Paper-pulling galore for Los Angeles City Council and LAUSD Elections

"Who's who of candidates for Los Angeles City Council and LAUSD."
Candidates, you may pull your papers now, ............. and many have as of Friday.
The City Clerk of Los Angeles has the latest list of potential candidates for the upcoming City Council and LAUSD Elections in March of 2011. We offer below, brief comments on the notable candidates and potential match ups. Lets keep in mind that all the candidates listed here, have to meet the requirements and are not certify candidates for the March, 2011 Elections, until noted by the City Clerks Office.
** The LA Daily News Rick Orlov has this "Valleycentric Report".
City Council District Two:
Augusto Bustani and Michael McCue are back again in the forlorn hope, better yet, hopeless attempt to unseat the popular Paul Krekorian.
City Council District Four:
Who will the Gatto Truthers target in ensuring that Tom LaBonge gets four more years to perfect the art of buffoonery within the Horseshoe? Stephen Box, Tomas O'Grady or Phil Jennerjahn? BTW, Frank Sheftel just pulled out the "rolling papers" to join this field.
City Council District Six:
James Cordaro makes this race interesting.
City Council District Eight:
Who will the LA Wave Newspaper's Betty Pleasant support among this crowd to oust Councilman Bernard Parks? Expect Organize Labor to pony up some cash in this race to oust the fiscal-conservative Parks.
City Council District Ten:
Former Mayor Sam Contributor Althea Shaw has pull papers to challenge Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's buddy Councilman Herb Wesson. Austin Dragon merits consideration and attention in this race.
City Council District Twelve:
Mucho-galore great Neighborhood Council advocates here to challenge Mitch Englander's monetary machine. The question here should be whether $400,000+ will keep Mitch from being forced into a runoff in May? Constituents of CD 12 deserve multiple candidates forums with this talented field.
City Council District Fourteen:
Its Rudy vs. Huizzy in terms of early money but don't ignore Tony Butka.
LAUSD District One:
Marquerite LaMotte is UTLA's best friend on the current board. Will be interesting to see who UTLA support in addition to LaMotte in this election cycle.
LAUSD District Three:
Its Tamar Galatzan against Louis Pugliese, The question here is who will have the most monetary resources this time around? Rumor is that UTLA is going to support Pugliese. Will Tamar want to have the Mayor's support in 2011?
LAUSD District Five:
The current group of potential candidates make this race one to watch as the likes of Scott Folsom, Bennett Kayser and Gabriel Buelna, seek to prevent Mayor Antonio Viallaraigosa and CD 14 Councilman Jose Huizar's crony Luis Sanchez from becoming LAUSD School Board President Monica Garcia's "mini-me" on the board.
LAUSD District Seven:
Its Jesus Escandon taking on Dr. Richard "Dr. Death" Vladovic again in 2011. Escandon may be the recipient of some UTLA support in his second attempt at the District Seven Office.
Your thoughts..............
Scott Johnson in CD 14

I wonder if Tamar Galatzan will get the support of her boss, Carmen 'the Clown' Trutanich? After what he's done to ruin Steve Cooley's bid to be AG, Tamar probably isn't too keen on his support for anything.

You can have all the money you think you need but then again it will only take one or two bad publicity hit pieces to kiss it goodbye ala Meg Whitman with her $160 million.

Why would Jamie Cordero's presence in the CD 6 race make it interesting when he didn't make it interesting the last time he ran?

All those candidates in the CD 12 race helps Englander. There will be so little time for anyone to say anything during the candidates' forums that the Daily News will have little to write about, which means that Englander will be able to control the message to the voters using his money. And it's not like there is an incumbent for everyone to run against.

How did Trutanich ruin Steve Cooley's bid to be AG? Steve Cooley may very well win, and what did Trutanich have to do with the campaign either way?

Louis Pugliese lost by a hir in his last attempt. Tamar could get a run for her money in that race.
Also, no way Trutanich will support her. She is a holdover from Delgadillo.

Thanks to Mayor Sam for the coverage; as far as the CD 12 field goes, one might consider:

"...the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happens to them all."

As Gov. Whitman and Sen. Fiorina both know all too well...

Worked last time.
Will work again.

Ms. Robocall Galatzan spent all her LAUSD money in her holdover account on her failed council race. She probably never imagined she would need it now. And there isn't going to be the money to back her this time, with or without Antonio's support. That machine has fallen apart.

6:17pm - Trutanich suckered Cooley into joining the crusade against medical marijuana. That cost Cooley a ton of votes in LA County where Cooley ended up losing to Kamala Harris by around 14 points. Cooley had previously won 3 elections in LA.

Cooley used to be a low key kinda guy who stayed out of the spotlight. Trutanich is the reverse - loves the spotlight and has made a jackass of himself too often over things like the Michael Jackson "criminal aspects" investigation that went nowhere, or the Venice RV dumpers that he ended up giving a slap on the wrist to, instead of sending to jail like he promised.

Cooley paid the price of being too close to Trutanich, who is called Carmen the Clown around the office.

Also, 6:35pm, Trutanich will back Tamar. She may be a holdover from Rocky's days, but she's also very popular in the community and he needs her to support him. That's why she's one of the few Neighborhood Prosecutors that he didn't shut down as reported in the Daily News last week.

How about CD1? The one district no one cares about.

All illegal aliens and a third world country, that is what CD1 really is. They only elect one of their own and that would be ok if that person actually had a brain.

CD12 does deserve forums... but does anyone really think Mitch will participate in them?

Brad Smith campaign on here all the time, but outside of Granada Hills does anyone know who Brad is?

Mitch has been campaigning for this job since 2002. He has built a a database of organizations and people indebted to him from across the district.

He has rewritten the campaign model.

So far, no one with as a wide a name recognition as Mitch has come forward.

And with $400K in the bank, the Englander machine behind him, a litany of elected officials and unions that won't dare cross him (and his uncle), who is really going to be the David against this Goliath.

Stephen Box has a better chance of knocking off an incumbent than anyone has a chance of knocking off Mitch.

WRONG! in CD14, a primarily Hispanic district, DO IGNORE cranky-old-white-guy Tony Butka.

His record of running the most derided and hated NC on the Eastside - the laughable Glassell Pork Neighborhood Council - makes him a TOTAL joke in this race.

"Hey, all you kids get off my lawn (sign)!" . . . should be his campaign slogan.

The Dist. 5 LAUSD race has brought out the biggest batch of loser, wannabes seen in a local race in a long time. This will be a marathon, shooting ones self in the foot session. Most of the candidates are already 3- or 4-time losers in this or other seats.

"None of the above" would get more votes than all combined,if that was an option for voters.

Armineh should line up with Kelly Lord or Brad Smith. She would make for a great district director which then would give her connections to run.

Trojan -

The invitation is still open; send me a note and we can meet for coffee anytime you wish. I'll buy the first round.

As far as who knows any of the candidates outside of their hometowns, I expect we will find out in March.

Actually, as far as forums go, the CD 12 candidates who are elected NC members have, and will continue to, jointly ask NCs and other community organizations to sponsor forums on local issues, down to the neighborhoods.

Generally, the NCs have been favorable, and their members have said they plan to ask all the candidates - not just those making the request - to participate because the neighborhoods deserve specifics, not just platitudes.

Specifics about Sunshine Canyon in Granada Hills North, and small lot developments in North Hills West, and lot splits in Granada Hills South, and projects on White Oak in Northridge East, and the loss of open space in Porter Ranch (and why it took decades for a second public school to be built there), and the loss of equestrian zoning in Chatsworth, and the lack of communication that led to the bike lanes on Wilbur in Northridge West, and why CD 12 can't afford to maintain the haz mat unit at Station 87, and five-story apartment buildings at Reseda and Plumber, etc and etc...

There are a lot of questions the voters want to ask about CD 12's record over the past six years; if certain candidates chose not to show up and defend their record, that would speak volumes, would it not?

Heck, I'd like to hear CD 12's defense of their record. I am sure it would be enlightening.

Now, they may very well be doing the best they can - which says a lot, doesn't it?

All the best,

Brad Smith

Time to get rid of candidates who see the council as just a stepping stone to higher office. We need grownups who want to bring some sane budgeting to a city that is on the verge of economic collapse.

One man who is in it to fix things, not just promote himself for higher office is Tony Butka in CD14 - http://butka2011.com/ Rudy and Jose will trade jabs, but Tony will cross the finish line first.

My name is YJ Draiman and I am running for L.A. City Council CD12

Our current economic crisis is the number one concern of every American. It is time we exercise our constitutional right.
It is a government by the people for the people. It makes no difference whether you are a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian or any other political affiliation, and it is time America’s citizens take control of their country starting from the city government to the county, state and the federal government. All elected officials must be accountable to their community and its residents. Our current budget crisis was brought about by the current administration – do you want this to continue and lose city services. I am a soldier in the battle to restore fiscal sanity for our district and our city, improve the economic well being of the district and the welfare of all residents.
Capitalism has not failed. The people in charge of the economy have failed Capitalism!!!!! Capitalism has been hijacked by career politicians, who disguise themselves as representatives of the people.

Enough is enough; we need to replace as many incumbents as possible, business as usual must stop here and now, government treasury should not be the personal piggy bank of the politicians.
We need new representatives in our government, representatives whose allegiance is to the residents of their district, representatives who care about Los Angeles surviving the current economic crisis and becoming better for it.
We must reduce big government - The bigger the government the less efficient it is.
Our energy consumption is growing rapidly; we must produce a hundred percent of our energy needs in our own country.
We have the manpower and technology, let us utilize it.
We must encourage new businesses, create more jobs and stabilize the economy.
Government cannot create jobs. Government should be reduced by at least fifty percent, streamline government, enact laws, rules, regulations and taxation that are friendly to small business. Encourage investment in our economy and workforce.
This economic crisis is a national emergency. People are losing their jobs and homes, and we must establish a mechanism similar to the Manhattan project of World War 2, with an all out genuine national effort to resolve the current economic crisis which threatens to destroy our country.

Brad Smith for L.A. City Council – District 12 - Candidate - 2011

BRAD SMITH, Neighborhood Council Boardmember -
Los Angeles City Council District 12 (CD 12) Candidate - 2011
Have you had enough?
• Enough of downtown bureaucrats and City Hall insiders, who don't live in our community, making decisions that ruin our neighborhoods through over-development and blight?
• Do you want proactive problem solving and attention to the real needs of our neighborhoods and residents?

I was born and raised in CD 12, and I want to see real change — which is why I would like your help.

Council District 12 is at a cross-roads: we must decide whether to protect and maintain single-family residential neighborhoods, or allow unlimited development. The current leadership has given us decades of over-development, traffic, and only paid lip service to residents' concerns. It is time for a change.
The city of Los Angeles is also at a cross-roads: whether we chose to live within our means, and fund only the essential public services while rebuilding our existing infrastructure, or continue to spend taxpayers’ money on special deals for special interests.
We need to make the investments necessary to re-build our manufacturing economy, or we will continue to lose out economically, as good white collar and blue collar jobs flee the city for out of state and overseas. We can restore manufacturing jobs in Los Angeles.
I have worked in the private sector in highly competitive industries my entire professional life; I know what it takes to deliver a project on time or early and on or under budget. City Hall needs to learn how to do the same. I can help make that happen.
Once the Los Angeles City Charter was amended to allow the creation of neighborhood councils, I was eager to volunteer— again, because I knew the powers-that-be in City Hall are not looking out for our interests; they are looking out for their own.
In 2006, I had the great honor of being elected as a founding member of the Granada Hills South Neighborhood Council Board of Directors. I was elected vice-president in 2007, and re-elected to both the board and vice-presidency in 2010.
Since 2006, I have worked with the rest of the council on planning and land-use issues, fighting over-building and overdevelopment, supporting intelligent growth, and assisting our local civic groups and emergency services. I have advocated for the Council's support of beautification efforts throughout the district, notably for the Veteran's Triangle Memorial in Granada Hills, and for support of the Los Angeles Police and Fire departments, parks and libraries, and our local public schools. As parents of four children in LAUSD schools in CD 12, my wife Maria and I want our schools and our city to be working together as partners for safe and effective schools for our children and our community.
Today, the mayor and the City Council are cutting spending on city parks, libraries, and all of the other services that make our community an inviting place to live. They are not, of course, cutting their own office budgets significantly, and few have cut their own salaries significantly.
As lifelong residents of the northwest San Fernando Valley, Maria and I have done our best to try and maintain our neighborhood as the kind of community we grew up in: a safe, and just as important, affordable middle class neighborhood within the city of Los Angeles.
From the neighborhood councils to City Hall, Angelenos need to fight to protect our communities. That is why I am involved, and that is why I would appreciate your vote in 2011 for Los Angeles City Council.
Very respectfully,

Paid for by Brad Smith for City Council

I decided to run for Mayor of Los Angeles. Before I could make that commitment, I needed to free up the time required to do the job right. Therefore, I decided to devote full time to the job of Mayor.
I am motivated by the wish to serve the Los Angeles community and protect our quality of life. I have the skill, experience, long time community involvement and personal commitment to lead the city. I will work hard to preserve residents’ priorities and the city’s coffers, during the difficult financial times ahead. Some of my more specific goals are encouraging economic vitality, preserving and improving the City infrastructure, protecting the quality of our neighborhoods, supporting our open space and bicycle trails programs, working with the Neighborhood Councils and the Chamber to encourage local, innovative green businesses, and proper Urban Planning for Los Angeles, among others.
I previously ran for City Council in District 12.
I decided that to do the job right I must run for Mayor.
I am an Energy/Utility Auditor/Consultant for over 20 years.
I am married to a darling wife, we have two grown children – my oldest son is David Draiman a famous Rock Star with a Band by the name Disturbed, my younger son is a Psychologist doing research.
I am looking forward to being elected and serving the people of the City of Los Angeles.
We must work together as a cohesive force to improve our city.

Jamie Cordero's candidacy is an opportunity for Local District 6 residents to have a voice inside the Los Angeles City Council. "Photo Op" Tony hasn't improved the quality of life in the 8 years he's been in office. Zoning Variances and Negative Declarations are destroying our communities. Illegal vending and dirty streets are polluting our street. Elect Jamie Cordero, and throw out "Photo Op Tony", our communities deserve better. Don't stay home on election day, Vote for Cordero!
