De La Torre Goes After "Corrupt" Politicians
The California Assembly has passed Assembly Bill 2092, authored by Assemblymember Hector De La Torre (D-South Gate) that would prohibit persons convicted of corruption from being elected to public office. De La Torre says that the bill closes a loophole that allows individuals convicted of various crimes involving corruption and fraudulence to hold political office after the conviction.
In a document provided to the Sister City by the office of De La Torre, he cites two individuals as examples for his law, former Mayor Sam blogger and Assembly candidate Jim Alger and former Bell Gardens councilwoman Linda Luz Guevara as two individuals previously convicted of perjury who would be ineligible to hold office in California under the legislation, despite the fact their records were later expunged.
In related news, Sister City Blogger Edward Headington told me that De La Torre "received an award from the Pat Brown Institute last week (the Public Servant of the Year Award) and spoke about his efforts to root out corrupt public officials."

Exactly WHAT perjury did Alger co fmmit? Having his "crime" be put on a similar footing to that of the chick from the projects, is absurd.
Sounds like DA Cooley, who's behind this, has it in for Alger for some reason.
Curious, cuz Cooley LOVES to say he's out of any local or county politics. Yeah, sure -- he's kissing ass to State Attorney Brown who's allegedly running for Gove -- boy, those LInda Ronstadt days aren't hurting you at all, unlike most with ultra-lib wives.

Never again for Martin "Luther" Ludlow

Good one Red Spot. Where is Martin Ludlow these days? You know he helped Antonio during his mayoral campaign so I'm sure there has been payback somewhere. Where did AV put him?

De La Torre would have a field day with our LA politicans.
This show how ignornant Alarcon really is. He'd rather have the gang violence then complain about it as he's nothing but a crybaby.
....The town-hall meeting was called by Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alarcón after complaints from Sylmar residents who fear that the injunction will cause property values to fall.
Alarcon said Wednesday that he wanted to learn more about the injunction, which he said he was not aware of until the request for the court order was made.
The councilman could not say whether he is for or against it at this point, but he questioned the way prosecutors depicted Sylmar in their injunction request, filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court.

Was Tony Villar ever convicted for his "indiscrections"?
Time to throw this useless bum out!!

Good job De La Torre. Wish Alarcon was convicted in that FBI sting years ago. Wish Villaraigosa was convicted of rape, as the old lady alleged. Wish Huizar was convicted of using LAUSD funds to buy his familial property. Wish Molina was convicted of using MTA funds to benefit her cronies.
SO close!!! We could be rid of so many dinosaurs.
As for Alger, is it a crime to be cheesy?

What about the corrupt politicians who have NOT been convicted of corruption???? That would include the entire gang of 15 plus ONE!

It's silly to say Cooley even knows who Alger is.

I found this on Mayor Sam:
Jim Alger's court records are researchable docuements. He was convicted of felony perjury. His appeal was denied. He had the record expunged. That is a pardon for a crime not a declaration of innocence. He served 90 days County time and was required to undergo psychiatric couseling by the sentencing judge. That part, the psych counseling, was removed from the sentence by another judge that had not seen him before but agreed that it was not related to committing fraud and removed it. Alger is required to inform any employers of his crime as a part of the expungement. Felony perjury is the only crime that can prevent you from running for office unless it is expunged, which Jim Alger did in 2005.

Who cares about Alger or the lady from Bell? Those are small potatoes! I don't care about people lying on voter forms.
If Cooley is going to waste his time on wannabe politicians then this is no good. He has to go after the big time corruption in LA. Don't worry about phony voter registrations until you have Villaraigosa behind bars!

Jim Alger's MySpace page says that he's a Senator, and shows him with a picture next to an American flag, as if he were in office. No kidding, his name is listed as "Sen. Jim Alger!"
Must help to mislead the 18-year-olds from Idaho.

Who do you think is behind the big time corruption in L.A.? It takes a village. Guevara,Escareno,Beltran,Richards,Chacon,Robles,Alger, that guy Alvarez thats been in the news, all are responsible for a Villaraigosa or someone like him.
Good job De la Torre, just stay away from those water guys.

The Council of Neighborhood Councils no longer use the term Senator.
Mayor Sam said:
What term do they use?
Mayor Sam said:
It does seem to me that Alger or Guevara are not the best examples of who this law would apply to; obviously Ludlow or Beltra are representative of real corruption and not petty stuff or even technical mistakes.
However when the De La Torre office sent over the press release about AB 2093 I asked them to provide me examples of politicians this might apply to (as well as any potential loopholes). Alger and Guevara was want they sent back; the entire document prepared and sent by his staff is over at Mayor Sam 2.

Mayor Villa put through the rule that convicted felons do not have to put that record on their job applications. This was so Villa's people could pass the job requirements. If the other law gets passed does Villa have to quit? He was convicted.....

Higby is lie when he says Jim Alger was convicted of a crime. That spin he created with Hilfenhaus and Waldman after Alger left the blog.

Anyone convicted of perjury, including Alger and Guevara, should never be allowed to hold public office. Usually in perjury cases the person has lied after having sworn to tell the truth. Alger compounded his crime by describing the incident as an innocuous error! To get a conviction for perjury the D.A. has to establish criminal intent by the suspect.
