The demise of Antigua Coffee House, A "Cut and Paste" Tribute

From "Pueblo de Sereno" the demise of the "PEOPLE'S COLLECTIVE COFFEE HOUSE" and it's forced relocation to the "ED REYES COLLECTIVE DENSITY ENCLAVE OF CD 1", is all the rage on Yahoo's NELA Group Site.

In the "bloggin spirit" of the CD 14 political bloggersphere, we like to present our "Cut and Paste" tribute to the collective meeting place on Huntington Drive.

But before we start our "Cut and Paste Tribute" we want to extend our best wishes to the collective owners as they take their collective enterprise to the dense enterprise, or is it socialistic zone of CD 1??

COMMENCING CUT AND PASTE TRIBUTE !!

July 03, 2006 11:42 PM

**Tuesday, June 27, 2006 – 6:30PMAntigua Cultural Coffee House4836 Huntington Drive SouthLos Angeles, CA 90032

In attendance: Committee Members: Jessie Granados, Hugo Garcia and Sadra Larsen. Community: Semillas Del Pueblo Representative: Marcos Aguilar1.

Call to Order: 6:35 PM Committee members agreed that public comment was welcomed, but would be limited to one minute. 2. Mr. Aguilar provided committee members with an update and review of the Academia Semillas Del Pueblo Charter School being under attack by negative media coverage. On May 31, and June 1, 2006, KABC Talk radio (owned by Disney) broadcasted that Semillas was teaching an Anti-American curriculum, as well as instilling racist beliefs in their schoolchildren. Semillas has a progressive multicultural curriculum that is approved by the state. The local television media also attacked the school by reporting the school had low test scores and only catered to Latino families. However, Semillas is able to refute all allegations as it serves children of all races in the community, in addition to helping children that might not have a chance to succeed. Semillas is at the forefront - ahead of other schools in addressing the need for schools to teach other enrichment languages such as Mandarin, as identified by the Department of Defense. The school is competitive with other schools in that area and can chart the progress of each student. Lastly, Semillas’ student body reflects the demographics of the local community it serves. However, due to the negative exposure, the school staff and student body came under attack. The school received racist/terrorist threats, which included bomb threats to the school and the children that attend the school. After the verbal update, Mr. Aguliar screened a video to committee members detailing the false accusations against Semillas as well as what he and the school, in fact, do. 3. The Social Justice committee agreed to and will request several Action Items at the next General Board Meeting on July 5, 2006, that would support: • The Semillas school has the right to exist• Semillas’ Multicultural curriculum• Positions against hate crimes and terrorist threats to staff and children of the Semillas SchoolThe Committee also is requesting that the neighborhood council support a call for a meeting involving Disney, the LA-32 Neighborhood Council Social Justice Committee, and Semillas to address our concerns. Other avenues covered were the need for LA-32 to develop a letter of support by the Corresponding Secretary. This letter would be distributed to local elected officials and LAUSD. Mr. Aguilar will provide the list of officials. Another recommendation is for board members to write their own letters of support to both elected officials and Disney.

The Committee invited Mr. Aguilar and the school community to attend the next General Board Meeting on July 5, 2006, to screen the Semillas CD and inform the board and stakeholders of what is happening at Semillas. On behalf of Semillas Mr. Aguilar agreed. Meeting ended at 8:00 pm Respectfully submitted by Sadra Larsen

Speaking of "DOH," Red Spot.

It's nice of you to cite a source for something like this, but how about - it's not really there?

There's absolutely nothing about this coffee shop or its demise on the Yahoo list you say it's "all the rage" on. I just checked. I wanted to see what else was being said. That group's posts are public.

Here's the link:

Nope, nothing, nada, zilch?

Are you pulling a fast one, Red Spot, or did you over-caffinate somewhere else?

Are you just making all this stuff up (I always suspected)?

If yes, take a time out and go sit in the corner. You're not by any measure the first poster on Mayor Sam's to fabricate evidence of something (that's how one got the name "Chief Faker"), but it's still a dirty trick.

I missed this announcement elsewhere -- too bad. This was a very cool, laid-back place to meet with people in ES and drink good brew . . . the type of community-building spot that we have too few of on the eastside.

Hopefully their soon-to-open Cypress Park store will provide the same opportunities for that community.

Subject: [ASNCAlert] Good Bye El Sereno

I have good news and bad news, I'll start with the bad. We are getting evicted or just simply not being granted a contract extension, why? The property owners have decided they rather lease the complex to "another" group. "You have made this place into a happy socialist center" - and I quote was one of the comments from the property team. On the bright side, at least we`re "Happy" and for the "socialist" part I think they mean social, community and culture.

Either way, after 6 months of negotiating and shady false promises, they have decided to move along with another tenant. Really, there is nothing we can
do but rant, kick and scream. I rather find solutions and respect the decision.

After all, Antigua Cultural Coffee House existed for 3 solid years and will resonate through Huntington Drive (Historic route 66) for the coming months,
memories of this great community establishment will rise and shine throughout the day and night. We became the spot, the place where students and community members escaped their daily routine and network with others. The home of hundreds of individuals who found a safe haven away from home. The perfect location to study and not fear being kick out by some maniac business owner,
instead it was the place where you were acknowledged and praise.

The organizing center for immigrant rights, resource center for community events, meeting place, campaign semi head quarters for progressive candidates.

Three student films where filmed on location and a pilot for HBO, LATV did a show here at Antigua! ... Google Antigua Coffee House you'll see our
accomplishments.

Poetry nights became comedy nights, somehow the dynamics intermingled to cause such an effect. The best darn gallery in El Sereno. The best and most
beautiful customer base ever!

Antigua Cultural Coffee house became a household name, it was a destination. We were voted "Best" by some of the most acclaimed news agencies in the
city, the envy of the West side, the pride and joy of the East side.

We are Antigua Cultural Coffee House. We should be incredibly proud of what we have built. We are the community leader of Specialty Coffee. And, believe
me when I tell you, we are just getting started.

We will overcome the difficult and humbling challenges we face, and will be stronger for it. You have my word on that.

We are the neighborhood entrepreneurial, we are the community service center, we are the conscious innovation, and we definitely reject the Status Quo.

We are the coffee that brings people together everyday to cultivate conversation and community. WE ARE. ANTIGUA CULTURAL COFFEE HOUSE.

On a bright note, the Cypress Park store will finally open in the summer....I' ll keep you posted on the date.

For the time being, our last weeks will be full of surprises and special guest musicians... Lets celebrate the final countdown... .we ask our
hardcore customers to enjoy our last days and to spread the news to others. Three weeks left.....

Red Face in Cd14:

That's not on the forum group you quoted (and is that "all the rage??")

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nelalist/

You didn't say ASNCalert, which is something else. Next time you quote the Times, should we search the OC Register to find it.

Post the link - because it's not on the NELA group you said it was on, Loser.

(How old is this Red poster guy - every moment is a Senior Moment. Must have been John McCain's babysitter in college).

John McCain needed a babysitter in college?

Don't let Obama's people get wind of that, they'll smear him.

Nope, Red Spot's critic is absolutely right. There's only one message about that place closing on the NELAlist, here http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nelalist/message/21295 and there's no responses to it, and no raging about it going away.

Should we be concerned about people inventing sources here? I heard this blog "quoted" on Kevin James night show earlier this week about the Sugarman thing. I'd hate to see him get fired again for believing posts here that don't exist.

WE MAY LOSE 'ANTIGUA COFFEE HOUSE' WHICH WAS GOOD WHILE IT LASTED. WE HAVE GAINED THE 'CYCLE WAY' ON MONTEREY ROAD, WHICH SEEMS TO REFLECT MORE OF THE NATURAL HISTORY OF A TRUE COMMUNITY BUSINESS.

I DON'T DRINK COFFEE, SO IT WILL NOT IMPACT ME MUCH, BUT AS A RESIDENT, MY VALUES ARE STILL HOLDING STRONG. STRONGER THAN THOSE PROMOTED BY THE NC REPRESENTATIVES THAT ARE NO LONGER ON THE NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL. I AM SURE THEY HAVE MORE CLEARER OBJECTIVES IN RUNNING A BUSINESS, I DO IT TO ACTUALLY SHOW WHAT I AM ALL ABOUT, DIRECTLY TO THE COMMUNITY.

On no, Antigua gone? But now where will Huizar's local staff go to have private planning meetings with the Semillas Academy people out of site of other constituents' coming to the nearby El Sereno office?

Coffee beans at any other local shop are probably picked by oppressed peoples whose land was stolen from them.

3:25, that's the same old tired song-and-dance we've heard for years, illegals protesting, "This land used to belong to us and you stole it from us!"

No, illegals, WE didn't steal it from you - your government stole it from you and sold it to OUR government! OUR government then sold it to us. I suggest that illegals demand an accounting from the Mexican government, and find out who in their government stole the money which rightfully belonged to the citizens of Mexico!

Sure, this land used to belong to them... but they also used to be babies in diapers. Do they want to go back to being babies in diapers?

Dude, regardless of your position on this, that's one of teh WORST comparison's I've ever read.

Don't bother trying out for the debate squad at City College, okay!
