Los Angeles Politics Hotsheet for Tuesday
Mayoral candidate Kevin James pulls ahead of the declared pack in fundraising announcing over half a million in commitments to his campaign from over 100 donors. In an exclusive to the Sister City, James says “I am honored and humbled to have earned such strong early support from all across the community. I am encouraged and motivated by their commitment to this campaign."
Curbed LA has video of the new MTA Expo Line, now under testing on recently completed track.
Following the tragic death of a South LA child who was injured by a falling object, the LAFD has issued a number of safety warnings parents should take heed of.

100 people gave Kevin James $5000.00
apiece? Yea, right. I suspect a major corporate throw-down here.

12:37, No, he claims to have $500k in PLEDGES. Big difference from having $500k in hand.

That's funny that's all you guys got. It's going to be fun watching the mental gymnastics the power structure will have to do around an openly gay candidate in the race, especially when we will likely have closeted candidates running.

LOL Higby. GOOD ONE! Girlfriend Phil Jennerjahn agrees with Joe B. When are you going to tell us why Phil is smart?

Kevin James is never going to be the mayor of LA. We should move on to more viable candidates.

$500k from over 100 people? Are you people asleep at the wheel?
The maximum contribution is $1k, so in order to have $500k in cash or pledges, he would need to have 1,000 people giving $500, or 500 people giving $1k.
From what you say, the most 'over 100 people' could legally contribute is over $100k.
You are not going to solve the city's budget mess with math like this, Kevin, so some clarification please.

Mayor and JoeB are so full of it: Antonio Villaraigosa has been given a record-setting fine for ethics violations, and this blog hasn't said a word about it.
Pikers.

"A half-million in commitments?"
That sounds a whole lot like what your buddy Phil Jennerjahn belatedly CLAIMED he raised for Recall City Hall.
But when people started calling Phil on this, he switched gears and said that NONE of it came in.
So Phil, perhaps like Kevin, claimed one obnoxious amount, only to later have to deny it when he was accused of using it to fund his gambling in the World Series of Poker, where the entry fee is $10,000. Odd, how Phil suddenly came up with that money and more to rent a "sweet" Mustang.
Learn to challenge these claims, Higby. Your efforts will then be more interesting.

I'm with 1:04am on all points.

This was Kevin's first mistake. He created an expectation that he will never be able to deliver on. I understand why he did it. He wants to create himself as a viable candidate in order to generate real contributions. The media won't fall for it. Too bad. I like Kevin.

The fact that you even promote this information as having some sort of "exclusive" goes to show how little value this blog has in the Los Angeles political scene. Kevin James is going to get beat like Walter Moore, Daniel Hernandez, "Melrose" Larry Green, and every other wacko who has run that isn't supported by major donors, the democratic party, labor, or doesn't have the money to run a real campaign.
RIP, Mayor Sam Blog. It was good while it lasted...

I bet discredited Michael Trujillo who is trying to get the gig from one of the candidates for mayor is spinning away on James.
It is laughable because the gay community is going to support Kevin.

Where is Huizar on this? Aren't these his high ranking friends - at least to his rankings.

I had a closer read of Kevin James' announcement regarding the $500k from 100 people in response to the point made by 6:22am.
It's actually entirely possible that James actually does have half a million pledged as the 100 people are "Co-Chairmen" who have pledged to raise $25k each, and "Finance Committee" members who have pledged to raise $10k each.
Bottom line, It's a really smart way of spreading the responsibility for raising money, and it's highly likely that with such an organized approach, James will have no difficulty reaching this target.
Looks like James really will be able to mount a credible challenge and as the only republican in the field, will likely get 1st place in the primary.
