Police Commissioner
Police Commission President Resigns
By ART MARROQUIN -- City News Service
LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Police Commission President David S. Cunningham III, an appointee of former Mayor Jim Hahn, announced today he is resigning from the
panel.
Cunningham, a redevelopment and land use attorney, is the second police commissioner to step aside in recent weeks. Commissioner Rick Caruso, also a Hahn appointee, announced his resignation June 24, saying he wanted to dedicate more time to his development company, Caruso Affiliated.
Cunningham said he is stepping aside so he can focus on his new position as co-chair of the President's Commission on Los Angeles Unified School District Governance, according to Richard Tefank, executive director of the Police Commission.
Councilman Alex Padilla appointed Cunningham to the LAUSD panel.
Cunningham, who was appointed to the Police Commission four years ago, will step down when his term expires at the end of the month, Tefank said.
``With my fellow police commissioners, it has been my privilege to help steer L.A.'s finest in the direction of improved public service and reform,'' Cunningham, who has been the panel's president for the past two years,
wrote in a resignation letter to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. ``Under your guidance,it is my deepest wish that the Los Angeles Police Department continue to grow in stature and size.''
Police Chief William Bratton said he will miss Cunningham's presence on the commission.
``David, I think had some difficult decisions to make during his tenure,'' Bratton said. ``I'm a result of one of those decisions. I consider him a close personal friend. I shall miss him and I wish him well.''
Villaraigosa was not immediately available for comment. Bratton said the changes on the panel are not surprising. ``I'm sure we will have a new commission to work with,'' Bratton said."Mr. Villaraigosa has said quite clearly that he intends to make some changes in his commissions.''
RUMOR - recall this was second hand, but is rumored to be hitting tomorrow - Apparently this morning, after the press conference Howard Dean, Bob Shrum, and Nancy Pelosi had a conference call with "MAV" as you call him. The topic was a POSSIBLE run by MAV for the Presidency of the United States in 2008. Apparently fundrasing has begun and an exploratory committee is already in formation.
David Cunninham III was a great police commissioner. He is a big supporter of the rank and file and will be missed. He's a smart attorney and many of us wish him well.
please give me a break - mav as our next president?
That's just someone stirrin' the pot.
Maybe the people of LA were dumb enough to forget about Antonio's police record, affairs, no record as councilman but in the national spotlight all will be highlighted. He will get chewed up and spitted on. He better watch it!!!
