Conservative Republican writer, a former Bush speechwriter, David Frum, writes that McCain is not only losing the election, but he's losing it in a way that threatens to take the entire Republican Party down with him.
He says that Palin didn't connect with either independents or women as hoped.
So the only choice left for the campaign was to "Palinize" itself in hopes of igniting its Republican base by painting Obama as an alien, a radical, and a socialist.
The problem is that presidential campaigns are always a fight for the middle, and although the Republicans got excited (Higby, Haikula, etc), the tactic turned off the middle, the only place where the election could have been won.
Frum lists all of the otherwise safe Republican seats in Congress that are now battlegrounds.
Although Higby and Haikula haven't accepted the challenge to describe a way in which McCain can win, Frum offers a solution.
He suggests the McCain and the Republican National Committee accept defeat right now in the presidential race and focus its money and energy on saving the other Republicans.

If Obama's tax plans are socialist, what in the world is the Republican designed bailout plan that had the federal government seizing banks?
Don't be afraid Haikula, you too will be absorbed into the progressive Borg once Obama is crowned, I mean elected.
Dear conservatives, we promise it will be painless. You conservatives will be even safe after the revolution, once we eliminate warrantless wire tapping. Once we are in charge of the country, we liberals, will protect your civil liberties so that you can still practice your primitive "conservatism" without fear of persecution.
We won't allow Jewish Stars of David or Muslim Crescents to be in the flags and other public parts of government so that you still practice your "evangelical christian rituals" in peace.
We will protect your high economic status by giving your women a pay raise. While it might you a little bit more in taxes, all the poor and middle class people who receive tax breaks thanks to you, will spend all that money in the stores, like Walmart and Ralphs and Home Depot that you own
stock in (or own), and that will boost your share values!!!
Don't fret conservative, just because you blocked it tooth and claw for the last 25 years or so, you too will benefit when Obama raises the fuel efficiency standards. We won't charge you extra for that cleaner air you'll be breathing (see Clean Air Act, difference on a scale of brown to blue of LA air between 1965 and 2008). That lowered risk of lung disease for your children is a bonus, on us!
So why don't you just stop struggling and let the progressives have a turn at the rudder. Haven't you jacked the country enough? Haven't you had a good run with your Reagan revolution? It really worked out for you for a while, but now it's our turn for a little prosperity and giving some new ideas a chance.
McCain sisters endorse Obama, they are proud of their relationship with John McCain.
Don't get excited. This isn't one of those half-truth Haikula posts.
Joyce and Lillie McCain are descended from a family once held captive as slaves on a Mississippi plantation owned by the great-great-grandfather of John McCain.
John McCain's brother and cousin have attended their family reunions.
Although the sisters have never met John McCain, they have respect and admiration for him, but are supporting Obama.

Good grief!
The Anchorage Daily News has endorsed Obama.
The paper notes that in these times of economic crisis, Obama will bring a steady hand to the White House, while McCain will not.
It says that while McCain spent 25 in Congress as a maverick trying to promote a centrist position, that McCain did not show up for the campaign.
Although the paper is proud that an Alaskan is running for VP, it says that she simply isn't ready to be president, and to put her in a position that is just a heartbeat away from the most important job in the world is just "too risky."

Haikula:
It's pretty certain that the new president will appoint at least one new member of the Supreme Court.
What about Hillary Clinton on the high court?
Then she could be in a much better position to fight the socialism that you so despise and fear.
But of course that could only happen if Obama were elected.
The Gallup daily tracking poll, which Haikula loves to look for hope in this moment of despair for her favorite candidate, shows Obama maintaining a significant lead in the popular vote: 50-45 or 52-43 depending upon the assumptions used.
