Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Wednesday

It has been said that whenever County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky is considering running for a new office he loses weight and gets in shape. The LA Times follows Zev's new regimen and shows him looking quite fit. Check out the differences in the photos from a year ago and now. Well, there's lot more homeowner groups to barnstorm!

Red County reports that the LA City Council plans to "go to war" with State Senator George Runner. Wednesday, the Council will consider a resolution to oppose Runner's Safe Neighborhoods Act on the November ballot that will eliminate bail for criminal illegal aliens and stiffens penalties for gang involved crimes. If you favor this measure, call your City Council member and tell them you expect them to be tough on crime. Tell your friends to do the same. Doesn't the City Council have more pressing issues than to be passing resolutions against ballot measures?

LA County Supervisor Mike Antonovich has gone on record as opposing the County's needle exchange program. These programs - in which intravenous drug addicts receive "clean needles" for old - are intended to slow the spread of diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis. However, studies have shown in city after city these programs do not achieve their stated purpose and actually increase drug use.

This might be an opportunity for the Westside White Guy. As a cost cutting move, The Former Fishwrap of Record is no longer going to produce it's own Sunday supplement magazine and turn production over to it's Los Angeles Times Media Group. However if they really want to cut corners how about making it the analog fishwrap version of OBSERVING (WEST) LA AND HIS LIFE AND (LA ANTONIA) TIMES? Maybe there's a Pulitzer in there somewhere?

He's filled many times more potholes but Mayor Villaraigosa joined with potential opponent Magic Johnson to announce the filling of the 10,000th job by a city program the Mayor has championed. According to reports, the 10,000th job was filled at a Vons Market.

The 10,000th job was filled at a Von's market???

How is Villaraigosa going to have time for his day job?

Seriously, folks. Don't believe this propaganda figure. We all know the Mayor's office plays fast & furious with stats.

Higby:

Stating an article from over a decade ago about HIV/AIDS and needle sharing is like running an article about the benefits/problems with eggs from back then.

Try to find a more recent article.

Zev must be pumping some iron, too. Looks pretty toned. But he'd be crazy to give up his Supe job, when he can keep that for years -- look how hard Bernie and Ridley-Thomas are battling, how much they're spending. Those jobs are where the power is at, and you get a bully pulpit with little scrutiny.

Good role model for middle aged guys, though. On how to battle the bulge.

But not to be mean here, but what about that wife of his? She seems like a nice lady, but if he's concerned with image and weight control, she's not on board.

Zev doesn't give up or lose anything if he runs for Mayor.

He's term limited out as Supe in 2014 assuming he runs and is re-elected in 2010.

So he can run for Mayor in 2009 and not have to give up his County Supe seat.

Worst case scenario for Zev is that he runs for Mayor in 09, wins and loses relection in 13. He's out of office only one year earlier than if he were supervisor.

On the other hand were he to get elected mayor and then be reelected then he adds three more years of a job over being Supe (retires in 17 instead of 10).

Even if he lost (say narrowly) to Tony Villar, he sets himself up as the frontruner for 2013 which means he could be in office until 2021, giving him nearly 50 years in office at age 73.

This assumes two things:

1. That Zev wants to be mayor. It's hard to figure why any supervisor would want to be mayor.

2. That he's willing to go through the backbreaking work of raising enough money and putting on a tough campaign. He's never been in a tough campaign.

The problem is that An-phony-o has been exposed. Once the true facts of his 4 years as Mayor is laid bare for all to see, he's a done deal.

However, the people of Los Angeles, will be voting and only God knows what's going to happen, LOL

If Zev could touch his nose to his knees, I'd consider voting for him.
