Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Wednesday

Tuesday a judge reduced the bail for jailed suspected murder Esteban Nunez, son of former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, from $2 million to $1 million. Reports at press time are that Nunez has raised the bail and has been released.

After a bungled attempt last week by School Board President Monica Garcia to oust Superintendent David Brewer the LAUSD Board of Education voted 5-2 Tuesday to buy out the remaining term of his contract, for about half a million dollars. Brewer told reporters earlier Tuesday that he believed racism was behind his termination.

As reported by Joe B.on Mayor Sam Tuesday, the retail hardware giant Home Depot has revived a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the City to allow the Atlanta based firm to open a controversial branch in the foothill community of Sunland-Tujunga. Interesting comments from readers of the trendy real estate blog CurbedLA who don't apparently understand why residents of Sunland-Tujunga don't want this store forced on them.

Mayor Villaraigosa joined with mayors from other big cities nationwide asking President-Elect Obama for major infusions of Federal cash for "infrastructure" projects. Would that include things like Grand Avenue or LA Live? How about properly spending the money you collect already and you would have sufficient funds for basic needs. President-Elect Obama - watch out for these shady guys!

When times are tough here at home, Sheriff Lee Baca has a goofy idea to send 350 LA County Deputy Sheriffs to provide security at the inaguration of Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. next month. It appears that at least a portion of the expense would be borne by LA County leading Supervisors Zev Yaroslavsky and Mike Antonovich to question the wisdom of such a move.

LA CityWatch reports that the Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Coalition has re-elected President Leonard Shaffer over Mid-Town North Hollywod Neighborhood Council member Gary Barrata by "a lopsided vote" at their election meeting on Saturday.

Baratta is a "going Postal" candidate looking for a place to happen. LANCC had no choice really.

I wonder if Tony Villar struck a deal with the LATimes for positive coverage only? I read that's the way it in works in Chicago.

Baratta is the LANCC group's version of Zuma Dogg. Instead of a stocking cap and sunglasses, indoors -- impersonating a wigger-rapper -- he wears military medals and does a mean impersonation of the cartoon caricature loudmouth used car salesman.

Why diss one and applaud the other?

Baratta -- "going postal" or not, correctly points out in a letter to Citywatch that the LANCC is a mission-less non-entity looking for a burial ground. It takes the votes of only 18 self-appointed, marginal players from wholly disinterested NCs to be elected president of the group, far less than could get you a single seat on any real NC board anywhere in the city.

See his letter:

AND, if you're thinking that LANCC has managed to avoid being run by the self-absorbed and potentially unstable this time, then note also that DOCTOR Daniel ("I can serve on the board of 6 different NCs, and TRULY represent the stakeholders in each") Wiseman -- a frequent competitor to Zuma for largest amount of wasted public comment time at city meeting -- was elected to the group's 3rd highest position (probably by as MANY as 20 votes).

Sorry. I witnessed Baratta try to take over the Pacoima NC by sheer force a few years ago. He wasn't even a stakeholder. He's a total freaking nutcase.

I watched George Jefferson throughout my youth.

I laughed at George Jefferson.

ZD, you're NO George Jefferson.

There's NO way you're "movin' on up" - Period!

By "sheer force" huh?

What, did he storm its fortess wall? Come in with firearms blazing?

Shed the melodrama, bubbah. No neighborhood council that has even a minimal combination of a) reasonably clear bylaws, b) a president who's not asleep, and c) active participation by a growing number of stakeholders, is in any danger of being "taken over" by an army of outsiders, let alone one man.

Those that have been rumored to have undergone "takeover" attempts always trace back to one thing, and one thing only. One small, incestuous group of self-selected leaders is outvoted by supporters of another small, incestuous group. And neither group has any interest in involving large numbers of stakeholders, lest they not be the slate eventually favored by the newbies.

(Take for the most recent example, the Glassel Park NC board's failed attempt to get BONC to allow them to change bylaws to cut out stakeholder grievances against the decisions they make. It was nothing more than them trying to shutout the previously ousted, outreach-impaired board's remnants).

Unfortunately for neighborhood councils, the LANCC is a worthless group of politician wannabes who get nothing done at all.

It doesn't matter who chairs them. Len has his own agenda. Gary has his own agenda and neither of them are worthy.

That silly group of losers has a long way to go before they're taken seriously.
