Los Angeles Politics Hotsheet for Wednesday
No-See-Em Any More |
The LA City Council has voted to end the much despised Red Light Camera program on July 31. Councilman Zine is also advising LA residents to ignore any tickets that they may receive if caught on camera blowing through an intersection between now and July 31.. Thanks, Dennis!
Uh-Oh, Empty suit in Cali! Hide your checkbooks!
Union Rescue Mission is shutting down some homeless shelters that are under contract to local and federal agencies due to non-payment or not adequate compensation for services provided. URM is claiming that they are still owed over $300,000 by FEMA for operating four winter shelters in Los Angeles.
URM has also experienced a big drop in donations while experiencing a 100% increase in need for services. Additionally, URM will be facing a $1.3 mil deficit beginning July 1st.
Joseph Mailander AKA Mulholland Terrace AKA The Stay at Home Blogger managed to step deeply into his own blogger poop twice already this week (and it's only Wednesday). His 2 reports on the efforts by the Sunland-Tujunga community to improve and bring some teeth to our Specific Plan were long on innuendo and speculation, but noticeably absent of basic facts. Bizarrely, he calls out the Sunland-Tujunga Alliance (the group I am co-director of) for being quiet on a proposed SB1818 apartment complex:
"The Sunland Tujunga Alliance, once groud zero of the City's anti-density advocacy, has also been unusually quiet about a pending 64-unit inclusionary zoning project on Samoa..."
A couple of problems with Joseph Mailander's statement;
1.The STA has never dealt with housing issues or high density in our entire existence. Our focus has always been upholding the Foothill Blvd Corridor Specific Plan, which regulates commercial properties and retail development.2.There are currently no plans filed with the City for the Samoa Project. It's extremely difficult for anyone to fight against a theoretical apartment building.
Joseph, next time, try to do a little research, get both sides of the story, and maybe actually attend a S-T community meeting instead of writing your story pretending that you were there.
Finally, in case you missed Red Spot's story; Mike Gatto is very, very, upset!

The LA City Council finally did something right!

Wouldn't it be easier to close that loophole that allows those that get a ticket to skip payment vs shutting down the system? The city needs the money, fewer pedestrians could be hurt, less property damage seems like a no brainer to me. Perhaps our wise council members could reconsider this. If we could find 8 of them.

Higby can we get some footage of Red Spot at public comment yesterday?

What the heck is a specific plan? Who the heck is Joseph Mailhandler? Maybe NOONE cares!

Now Red Spot is calling Dario Frommer "Dushbagio Frommer" anonymously in the comments of his silly post yesterday. Higby you are skating on thin ice keeping this guy Scott around.

Joe,
I don't think too many folks take stock in what Mailander writes. I wouldn't give it the time of day.

If Mike Gatto had just read my book, 22 Immutable Laws of Branding, he would be getting paid right about this time. Only a fool doesn't get paid.

Haha. Mike has to go home to his woman and tell her he ain't gettin' paid! How emasculating! (That if he had any 'mascule' to begin with.)

Who are the members of council that voted to keep the red light cameras? I know Tony Cardenas voted for it because he is getting some serious money from the company - an Arizona company, btw - so much for that boycott. But then again, Lil' Napolean Cardenas wasn't much for principles anyway. Let's cross check that company's donations with donations to city council members - this is where we would find the $1.5 million lost every year.

As an independent voice, I'd like to offer my insight about Specific Plans. The conventional wisdom is not to open them up for a rewrite, because they already are more restrictive than the Zoning Code and the Community Plans. A rewrite may result in losing a lot of what you already have. Having seen no details, I don't know if the Foothill Blvd SP, one of the most restrictive in the city is being bandied about for a rewrite or an amendment, because the procedures differ.
The SP was written in a different era & may be outmoded, but the current political environment with its emphasis on development and jobs at any cost is not the right atmosphere to re-write or even amend restrictive docs. May end up losing what you have.
Not once have I seen on this site any write-up of some crucial planning changes taking place that seek to dilute community control and increase developer control such as the zoning code amendments, the CPIO and other ordinances under work or being proposed by the planning department. Maybe, it is due to ignorance or lack of interest. But if those issues aren't even being discussed than I'd urge a word of caution to those who profess to understand planning, the lobbyists and the development process in LA. You ain't seen nothing yet. I'd also add that it is presumtive and arrogant of any community to believe that a single victory against a large development such as Home Depot was based on their skills and persistence rather than a configuration of interests remotely connected to theirs.

Where's Dr. Deming, y'all? He needs to weigh in, too.

Mailander's had a hard-on for Joe B for months, ever since Joe B busted him for his Facebook cut & paste crap.
This is all just Mailander's crybaby

According to the recent Gallup poll, 22% of all Americans said they wouldn't support their party's nominee for president if the candidate was a Mormon.
That's bad news for Romney and Huntsman.
The numbers were 20% for Republicans and independents, and 27% for Dems.
