like Rocky too and plan to vote for him. The things that he has done for the office show just how bad Hahn was as City Attorney (I guess that's why he got a promotion and an opportunity to wreak havoc over Los Angeles for 4 years). I don't like Jerry Brown. I don't like what he did with his hippie governing style in the 70's or his new arch Republican, Bush loving Oakland mayor governance style. In 2001, I felt that Delgadillo was kind of snuck into office because of Antonio's coattails and that disappointed me. I would think that Jerry Brown is the favorite to win this race and if he makes it through the primary, I'll of course vote for him in the 2006 general election. But my feeling is Brown is old, he's already been in government, it's time to have someone new and smart take the helm.

So I see Jerry taking the bay area and Rocky taking LA. That leaves the Central Valley and San Diego up for grabs.
Parra and Florez will probably go with Rocky because there would be hell to pay for them if they went with Moonbeam. And so will all the farmers and water buffalos that remember being hit during Jerry’s tenure in office. So there goes another 100-150K votes. In San Diego, Rocky again has it, as this Navy town is not going to vote for closest Green party candidate out there. They’ll support a former football player pro-law enforcement tough guy any day of the week. Rocky wins this race!
Jerry's only hope is to have Westly, Anglides, Lockyer, and Garmendi (all N. California candidates) spend all there $$$ in the SF DMA over LA market and hope that they can turnout his base for him.

Statewide campaigns are completely different than local campaigns. They talk about market share and media points like locals talk about "coffees" and precinct walks. It's all about TV and creating media opportunities. This gives Rocky the advantage because of the large coverage the LA media market has. Any press conference he has will be played all the way to OC and San Diego because they also get LA local channels. When was the last time you heard of any press conference Jerry had in Oakland?
If and when AV hires new police officers - Rocky will be there. Every single crack house that gets demolished - Rocky will be there. Cracking down on port polluters, illegal worker smuggling, and sweatshops -- all guaranteed “earned” media opportunities that will be covered by the entire region.

I can't believe this is even being debated. Jerry Brown enjoys more name id than almost any living California Dem politician (save maybe Feinstein). Rocky has no shot. He's only running to raise his own profile for another try later on.
Jerry has raised a lot of money already and will raise just as much if not more than Rocky.
But Jerry will get a TON of free media as he is, well, Jerry. Its going to be a big story that "Governor Moonbeam" is back. He will get asked onto the Tonight Show, Letterman and more. And he will get donations from all over the country.
Name ID does NOT equal public support. Just ask Gary Condit, Gray Davis, John Van de Kamp, Michael Jackson or Mayor Sam.

I will grant you this, Rocky will have to raise more money then Jerry to get his name ID up there - but I also don't see that as a problem for Mr. Harvard.

Because it will show that millions of taxpayer dollars have been given to law firms who then contribute to Rocky's campaign. Rocky will be toast.

If there are pay-for-play shenanigans in Rocky’s administration, than they should come to light. But I am sure that when we look at Mr. Moonbeams current tenure, we will also see that there is long list of contributors that have suckled on the public teat. Jerry is old-school. You don't survive in politics, this long, without having a lot of friend$ who on occa$$ion need help with a contract or their name pushed to the top of the bid list.
In terms of where his surname is derived from, does it really matter? Going after Latino voters is a must for him, getting Italian voters is an added bonus. A vote is a vote, and I take'em any way they come.
Cruz lost because he had Ross advising him and running parts of the anti-recall campaign. Cruz should have gotten a hint of Ross’s prioritizes when Ross decided to tape three different commercials at the same event – a UFW rally – in order to be able to pocket more money. They would have all cost the same regardless of venue. He screwed up the first real opportunity to get a minority elected to Governor. He was running three contradicting campaigns at the same time. Did he really expect to win all of them?

I'm a democrat who's not been happy with the Democratic party as of late. Whatever the hell he is...Rocky is no different than the type of political crooks we've been witnessing throughout the past ten years. All of them pandering to various industries...and the numerous lobbiests representing them. He has ignored the corruption of the Mayor's office during his term despite numerous complaints. His hiring of outside legal firms to represent the "guilty parties" associated with Hahn only illustrates his compliance with Hahn to "cover up" illegal activity. And so....exactly WHAT has been "cleaned up?" The nickel and dime operations of local thugs that are segregated into the poorer neighborhoods? The larger corporate crimes have gone uninvestigated and unprosecuted. Those crimes continue to undermine the City of LA at it's core, and make a joke of the LA City Ethics Commission. That is a toothless....useless department that only wastes taxpayer money at the directive of our illustrious City Attorney, Mr. Delgadillo. As far as I'm concerned....given our choices for Attorney General.....we are doomed. We need a real hero....and we only have political wanna bees....who just want to continue to be...in whatever capacity affords them that opportunity. No real goals or incentives to change things for the better. How sad.
