Wacko Jacko and Weezy Want to Watch The Fire Department
The Daily News reports that Council Members Jack Weiss and Jose Huizar are calling for an "independent assessor" whose chief job will be to oversee the Fire Department.
Weiss later stated "Accountability and oversight help prevent discrimination and lawsuits in the fire department, and with a new independent assessor, the city will save taxpayer money and ensure that discipline is handled appropriately whenever it is necessary."
No doubt oversight and transparency is a good thing, however, one has to laugh at the idea of the Council calling for it for another agency of the City.
Therefore I am calling for an "independent assessor" to oversee the City Council. Their job will be to review the Council's behaivor (showing up late or sleeping at meetings), poor decisions (like the Tennie Pierce case) and time wasters (proclamations on Fridays, resolutions supporting Barack Obama, singing songs, etc.) Through this new position, the city will save taxpayer money and ensure that discipline is handled appropriately whenever it is necessary.
"The independent assessor will ensure that the reforms Chief (Douglas) Barry is trying to implement are strictly adhered to and to inform the public if they're not," said Huizar, chair of the Audits and Governmental Efficiency Committee. We need to put the focus back on the important work our firefighters do on a daily basis."

All anyone has to do is look at all the non profits in Weezy's district and all his people who are on them driving nice cars and making over 80k while the low income families suffer. Its a joke and David Zahniser or LA Weekly should do an investigation into all the corrupt non profits in our city.

Ah, another thick level of management so that Jack Weiss can LATER say that he helped the city when he runs for city attorney.
You can read that man like a book, except that a book has a better personality than Jack Weiss, and its readers don't hate the book, the way Weiss's constituents hate him.

They are fools. Oh, and they forgot to be sure they send this idea out to have it studied in a committee so that they could have another instance of make-work to point to in justifying their paychecks.
How could they do better? Let's see. Consider: What would a PRIVATE SECTOR operation do that would be cutting through delays and layers of bureacracy? A bit of adjusting that model might get some productive mileage out of what's already there without a complete revamping for an unknown but certainly expensive result.
What they forget to do is to get their managers to commit to following through with their job of supervision and to make the rules they enforce have some rational and necessary basis for existing. Phony rules just agitate for no reason, unless that is their goal. The no-show tatoo policy comes to mind when thinking of an example for this item.
I agree on the need for oversight in the case of the City Council- the APPLYING the real oversight control, vote them out. As long as they use campaign funding to bombard voters with propaganda that misleads voters, mischaraterizes actions, and bears only the most feint resemblance to what they really are doing in office, people will not know the truth.

Is it not already the Fire Chief's job to everything these men are suggesting?

We don't need an "independent assessor."
We need a Mayor who shows up for work, and actually oversees the departments he's in charge of.

What a joke!!! There should be oversight over the clowns who run this city and make pass stupid ordinances. I can't think of one council member who gets respect anymore. People treat them like normal everyday jerks. I remember when council members were treated extremely respectful but that's gone.

What next? Are they going to tell the Fire Department that they need to fight fires in a politically correct manner, like they've done to the LAPD in crime-fighting?
So "Roll-the-Dice" Weiss and "Sleazy" Huizar want to include another high-paying postion into the the much-ballyhooed City budget deficit.
What a bunch of fiscally irresponsible jerks!
