Happy Diwali (Festival of Lights)
But for the culture vultures among us--or those doing double duty and/or married to ranis from the subcontinent--I want to wish you a Happy Diwali. Whether in politics or our personal lives, we could all use a "new year of luck and wealth."
Diwali (or Deepavali) is a major Indian holiday, and a significant festival in Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Many legends are associated with Diwali. Today it is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs across the globe as the "Festival of Lights," where the lights or lamps signify victory of good over the evil within every human being. Who gives a flying fuck? Isn't it bad enough we get (Zen Master) Rammadan, Kwaanza, and the worst one of all, El Grito, shoved down our throats every year? Must you add to the "celebratory" shit-pile of "diversity?"
