Tony and "Comadre Maria" raise the financial stakes in City Attorney Race
Are Antonio Ramon Villar and his "comadre" Maria Elena Durazo getting nervous that their "westside political guy" Jack Weiss, will not bring home the "political bacon", err City Attorney office to the left wing of the machine they led??
Witness the outlay of cash from the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor as reported tonight on the Los Angeles Times Web Site.
The political action committee of the powerful Los Angeles County Federation of Labor -- closely allied with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is the chairman of the election committee of City Councilman and candidate Jack Weiss -- notified the city Ethics Commission this week that it was spending $335,309 on media spots to oppose Weiss' foe, Carmen "Nuch" Trutanich.
One must wonder if Villar and Durazo are concern about what a Trutanich victory would mean to their machine as it gears up for a possible march towards Sacramento in 2010.
****By the way, whatever happen to the guy on the left????

$24 Million Dollars
Can Los Angeles Gangs Be Redeemed With Mayor's $24 Million Dollar Program?
According to Sgt. Valdemar, a retired L.A. County Sheriff and Gang Specialist, indicates that by paying gang members will assist the gang members in furthering their organized crime.

No way, County Fed endorsing Weiss. Who would have guessed. I'm so shocked because some of us were thinking that they might endorse Trutanich? Yeah right.
Who you think the Chamber of Commerce's will endorse?
Who will the Sierra Club endorse?
Who will the NRA endorse?
Who will NOW endorse?
It's such a party line race. I can hardly believe you waste your time posting about it. How the hell do you think the above are going to vote?
There are more Democrats registered in LA and the Democratic Party won't exactly be pumping in the money, but they'll be pulling all registered Dems out to vote.
I'm not even following this race and I can guess how it turns out. And frankly, I hope I'm right but don't care enough. Historically, I don't think the City Attorney and the Mayor have that much interaction. You put so much emphasis on the Weiss/Villaraigosa friend issue. So what? Isn't that a good thing? Come on, they sat next to each other in the horseshoe and got along. What is wrong with that? What's the big deal?
Was the Riordan/Hahn-hate fest better? Or the Villaraigosa/Delgadillo ignore-fest better? Either one? Maybe we need to try something radical, like being friends.

Michael, can you translate these postings by Red Spot into plain English or get him to speak in plain English. He is being too clever for his own good. Does he have a message that he wants people to hear about or just let people know that he thinks he is onto something but doesn't want us to know.

Community activists reading this blog: We MUST get the word out to all of our email lists that Carmen Trutanich is the better choice for communities of the City of Los Angeles.
Carmen has REAL courtroom experience which is RELEVANT to the decisions that the City Attorney must make in settling civil litigation against the City. Jack Weiss has already risen above his level of incompetence. His attendance at City Council was appalling. His disdain for listening to constituent concerns was palpable. We need a City Attorney who shows up for work -- not one who has a proven record of dodging work.
The stakes could not be higher. We MUST get the word out to our communities NOW as the vote by mail goes on.
Send an email today to all your contacts explaining why voters should immediately request a vote by mail ballot and send it back in!!!

OP-ED LA SLIMES
By Erwin Chemerinsky
...No room for a covert client list in city attorney race
There are no legal grounds for Carmen Trutanich to avoid disclosure by claiming confidentiality rules, and voters need to be able to weigh a candidate's past dealings.
.....the Los Angeles city attorney race has been dominated by one issue: Whether Carmen Trutanich, a San Pedro attorney and former prosecutor, will disclose the identity of his former clients. His opponent, City Councilman Jack Weiss, has repeatedly asked for this disclosure. Trutanich has refused. I have endorsed neither candidate...But as someone who has taught legal ethics for more than 25 years and who is very familiar with the role of the city attorney under the City Charter, I would say Weiss is unquestionably correct on one issue: The voters should know who Trutanich has represented, and there are no legal grounds for Trutanich's stonewalling. There are many reasons that the voters should know who the candidates for city attorney have represented as lawyers in their private practices, first among them that their previous law practices can become an issue in public life. Three years ago, the California Supreme Court held that a case handled by the San Francisco city attorney before taking office created a conflict of interest that required disqualification of the entire office from handling a fraud case. The voters thus need to know a candidate for city attorney's clients in order to be able to evaluate whether the past representations will cause the need for disqualifications and thus necessitate the hiring of outside counsel, which will involve substantial costs to the taxpayers.
More generally, there is the need for voters to know if a candidate for city attorney took positions that will compromise his or her ability to represent the city effectively. For example, Weiss has asserted that Trutanich has repeatedly represented the National Rifle Assn. and major polluters and has therefore taken positions on gun control and environmental protection that could hinder his ability to effectively represent the city's positions on these issues.

With all due respect to Erwin Chemerinsky, who I believe no longer lives in Los Angeles, whoever gets elected as City Attorney should disclose former clients upon election to office. Any conflicts that MAY arise are dealt with appropriately if they become a reality. This is a balance between between the privacy rights of his clients and the public race for City Attorney. The primary issue in the race is who has a better vision for running the City Attorney's office and who has the best professional background and training. The former clients of Jack Weiss and Carmen Trutanich is a minor issue as to fitness to be City Attorney and Mr. Trutanich, demonstrating he is a trustworthy attorney to his clients, strikes the balance in favor of privacy unless or until is may be necessary to disclose to deal with potential conflict of interest issues should they actually come up.

So, tell us Red, just who exactly are you backing?
Don't waffle around here, we want to know, who's your boy?
Personally, I thik either one of them will be a vast improvement over the loser we have there now.

The person quoting Chemerinsky in the "L A Slimes" conveniently cuts off the conclusion: that Trutanich is inherently "unfit for such an important office" based on his behavior and assertions.
Chemerinsky nails Trutanich with deliberately distorting the "legal codes" Weiss insists he show to prove his insistence that "it's illegal" to divulge client list. And also JUST MAKING UP LEGAL CODES OUT OF THIN AIR, THAT DON'T EXIST. While Trutanich scolded Weiss at the debate for asking and snidely offered to "teach you the law."
Chemerinsky is not only the head of U C Irvine Law School, but I believe was one of the authors of the L A City Charter -- why he dryly says he "knows something about it."
Go back to your rinky-dink two-man law office representing the NRA, toxic polluters, rich or powerful rapists and thugs, and write more manuals on how to skirt the law. Keep lining your pockets and spare us your ignorance, lies, nastiness and financial exposure. Besides the outright millions it would cost to outsource his clients, he couldn't possibly be credible prosecuting offenders whose side he previously championed. LIKE CHEMERINSKY SAYS, TRUTANICH IS INHERENTLY UNSUITED TO THE JOB.

The point is Jack Weiss' lapdog relationship to Antonio, developers and public employee unions is one big conflict of interest.
Now in his desperation he's having commissioners and lobbyists openly raise money for him - against the city ethics laws.
I guess that doesn't matter to Weiss anyway, since he has not returned the thousands in illegally laundered funds from 2001.
I wonder what crimes the DA's public integrity division will announce against Jack Weiss on May 20???
One way or another, it's over Jack. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving jerk.

Carmen has horrible courtroom experience which is IRRELEVANT to the decisions that the City Attorney must make in settling civil litigation against the City. His client list is appalling and he will NOT be better no matter what he tells you now.
Jack Weiss has not reached his level of competence. His attendance at City Council was no different than other council members. The rumor that he holds disdain for listening to constituent concerns is simply a rumor. We need a City Attorney who shows up for work -- not one who has a proven record of dodging work, like Delgadillo.
The stakes could not be higher. We MUST get the word out to our communities NOW as the vote by mail goes on. Trutanich is the worst choice for the whole City.

Go Jack!

Chief Bratton endorsed Weiss. Let’s not forget that 46 of the 47 police chiefs in Southern CA have endorsed Trutanich. This makes a powerful statement to say the least.
