Illegal Vending in Echo Park

This video is a few months old but incredible nonetheless. While the full weight of Los Angeles Police force is brought out to stop the Shaw Family from collecting signatures and giving out free hot dogs in Leimert Park, illegal vending continues for blocks in Echo Park, turning the local landmark into one continuous swap meet - with nary a Recreation and Parks nor LAPD officer in sight.

Now before someone says here you go again beating up on the Mexicans. It has nothing to do with race. I wouldn't care if it was a group of Slovokians, Thais and Belgians in the park selling used plumbing supplies on the grass. The question is where is the equal application of the law?

The City Atty, Roctard himself, suspended all code regarding illegal vendors.

THAT is why nothing is happening in Echo Park, peace officers currently have no legal code they can use to enforce specifically regarding vendors. (However, there's other ways to skin a cat, looking for parking violations and the like. )

That said, the fact that illegal vendor codes were suspended makes OPS's actions against the Shaws as a "raid on illegal vendors" very illegal itself.

Mr. Moore, you paying attention?

You should see Lincoln Heights on Thursdsays. This one buddist temple on Gates and Broadway has a private farmers market type event out on the public sidewalk!

BUT no one stops them!

I hate my community looking like a huge swap meet.

This circus developing around the Shaw family is beginning to disgust me. They lost a son. Now they've been enlisted by other people with their own agendas, whether it's ratings, a stupid mayoral candidacy or just plain old race baiting. There's a serious issue here that's plaguing the city. Reasonable people can work to find a solution. But this kid's tragic death has now disintegrated into a discussion about illegal swap meets. Sometimes I wish Al Gore never invented the internet. I was happier not knowing what my fellow citizen thought about everything.

If you think Al Gore INVENTED the internet, you have a lot to learn. Keep reading and learn what is really going on in this city.

The open borders advocates won't be happy until they've driven every legal resident out and turned Los Angeles into another Third Word toilet.

If Villaraigosa and his City Council cronies get reelected, I'll be definitely be making plans to move out-out-state.

I've lived in California for over 26 years but the good is now starting to outweigh the bad. Besides, I don't think my paycheck can stand another term of Schwarzenegger, Villaraigosa and Wendy Greuel.

12:40, a farmer's market is what Jan Perry should be organizing in her hood to make up for the lack of fresh produce or grocers she's upset about. Other than their spilling onto the sidewalk, if they're licensed the one at the Buddhist Temple sounds good for the community.

Anyone know of Slovakian and Thai swapmeets? Does the Buddhist temple have Thai stuff? They make nice wooden and metal bowls.

Michael, you meant to say that YOU aren't judging these people because of what race they are.

But clearly, Delgadillo, Villaraigosa, Alarcon, Huizar et al DO judge these people by their race. They don't mind these slummy, illegal swap meets on the streets since the people running them are the same race/ethnicity they are.

Yeah, yeah... nothing to do with race.

"I don't care if they're black, brown, purple, or polka-dotted. I just want the law obeyed."

In your own community, probably within spitting distance, I'll bet you there are dozens of illegal swap meets (called "yard sales") going on every weekend. There's a limit, under city law, you know.

And, I'll bet every one of them posts "sale" signs on public property to get you to come buy their ripped Levis and B&W TVs.

Have you ever called for a stop to that? Screamed at the city for allowing thousands of tacky "garage sale" signs to hang illegally off light poles on every corner.

Yeah, yeah. It has NOTHING to do with race. And I'm sure it has NOTHING to do with social status, or home ownership, either.

Pfahhhhh. and BeeeeeEssssss!

Let me know when you get interested in "equal appication" of righteous indignation, blowhard.

2:25 sounds retarded, shoots himself in the foot just like Walter Moore does from the opposite side. The two are equally matched.

Of course "it has everything to do with social status and homeownership" dummy. Only the lower classes lay their junky stuff out like that on the sidewalks, week after week. When a homeowner has an occasional tag sale, it's on private property and is often a way for the community to come together and meet. You very, very rarely see it at all in nicer areas and the few times I have, it's in a garage.

You've just scored a point for the OTHER side, that these lower class people have turned LA into a Third World city. Let's hurry and move them all to the Palisades and West Valley -- they could use some more "of this energy" there, thanks to the Inclusionary Zoning the Mexicans are so excited to push.

Having said that, I really don't care if this goes on in Echo Park, since these people sell that junk to each other and no one else goes there. But if there are neighbors who are upset and aren't tattoed hipsters who think it's cool, they should unite and complain. But when they want to spread this blight into "anglo" areas, you can bet there will be major battles.

Yeah, yeah. It has NOTHING to do with race. And I'm sure it has NOTHING to do with social status, or home ownership, either.

So, as long as you're a poor Latino, you get to use a PUBLIC PARK to sell whatever you want all weekend long, taking parking and lawn space away from PEOPLE WHO WANT TO USE THE PARK AS IT IS INTENDED?

What else should Poor Latinos be allowed to do to crap on the rest of us because they're not rich Anglos?

And why don't you let them use your lawn/garage?

And the idea that this, all day long, every weekend, in a PUBLIC PARK is in any way equivalent to posting a few signs for a one-time garage sale is absurd on its face.

Besides, nowadays everyone uses Craigslist instead of posting signs to advertise their Yard/garage Sales. Let the city crack down on that if we can eliminate this. It's a more than fair trade to preserve our parks.

Yeah, those are just yard sales, Michael. 300 illegal aliens, anchor babies in tow, all decided to have yard sales on the sidewalk at the same time on the same day in the same place, every weekend. What could be less unusual?

SEE, Higby, all someone have to do is push back a little bit with a NON-Latino comparison (also illegal, also ugly, also using public property), and your supporters came rushing out of the woodwork in quantity with their hoods bleached white, spouting racist and classist venom (on your behalf).

You may be a sterling example of someone who's "color blind" and class ambivalent -- let's say you are, just for the helluvit.

But notice how, at the first opening, your tag-alongs, Mayor Sam-wannabes and primary audience members get RIGHT to the color and social class verbiage the minute they step up to support you, from the first sentences.

You may indeed just be out for "equal justice", dead mayor.

And, you may just happen to be standing at the cross burning because you "like to see all the pretty lights" and smell the charred oak.

Uh huh.

But don't look now. While you were being so 1970s "some of my best friends are" upright non-racist, the rest of the attendees just put your name in for nomination as "Grand Wizard"

One gets the impression from your video that you may have had some trouble from the "vendors" and their supporters. It's good to see a journalist with the conviction to brave the detractors to deliver the story.

But then when you threatened to call the cops all that went away!

Sorry Higby while your solution is to record, document, and let the courts measure legality, mine is simpler and quicker involving a D8 Caterpillar and a couple of firehoses. Call it protaganism.

So if an illegal alien decided to have a yard sale at his house would I care?

No, not really. If they do it on their property it's their business. I guess if they're renting theoretically they should ask their landlord. And like anyone else they should probably follow the law in terms of how many yard sales they can have.

On the other hand the people in this video crapping up the park is unacceptable. People come to the park to enjoy it and it belongs to all people. They don't come to see plumbing parts all over the grass.

They can go to the East LA College or Pasadena City College swapmeet and buy a booth if they want to sell this crap. Or find a property owner willing to host them.

Again, people who are clueless posting. It wasn't LAPD at Leimert Park. They were Officers from General Services out of CITY HALL. They look like "real cops" so stop blaming LAPD for the raid. I called it that everyone was rushing to judgement without knowing all the facts like you all did. I believe the Shaw's are being used. I believe in their cause but in many many circles people who support them say they are being used for other's personal agendas and now I agree.

The idiot spewing "classist" garbage, equating it with racism, sounds like he was "educated" at Semillas del Pueblo on our dime.

Of course people buy into areas or not because of "class" and "wealth," estupidito. No one's spending millions to live in the middle of your sidewalk sales of garbage nor have your third world slums come and ruin their homes and property value. That's the way of the world, idoso, why your Mexican and Central American masters want your lower classes to leave their countries and just send money home.

Ever heard that what's important in real estate are 3 things: "location, location, location?" You think that means, areas with bunches of uneducated illegal immigrants who live like pigs? Or move them next to you? What makes your MEChA "leaders" pushing this garbage think everyone won't move away and leave you with no tax base at all?

Funny, Marxist Alarcon even tried to redistrict his fiancee's house so she could improve her property value and he's not living in an Echo Park slum. No, he insisted on keeping all the raise some members gave back because he needs it all to avoid these slums.

And all this "affordable housing" your MEChAs are pushing down the throats of hard-working people will also line their pockets with kickbacks from crooked developers... Push me and I'll name some of them and point the FBI to the money trail.

You can add to that, the THOUSANDS of real estate "open house" signs posted illegally on public sidewalks, traffic medians, planters, streets, parkways, offramps, etc. all over the city.

L.A. Municipal Code, Sect. 67.02. No exceptions/no exemptions, regardless of how short a time they're there.

And, I don't care what race or color the realtors are either! Or, how shiny their signs are.

Every one of those signs that's not in the yard of the home being sold, that the realtor doesn't have signed permission of the (private) property owner where its otherwise placed, or a permit from the city for display on public property is . . . 100% ILLEGAL.

Where is the equal application of the law (or is the real estate and development lobby too strong for that? Too rich? Too . . .?)

How many realtor buddies do you have at Jaycees, Mr. Higby? Have you ever once mentioned to any of them that they're part of a vast, illegal criminal conspiracy?

(Yes, a criminal conspiracy -- what else can you call it when EVERY member of the profession commits illegal acts several days a week, trains their new recruits to do the same, and tries to outdo each other with the size and placement of their tools of trade?)

Or do you just look the other way?

Together, they clutter and blight and limit access to 100-times more PUBLIC space on any given Sunday than all the illegal vendors in every park in the whole city?

What about it, Higby. Ever dabbled in it yourself? Worked in real estate or property management? Helped design new and bigger signs to be placed on PUBLIC property, in violation of several city laws?

Where does this trail of corruption and hypocrisy end? (Answer: It doesn't).

OR, do all the realtors in the SFV now only use Craiglist for their listings? HOOOOO, ha!

4:25 MEChA Marxist: Tell that crap to your Mexican wealthy fleeing the crime in Mexico to live in gated suburbs of San Diego and Del Mar (where they party all night and drive the local nuts too, with their ruining the peace and quiet, but not with your peasants that you're trying to force on the "anglos").

You can't lay your "racist classist" bullshit on them, they'll kick your nasty ass and those sidewalk junk vendors to the curb.

You should start by forcing Zorro Marxist Alarcon and TJ in the Hills Reyes, French 5-star hotel Nunez and the rest of the crooks into the crowded buildings full of peasants they want to force on Palisades.

It should be a prerequisite, that anyone who pushes laws to destroy other people's neighborhoods and upscale developers' profits MUST live in low-income housing himself, but pay what the unit would cost at full market rate.

With all the incendiary back-and-forth, I think most everyone missed what was a pretty good, but buried point.

We all just overlook the laws broken regularly by our own cultures and subculture, but tend to focus on the "scoff" laws that make us the most uncomfortable about other groups (illegal vendors in the park), for Mr. Higby, (illegal 'for sale' signs on poles and medians) for Mr. Anonymous.

Is one any not an actual violation of the law just because less of the majority culture is willing to look away?

No, but each makes the other more uncomfortable. We can't know that it is because of our cultural underpinnings. Accepting our own culture's "scoff" laws and seeing them as less important than the others is part of the fiber of our being and upbringing.

Lots of people say they illegal vendors are just trying to make a living. Bullshit!! They are ruining good neighborhoods cause they live like pigs. Their yards are trash and bring the sale of homes way down. These illegal vendors have a mob mentality. In certain areas when LAPD do their task force sweeps these idiots swarm them and start to cuss and verbally assault the officers. In one area these bastards actually got an attorney to try and stop the sweeps. THEY ARE BREAKING THE LAW. Latino friends have lost businesses cause these filthy, greedy, assholes refuse to abide by our laws. TAke a ride downtown and you would think you're in Iraq. It's too easy to start a farmer's market in LA to gain access to the city's sidewalk. Scholastic Gardens did it in Toluca Lake just by saying they were a non-profit, which wasn't and still isn't true, but no one apparently cared about that kind of thing at City Hall. It doesn't matter if its Echo Park or Toluca Lake. Farmer's Market = free rent!!
