Heart's Nancy Wilson responds to McCain campaign's use of 'Barracuda' at Republican convention

Mayor Sam: Told you so. :)

Thursday afternoon, Heart e-mailed out a statement regarding vice-presidential candidate Sarah "Barracuda" Palin's use of their similarly monikered song at the Republican National Convention: "The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission," it read. "We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored."

But after McCain finished his speech accepting the GOP's presidential nomination tonight, Palin joined him on stage, and the song was used again: Heart's "Barracuda" played as balloons fell. With that elephant in the room, Heart's Nancy Wilson felt compelled to personally respond. "I think it's completely unfair to be so misrepresented," she said in a phone call to EW.com after the speech. "I feel completely f---ed over." She and sister Ann Wilson then e-mailed the following exclusive statement:

"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

Valley Dope -
Since your meltdown yesterday, you indicated that you'd be having a lot of free time on your hands.

Isn't it about time that you got to that free time and bug off?

Your points are well taken, but it's time for you to take your vulgarity and go.

You are no more going to change others' minds than they are to change yours.

Besides, in California, the turnout is already set in stone. And no one outside of California reads this blog.

Isn't it true that the Wilson sisters have no say in who uses that song.

As long as the Republicans pay for the use fo the music to the recording company that owns the rights to it, they can do what ever they want.

Get over it ladies.

About what? Who cares?

Honestly, what makes you think anyone cares about you and your bizarre behavior yesterday, ranting about everything from Palin to Walter to Ron!

When you lash out, scattershot, no one will listen to you.

Unlike most women in the music industry, the Nancy Wilson wrote her own music. Thgis is something Sarah Palin is not familiar with since she had her speech written for her unlike Obama.

As teh writer, Nancy owns the rights to her song - not the music corporation - but Republicans don't seem to care about such personal rights - just look at Palin's position on choice.

Time after time Republicans havce been asked to refrain from using artists music - John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, etc.,. Maybe Palin should have really gone out on a limb and used a Dixie Chicks song.

The Palin bubble will soon burst - late Septembver tops - as soon as those naked picutres of her hit the internet.

As before Republican seems to equal Hypocrisy in this nation.

We can add Valley Dull to the group of Blogging Burros who have made this blog about themselves and not the "Home of L.A. Politics"

Bring back the whacky Zuma Dogg who at least attends city council metting and trys to keep informed about L.A. politics.

Sony BMG owns the rights to the song.

Heart can express its displeasure, but they do not own the song and have no ability to control its use.

I should add that via Song BMG and I believe Universal, Heart expressed its displeasure and the RECORD LABEL sent the cease & desist.

Don't hold me to this, exactly. But that's the essence of the license situation.

(This is in the general sphere of what I do for a living.)

Hi 1134,

You do not know what you are talking about.

When a band like Heart has a recording contract, it may or may not give the band the licensing rights.

But often, especially early in their careers, the money a band receives from a record label is in EXCHANGE FOR ownership of the lyrics & music.

That's how Michael Jackson ended up owning the Beatles catalog.

Heart does NOT own the rights to the song, but the record label which does, has a good enough relationship with them to agree to send the cease & desist letter.

I understand your frustration, but you can aid the blog a bit if you do your research instead of stating things that are so patently wrong.

By the way, I AGREE WITH YOU that they should not have used the song. I'm just correcting your statements.

Hailkula,

John Fogerty doesn't own the rights to all those CCR Classics, but they are still his songs and that is how history will remember them - not who made the fortune bilking artists (probably a Republican) but who actually had the artistic integrity to compose the song.

Barracuda belongs to the WIlson sisters.

How does she know? Why won't Oprah have Palin on her show?

Why do liberal, well the lefties, women hate her?

Just a Wondering Republican Joo in the Barrio of Van Nuys.

PS. Women living in Manhattan, West LA or SF should hit Route 66 to find out what real women think.

Hi 12:09,

You are letting your emotions get in front of logic and the law.

OF COURSE IT'S "HEART'S SONG," and that's how people think of it. But we're talking about it as an asset. Each time the song is sold on Amazon.com, for example, the label gets most of the money because it paid "future money" to Heart 30 years ago.

I have some property in Manhattan Beach that I'd like to sell you.

When you take things like this personally, instead of thinking, the GOOD point you're trying to make gets lost.

Again, I think the GOP should have asked permission. But the truth is that they will only have to pay an ASCAP license fee.

Probably a few hundred dollars for the one-time arena event. But it is now #2 on the Amazon.com download.

I wonder if Heart will decline its share of the money.

Sarah Palin represents the values of American women????

Ronald Reagen in a skirt would hardly qualify as representative of the vast majority of women's views.

But that pregnant teenage daughter does strike the case for abstinence - the Republicans anti-choice option.

The husband leans over and asks his wife, 'Do you remember the first time we had sex together over fifty years ago? We went behind the village tavern where you leaned against the back fence and I made love to you.'
Yes, she says, 'I remember it well.'
OK,' he says, 'How about taking a stroll around there again and we can do it for old time's sake?'
Oh Jim, you old devil, that sounds like a crazy, but good idea!'
A police officer sitting in the next booth heard their conversation and, having a chuckle to himself, he thinks to himself, I've got to see these two old-timers having sex against a fence. I'll just keep an eye on them so there's no trouble. So he follows them.
The elderly couple walks haltingly along, leaning on each other for support aided by walking sticks. Finally, they get to the back of the tavern and make their way to the fence. The old lady lifts her skirt and the old man drops his trousers. As she leans against the fence, the old man moves in. Then suddenly they erupt into the most furious sex that the policeman has ever seen. This goes on for about ten minutes while both are making loud noises and moaning and screaming. Finally, they both collapse, panting on the ground.
The policeman is amazed. He thinks he has learned something about life and old age that he didn't know.
After about half an hour of lying on the ground recovering, the old couple struggle to their feet and put their clothes back on. The policeman, is still watching and thinks to himself, this is truly amazing, I've got to ask them what their secret is.
So, as the couple passes, he says to them,' Excuse me, but that was something else. You must've had a fantastic sex life together. Is there some sort of secret to this?'
Shaking, the old man is barely able to reply, 'Fifty years ago that wasn't an electric fence.

Postscript: We love you Valley Doll. Don't mind the asses.

Per the Wilson sisters, "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women"
Does that include the part about working hard, taking care of your family, that human life is precious, saluting the bravery and skill of the US Military, that you know what to do with your hard earned money more than the the government in Washington does? And also what does being a woman have to do with Sarah Palin's values? I thought those on the left claim that there is no difference between men and women. Are women subject to some other value system that non women are?

I have a headache.....

I don't like Jon STewart but I have to say his show on Palin is hilarious. He's one of the few that shows facts instead of just talking about her stupidity. Palin is a woman who attacked the media for talking about her family yet, used her pregnant daughter and redneck boyfriend on stage, held her down syndrome baby, the one she left only 3 days after giving birth and now her husband is taking a leave of absence to take care of the family. Gee, wonder what's wrong with this picture? Hillary has stated she will campaign hard for Obama. Do you really think she wants a "no experience, no vision, no leadership, small town woman getting into the spotlight when she has far more experience? I DON'T THINK SO.

Any woman who can shoot defenseless animals is a moron. Watch this video of Palin the shooter.
