Breaking News: Newsom to drop out of Governor's Race

UPDATE: The San Mateo Daily Journal reports at 3:05 PM Gavin is out:

"This is not an easy decision. But it is one made with the best intentions for my wife, my daughter, the residents of the city and county of San Francisco, and California Democrats," Newsom stated in the release.

Full Newsom statement at MS2

SACRAMENTO - (developing) We don't know if this is a Halloween prank (and if it is it's not mine cause I only do April Fools Jokes) but sources in the Capital are telling us that a handful of high profile donors to candidate for Governor Gavin Newsom say the San Francisco Mayor is going to announce this afternoon his withdrawl from the race, after failing to gain traction in the race.

Stay tuned.

PS: Don't get pissed off if this doesn't happen. It's coming from four good sources and I wouldn't put it up if I thought it wasn't possible. Things change and people lie. So if Gavin stays in, I'll have a drink. I might have one anyway.

Blog away dum dums.

Go Governor Moonbean! At least you vote!

Yeah, but look at the people he voted for!!!

if you are happy with Obamacare, Cap and Trade, out of sight deficit spending, waffling on Afghanistan, Czars and Czarinas and others too numerous to mention, then vote for the Democrat and finish off the Republic.

Otherwise, joint the taxpayer revolution, and vote the Democrats out of office everywhere you can.

That includes Moonbeam and friends.

Does that mean Tony V. MIGHT get back into the race?

PLEASE, Please Please!

The sooner he's not our mayor, the better. Plus, the state's already beyond repair. What harm could our midget mayor do?

He is about 20 points behind Brown in most polls. The only one who can stop Brown is Dianne Feinstein and she's too comfortable in the Senate to try to run for Governor.

If Gavin drops out there will be a mass suicide over at the LAist. Not that I care, I just want to make sure a cleanup crew is available prior to the announcement, that's all.

Michael, fyi, a DATELINE is used when you're actually filing a report from a city and talking to real people in that city.

Now let me get this straight:

You have FOUR people telling you the same thing--and you're still not sure?

Either "You lie!" or...

You've got four of the most tepid and unreliable sources in any stable of sources; in which case, maybe you shouldn't be floating this at all, lest MayorSam become "the home of ill-founded Dateline: SACTO rumors that were really invented in NoHo."

"Things change and people lie," you say. So--is that like a bit of a...hedge? Are you admitting you don't really trust your most reliable sources because it turns out they're...wait for it...not reliable at all?

Let's check...Gavin Newsom still has 1,200,000 followers on Twitter. This SF Examiner post says volunteers will be working his phone bank tomorrow. But if you think it's worthwhile watching for him to slip out of the race today, we'll...watch...carefully.

Higby, leave Joe alone. He's the only erudite (look that up) blogger who shows up here regularly to give you your clickety-clicks: meanwhile you've got Jennerdoodle and your track record on endorsements sucks.

However this one turns out to be true. Newsom quitting because of "my daughter" who's a toddler is an absurdly obvious cover for what even the Slimes reports as what it is, a lack of fundraising ability and low numbers. He's DOA behind Jerry who hasn't even announced.

Now Bill Clinton will be out of this race.

Meg Whitman's commercial promises creating 2 million jobs, because she helped create thousands with E-Bay. HATE how she says that word, and her "radio bloopers" are already adding up and she's barely started. Plus never voted til age 49 because she was "too busy raising my family and looking after my husband," she said. Like there's no absentee balloting up north? All the Republicans suck. It's Jerry Reformed Moonbeam, unless someone gets Feinstein to foil him or unless Whitman's money can bury him with enough old dirt.

Someday I hope I can be like Joseph Mailander and break stories on picnic benches and magpies landing on strip malls.

Anyway - so does Jerry coast now? For sure Sam Clauder is not happy at this moment.

Whoever thought there would be a need for a "progressive" alternative to Jerry Brown.

Yeah I know Michael, whatever appears here is far more important than a bench in Griffith Park. Many lives all throughout Los Angeles benefited enormously by the fact that you learned from "four" readers that Gavin Newsom was opting out. If I had to choose between that news and a picnic bench, I'd choose the bench every time.

In case you missed it: I liked the fact that you had a scoop. But I thought the way it was presented, hedged with uncertainty and ready to dismiss the rumor itself as lies if it proved incorrect, was entirely bush. Even so, I am glad LA has a rumor mill; the trouble is, so many of the rumors never pan out. "Stay tuned."

gossip up in San Fran is saying Newsom went the wrong way against the Board of Supervisors going after illegals.
....Newsom vetoes change in S.F. sanctuary law requiring that undocumented youth be reported to federal immigration officials for possible deportation after they're convicted of a felony, not when they're first arrested, as is the current policy.
....Call it sanctuary on wheels: San Francisco is about to give a big break to people, many of them illegal immigrants, who are caught driving without a license.

Guess San Fran doesn't want those illegals up there and they will soon be coming here to LA because of our gang banger Mayor

Mailander --

I think what Higby was hedging, but here's why.

The Gavin Newsom is dropping out rumor has been floated by several reputable news sources but was always denied by the Newsom campaign.

Here in Higby's first post about Newsom dropping out -- it just wasn't that there is speculation he might (someday) Higby went on out on the limb to say it was in fact "today"

No other news outlet had this -- no other political blog had it.

Higby did.

Now you can quibble with the vocabularly Higby used, but i think he knew that this story has been said before to not be true so he was just being slightly more cautious.

And there is nothing wrong with that.

Hooray to Mayor Sam and its scoop -- not even the local SF press had this story.

Good for you Michael. You know how to do this kind of thing. Congratulations! -- As for Newsome, he was not going to make it anyway. He’s been floundering around with the campaign and has shown very little initiative lately. Now, who’s got next?

What was that definition of "dateline" again, Mailander?

You insufferable blowhard -- acting like you actually know something about journalism. The MOST important thing in any news-oriented venture is, simply put: GET IT FIRST.

Incomplete, only partly correct, sourced through local gossips and convicted felons, even vigorously denied (at first) by those involved . . .it JUST don't matter.

GET IT FIRST, is all that does.

Otherwise, instantaneous online media wouldn't be killing off the more professional dailies, nationwide.

Howard Beale and Mulholland Terrorist are both mad as hell, and we're just NOT going to read anything posted here by Mailander, ever again.
