Saturday Morning Funnies

Chris Essel's proposed development plan for Sunland-Tujunga - Illustration by Ben Cartwright

Every now and then a comment posted by one of our readers is so informative, entertaining, or amusing it warrants a bump up to the full blog and becomes it's own post.  The following is from Joe B's story on the KRLA radio debate between CD2 candidates Paul Krekorian and Chris Essel, hosted by Kevin James Friday night.  The comment followed Krekorian's announcement that CD2 primary challenger Mary Benson has endorsed the Valley Assemblymember and is a parody on the vindictive press release issued by Essel upon the earlier news Friday that another major CD2 challenger, Tamar Galatzan, had announced her backing of Krekorian.  Blog away dum dums!

Since John Shallman is having a bad night. I took it upon myself to write his press release denouncing Mary Benson's endorsement of Paul Krekorian.

October 30th, 2009 – Sunland Tujunga politician Mary Benson announced today that she will support California State Assembly Leader Paul the Armenian Krekorian in the 2nd district City Council special election.

Benson's endorsement comes just a few weeks after a meeting with Council candidate and Valley businesswoman Christine Essel. In the meeting, Essel asked Benson to consider supporting an effort to turn Foothill Blvd into an all dirt road like it was in the 1920's. Benson was not supportive of the idea and detailed a litany of reasons as to why reform would be impossible.

“Christine Essel never asked for Mary Benson's endorsement. Instead, she asked her to think about supporting a plan to break up the large dysfunctional Horse properties in Shadow Hills,” Essel spokesman John Shallman said. “Unfortunately, Mary wouldn’t even consider it. Now she’s trying to protect the the fat and lazy horse owners by issuing a political endorsement of a fellow off the boat professional politician who opposes sodomizing all horses.”

Essel has been on record as a supporter of turning Foothill Blvd into a dirt road throughout the campaign. Essel’s detailed plan to reform L.A. government, “Big Ideas for a New L.A.,” contains recommendations to reform the tare down all CD2 streets so sewer lines can function more effectively by running openly in the middle of every street, so the children of the CD2 rabble can also use them as swimming pools.

Isnt' John Shallmana the campaign consultant that convienently forgot to mail out thousands of info for Flora Krisiloff against Rosendahl? Don't trust him. Emails flying on the corruption of Chief selection and it was a done deal before Bratton left town. People should show up at Van Nuys City Hall on Monday and protest there was no neighborhood council input as Mayor said would be. Shame on police commissioners who insiders say were TOLD TO PUT BECK AND MOORE ON FINAL LIST. Where is the investigation on the corruption, maybe that's why Andre Biotte is glad to get the hell out of there. Dumb ass LA Slimes kid Joel Rubin not reporting today BECK had Bratton campaigning for him a long time ago. Moore uses being Hispanic and it is an outright LIE why didn't the lazy ass reporters print that? Wait for sexual harrassement suits if Moore gets anywhere up in rank. Shallman only got the Times nod because Jim Newton was still there, along with Greene who still is, and he and other staffers have been "handled" in the past by John Thomas and have a working "understanding" with Shallman. Thomas is the very Republican "party strategist" whose very Republican long-time activist Republican family connections give him an "in" with the staffers who lean that way and hate the mayor. By himself Shallman goes too far and is regarded with a heavy dose of skepticism now.

I think my question exposing Phil's immaturity was completely relevant. He told us that in October we'd know how many signatures he has.

Where are they? He talked about it on this blog, so why can't I question him about it?

He's a big boy. He can handle it. Or cant he?

October 31, 2009 12:07 PM

Essel got the nod because Riordan spoke to Newton early on about her.

Riordan asked Newton to orchestrate the endorsement telling him about Essel, "She is our girl. We own her."

Besides phil thinks we're all going to forget about it. No way. Not on THIS blog!

Riordan and John Thomas both had sway over Jim Newton. Now Greene is holding down that end of the fort as staunchly as he can and writes a lot of the editorials for the paper, and Zahniser is sympathetic to them but Phil Willon and some others in news and editorial aren't as predictable so the paper is all over the place.

Thomas boasted to insiders about how the decimation of the reporting ranks at the paper worked to their advantage because their candidate's own PR and leave-behinds were used almost verbatim as "fact." This isn't so much an issue with Essel because she's an open book and has worked with the local business community her whole career, as has Paul, but you can still see the transparent technique in things like how she claims she moved back to that apt. in the Valley "because I always knew I'd return to the valley someday." She gets a save on that one only because Paul doesn't live in the district either. They're both avoiding having to buy a house there until they win and who can blame them in this market.

Hey 12:36 Essel outspent and outraised Krekorian in the primary and still came in way behind him. With all her mistakes and Shallman's continual malpractice how the hell does she win now? Short of a major Krekorian f-up, Paul wins.

Endorsements by themselves do not win, you are correct. However Krekorian has more quantity and quality.

Most important, Krekorian has a massive campaign army, something like 2-300 volunteers, mostly young, who see Paul as another RFK or Obama. Essel does not motivate that kind of emotion which goes a long way.

Paul also has the armies of the Democratic Party and the unions who have resources.

Chris has some big bang supporters but they don't have the resources. She's like the Spanish Armada.

You've got to laugh at all this but it is typical of an (unfortunately) empty suit like Chris.

For example, I was at a community picnic. Paul arrived early and he and his staff helped out at the picnic (cooked, etc.). Then Paul had to leave but he worked the crowd and his staff stayed and helped. Neither he nor his staff campaigned.

What did Chris' team do? She sent a few College kids to campaign. The kids were told that they could not campaign as this was just a picnic but that Chris could buy a meal ticket or help out. The kids called Chris on her cell phone. Chris came by in 30 minutes but with Frank Sheftel in tow. I don't know if she bought a meal ticket but she and Frank hung out with three people who she knew and then left. She did not mingle with people or even offer to help.

See the difference. Sure, Paul has political experience and he knows how to work a crowd. Chris needs a good teacher and she certainly does not have anyone she can rely one. That is very telling.

Let me get this straight, Shallman sends his client to meet the women who finished third and could swing the race and NEVER asked for her endorsement? If that was his advise he should be fired on the spot.

The problem for Essel is not that Shallman is a clinical liar. Her problem is that he is not a very good liar.

She left this district high and dry over 2 years ago (obviously concentrating on her higher ambition), supported the city council ordinance on SB1818, etc. etc. And then adds insult to injury by supporting Chris Essel. If that isn't telling about the Mayor's lap dogs, (especially Wendy)then I don't know what is. Look at the count, Essel has 6 City Councilmember endorsements: Janice Hahn, Herb Wesson, Jan Perry, Greig Smith, Bill Rosendahl and Tom LaBonge (and Wendy, who should be ostracized for publicly endorsing anyone as the City Controller who might one day audit the individual involved). And Essel doesn't sound like an outsider to me. You want business as usual? Vote for Essel, you want change, it's got to be Krekorian. He has only one City Councilmember endorsement and it's the new guy, Paul Koretz.

That Tamar (who is another moron) and Benson (who is an illegal immigrant hate baiter) have joined forces against Wendy's dream of being the first female mayor of Los Angeles is a big blow to Wendy.
It's also a sign that the wheels are coming off the Essel wagon as it is fairly obvious that Tamar's endorsement was available to the highest bidder, and Essel was asleep at the wheel.
Paul Kreckorian has shown he is a more masterful player and clearly has the experience from Sacramento that will make him an effective campaigner for the interests of CD2.
I wanted an independent, but we have to make the choice between an experienced legislator and a movie industry executive. It's a no brainer. Krekorian wins.

Adrin Nazarian, Krekorian's Chief of Staff and friend of Stuart Waldman who hates Sue Burnside and John Shallman, clearly has a lot of time on his hands this Halloween posting anti Essel/Shallman slurs.

Here's a clue to the rest of you Pro Jack Weiss, Krekorian and Galatzan campaign operatives posting all of the anti Essel/Shallman delusional rantings:

1. Shallman kicked Tamar's ass so bad she'll never run for office again, will have to defend an FPPC investigation into her illegal mailings, pay tens of thousands of dollars in fines and legal fees and will likely face a recall. Her career is over--put a fork in it.

Thus, her endorsement is meaningless to voters. If you don't believe me, Count how many mailers Krekorian puts her face on. It won't be many if he's smart. Her job rating along with the LAUSD is almost as bad as the State Legislature.

2. Unfortunately for Higby and Hacopian the election takes place on December 8th for CD2 residents. It's not held on this blog by non voting campaign operatives who live in Glendale with the last name Azarian.

3. On the endorsement front, Paul Krekorian asked for Wendy Greuel's endorsement. So did Tamar Galatzan. They would have loved to have it because her job approval is through the roof--in spite of the few haters on this blog. Essel didn't ask for Essel's endorsement because it was irrelevant for her. Why would she need it? Let's see, do you want Wendy Greuel on your mailers who got almost 70% of the vote in CD2 when she ran for Controller or do you want Tamar Galatzan who got 13% in the City Council Primary?

When Higby disagrees with campaign strategy against his endorsed candidate, you sound irritated, insulted, almost shrill. You can only call something malpractice when it results in damages. In this case a loss. So far, Essel is in the runoff, leading with money and IMPORTANT endorsements. Galatzan is toast and Krekorian can't raise a nickel. Yes, what an awful job those Essel people are doing. Let's bring in Ace Smith and Mike Trujillo to fuck it up like they did Weiss. More wishful thinking by Higby, Hacopian and Nazarian.

I particularly love Higby, who as far as I can tell has never actually run a political campaign in his life, fancies himself an expert.

I love the Republican Higby citing Krekorian's armies of supporters from unions and the Demo Party that will put him over the top==just like they did for that other RFK Jack Weiss.

Yes, Shallman is killing his candidate's chance to win the support of the 19 Galatzan and Krekorian supporters who read this blog.

Keep smoking that weed and spinning fellas. Your anger belies a deep sense of dread. The end is near.

Brilliant retort 12:16. "How could she lose to an Assemblyman in the Primary?"

You don't "lose" primaries, you either win a place in the run off or you don't. Tamar lost. Bensen lost. Essel and Krekorian won. According to Krekorian's own poll, Essel started lower than Bensen and far behind Galatzan. Almost 20% behind Krekorian who has been a habitual candidate.

Trutanich finished second in the primary--in your definition he lost to Weiss. NO. Amerian, Berger and Noel Weiss lost.

Trutanich won and beat Jack like a drum in the runoff.

This idea that Essel outspent Krekorian and still lost is a wonderful myth Higby and Krekorian continue to perpetuate to convince themselves that money doesn't matter. The fact is if you look at Krekorian's financial reports from all of his Assembly accounts and the City Council race over the same period of time, you will see that he actually spent almost as much money in the Primary as Essel and has accrued a huge debt in the process.

Here's your reality check:

The Essel campaign to voters has shown a steady rise from the day her mail started landing in voters mailboxes. A 26% increase according to Krekorian's own polling. Krekorian has gone up, but at a much slower rate: only 15%. Galatzan? Well, she went down. Humiliated and angry she has endorsed Paul. The two Jack Weiss lovers are together again. It was meant to be...riding away in the sunset of political oblivion.

8:58 is Adrin Nazarian. Why don't you take Paul's miniscule warchest and buy a clue. There was absolutely NO CHANCE Galatzan was going to endorse Essel. What specific facts would support an alternative view?

Did any of you actually watch the campaign or see the mailers? It would be like Trutanich asking for Jack Weiss's endorsement for Mayor. He would neither get it or want it.

Essel utterly humiliated Galatzan and ended her short career that was started by using Antonio's millions to win the school board seat.

All of you political rocket scientists should explain why Essel would want and/or need Galatzan at this point other than to look duplicitous and purely political cutting a backroom deal like Paul did. How would she look asking for the endorsement of the candidate she called corrupt in the Primary?

It was a highly intelligent and ethically consistent move that can only be judged when we see the result of this election--not the wishful utterances of a few Krekorian and Galatzan political loyalists.

As far as quantity and quality of endorsements are concerned, Higby, who does Paul really have that matters to voters?

From his own endorsement list:

Speaker Karen Bass
Assemblymember Mike Feuer
Assemblymember John Perez
Assemblymember Kevin de Leon
Assemblymember Hector De La Torre
Assemblymember Mike Eng
Assemblymember Jose Solorio
Assemblymember Fiona Ma
State Senator Mark Leno (I'm sure this one will score highly with Sunland Tujunga voters)

Yes, Sacramento has set such a wonderful example of reform, transparency and fiscal discipline. I'm sure that's EXACTLY what voters are hoping for.

Now, just throw in LAUSD, and you have the winning combination.

Go buy that clue fast. it's not too late.

Lets see:

You have twice the money, the best endorsement (former holder of the seat), and running against some one coming from an institution no one likes.

So what is the excuse for finishing in second place?

Your either a liar or don't know what your talking about. Essel's people put on the full court press from John Fairbanks to former VICA board members to push Tamar to endorse Essel.

Why don't you just admit that it was stupid to attack Tamar in the primary and drive her over to Krekorian in the runoff.

You will get a lot more respect if you admit that rather than telling lies no one believes.

The phantom Nuch employee should identify himself and "all the people who can't stand this guy." You won't because you are spineless and you can't because you are a fraud.

Thanks for making the point about how worthless Galatzan's endorsement is. She's not worthy of either endorsement list. If I was Paul I certainly wouldn't trade out Galatzan for Baca in a mailer.

He'd be an idiot. Oh, wait. Maybe they actually will do that...assuming they have any money for postage.

Diane Feldman is Antonio's pollster and Fairbank is Jerry Brown's pollster and was Steve Soboroff's pollster AGAINST Antonio. Check the finance reports amateur.

Guess who worked for Antonio? Krekorian's consultant: Eric Hacopian.

Its funny to see how many of the Essel posts here are just boasts about the money she has raised.

The one thing always more important than money raised for a campaign, is how that money is spent.

Post is real funny.

Never understood how people can take pot shots at Benson and Tamar endorsement's for Krekorian.

Specially when they where boasting about Essel's endorsements by:

A deranged homeless guy.
Guy who spoke no English.
And the drug dealing Willy Wonka.

Cant have it both ways.

By the way, I love these anonymous wannabe consultants. Other than Higby, no one else has the balls to identify themselves to stand up to the scrutiny.

I'd love for one of these days to have a public forum of Mayor Sam bloggers in a big room with these rock star political consultants for a real debate. Force everyone out of the closet. Let's see how tough people are face to face rather than hiding behind their computer screens bouncing back and forth from Mayor Sam, youtube to youporn.

Call for one of those.
