Galatzan Endorses Krekorian; Essel Starts a Cat Fight
Former CD2 candidate and school board member Tamar Galatzan has endorsed Paul Krekorian for CD2. But that's not the big story.The Not Ready for Prime Time Players at the Chris Essel campaign do it again. After writing her wrong home address on Frank Sheftel's petition, not knowing the schools in her District and most amazingly, palling around with holocaust deniers, Essel and her team have pulled a really big boner.
They have issued a pre-emptive press release with a vindictive attack on Galatzan that just isn't seen, even in the rotten old world of Los Angeles Politics. In the John Shallman (Essel's consultant) crafted piece, the Essel campaign accuse Galatzan of not wanting to discuss LAUSD reform and offered the following:
“Christine Essel never asked for Tamar Galatzan’s endorsement. Instead, she asked her to think about supporting a plan to break up the largest and most dysfunctional school district in America,” Essel spokesman John Shallman said. “Unfortunately, Tamar wouldn’t even consider it. Now she’s trying to protect the bloated LAUSD bureaucracy by issuing a political endorsement of a fellow professional politician who opposes district reform."
Galatzan's support for Krekorian will not doubt cement his support amongst community leaders actually in the District leaving only developers, Downtown interests, Hollywood studios and a few disgruntled folks in Camp Essel. Expect a cascade of new support for Krekorian to be announced next week.
Anyone want to stick a fork in the Essel campaign? It's done.

It's sour grapes Galatzan. She's worked out a deal with Krekorian for his support at another run when he leaves for the senate seat. Back room politics at it's worst.
Essel wouldn't last 5 seconds in a real catfight. The second she broke a fingernail, she'd drop out.
This is huge for Paul! I agree, MS, you are going to see all the neighborhood groups endorsing Paul over the next few weeks.

But not impossible. She just needs to raise more money and get more of the non-participants to get out to vote.
This choice doesn't surprise me. Tamar is an ambitious girl and crossing her party here would have been a bad career move for her long-term political prospects.
Krekorian wanted to release the endorsement Monday. So, actually it was a brilliant move by the Essel campaign to force Krekorian to release her endorsement at THE worst possible time for coverage: Friday night. The same night Newsom drops out and sucks up all the media attention.
Democratic Party's own Eric Bauman cut the deal: Krekorian for City Attorney in 2013. Tamar runs for CD 2 in yet another special election with Party and Krekorian's endorsement should Paul win. Look for big money from the Party for PK to make this happen.
Couldn't be worse news for Paul. Tamar's endorsement is the kiss of death. Now he's tagged with Sacramento AND LAUSD.
Played right into Shallman's hands.

Oh did you hear that... its Shallman's new German car, paid for by the downtown contributers of the Edsel Campaign. As a prize for making her lose this race. Shallman is pushing Edsel to fundraise just so he can get paid well but is not having her campaign because he knows she lost. Any phony Polling yet to get her to think she is on the right track?
The only way Edsel can fight off the grim reaper is to pick up the support of Mary Benson. (Edsel camp has been barging that she will be picking up in the weeks to come).
I supported Tamar in Sep. and was unsure who to vote for in Dec. but now that Edsel is attacking Tamar someone that is not in the race, I will not only vote for Krekorian but will give him money to make sure that the
Stupid Wicked Witch of the Westside will not win! and sell our valley to the Downtown Vampires.
PS Edsel TAMAR IS NOT IN THE RACE!!! Don't let Shallmen trick you into hitting her, unless you are doing the dirty work for your boy Antonio!

But seriously, did you post the part of the message about Essel accusing Galatzan of trying to "protect the bloated LAUSD bureaucracy" as tongue in cheek?
You know that's true. Why would anyone running for City Council and trying to appear to be some kind of breath of fresh air want any LAUSD board member's endorsement? LAUSD was dying of clogged arteries and failing on every front long before City and state budgets started falling apart.
The only difference now is they have something (new) to blame their inability to educate on.

1. call her out and ask that she publish this “school reform” plan.
2. lausd is made up of 26 cities; la city council does not carry end-all, be-all influence. if she wants to restructure the district, she should seek office at the school board or state legislature. it's not going to happen at the city level- just ask the mayor re: AB 1381.
3. “breaking up the district?” she’s trying to appeal to valley secession advocates. tell her to talk to Cameron Smyth’s office about his recent, failed bill that tried to break up the district. bottom line, she’s saying nothing new.
4. ask her to talk about current reform measures at the district. she couldn’t name a school in her district, much less would she be able to describe the latest decentralization effort… but yet she’s offended she can’t impart her “miracle pill” of a plan.

I've told you before the Mayor is on Essels side NOT on Krekorians side. Everyone at CCA and City Hall knows it. It is not that big a secret downtown. AV is pissed at Shallman but not enough to let that stand in the way of helping Essel behind the scenes all the way. He loves the entertainment industry and she is part of that establishment. He brings her lots of cash and that is what will pay for her to get the vote out and that is all that counts on election day.

Notice the timing of the release. Today, the headline was simple: Krekorian having a very hard time raising money, while Essel has gobs of cash.
Krekorian desperately needs to draw attention away from that, so he releases the endorsement of a candidate who his opponent hit like crazy in the primary.

Galatzan's endorsement of Krekorian is big. Doesn't matter about Friday night. Everyone will know about it by Monday. Higby is right that those who are interested will find out right here. My take is that Mary Benson will come out for Krekorian within a couple of days. She will bring a substantial grass-roots following. Essel has the advantage with money, but some unions, if they think Krekorian has a good chance will start to fund his race offsetting Essel's advantage.
