LA Back in the Day
Labels: los angeles history
This is the city: Los Angeles, California. I work here. I'm an ex-mayor. Los Angeles is a magnet for people from all over the world. Some of them run for public office. Inevitably some of them stray from the golden rule and rule for those that have the gold. That's when I go to work. My name is Yorty. I'm a dead pol.

The Republicans fucked it up.

Ummm, no. Since you're getting political, that would be the democrats and the unions to blame.
Everything you saw when it was still in place was assembled back when LA was a mostly a non-union town, read your history.
When LA was primarily conservative it was a flourishing and growing city through the 1960's with a very large middle-class. It suffered from lack of a master plan that some cities today have and growth and development was mostly left to land developers to do as they saw fit, which is why we have a hodge podge today when you drive through the streets. But for the most part, for generations LA was a clean safe place to raise a family and live a decent life.
The democrat-socialists slowly started creeping into city government in about the late 1960's and everything has gone downhill from there.
Today we have essentially a small upper-upper-upper class of very weathly mostly liberal elites that live on the west side and used to live in the Valley, but even that is slowly going away. The rest of the city is nearly all dirt-poor and not paying taxes because they don't make enough to have to. I won't go into why, because that's been extensively covered elsewhere in the past on this blog by others.
The commercial and industrial parts of LA, like the port, the airports, some parts of the Valley and downtown are what are keeping the city afloat today.

I agree with the first poster. The Republican and the developers fucked it up. Capitalists will always ruin things in the zeal to save a buck. Now we assemble cars and clothing in China and our telemarketing/customer service jobs are in India.
Thank you capitalist Republicans. Hope you sleep well with your money while having nightmares that the Democrats will take over and be sure everyone has health care and food.
