Open Thread for Wednesday

Gas prices have hit $4 a gallon and there's no end in site. The cost of oil has shot up, we're competing with developing nations and refinery capacity is down. The high cost of fuel is causing the prices of basic necessities to skyrocket. How should California's political leaders deal with the issue?

This is not a problem for California's political leaders. The State pays for their cars and fuel.

I hope that the price goes to $6 and higher. It will help push the illegals out the door.

If gas prices surge, it will become harder to live here. For most of us who have the time to sit here and share our comments, we can make it work. We can get a new car with better mileage. You know it's true: all of us can get cars to make absorbing even much higher gas prices livable.

But the illegals can't afford to do this, or to pay the higher gas prices.

Thus they will start going home.

That's the great thing about surging gas prices: even Villaraigosa, Huizar, Cardenas, Alarcon, et al, can't make them come down.

Burn baby, burn.

What's more irritating, hearing somebody say that they want gas prices to keep going up, or seeing that exact post pasted in multiple threads?

8:01, I am just being sure that this one UNIQUE sentiment is echoed once.

Too bad that you haven't a response to the CONTENT of my comment.

$6 gas will be the great equalizer for Southern California. If you can't afford it, here's an idea: go home to Ohio, Mexico, China, or wherever else you came from.

MARKET FORCES, KID. Market forces.

Nice argument style, 9:40am.

"Back" is L.A., and probably a lot longer than you've been here "KID,"
but that's not really relevant to the analysis and outcome predicted.

12:02, please explain what you mean by "back." I didn't use that word in my last comment.

As for the kid thing, it's an expression. Don't start getting offended at inoffensive things. It's like saying "good luck Chuck."

Dig? Hope so. $6 / gallon, baby. That's where it's at, and I've got no sympathy for anyone who can't hack it. Get a hybrid. They're cheap enough now. Can't afford that? Then think about getting a better career.

Dig for oil in Anwar. The environmmental laws are tying our hands. We also need to be making more fuel efficient vehicles. When some cars (Hummers) get only 10 to 15 miles per gallon, it's pathetic. If we have the technology to fit 10,000 songs onto an IPod, we should have the technological know how about having more fuel efficient vehicles or vehicles that run on something other than oil. Someone even suggested a vehicle that runs on an IPod size battery that's good for 500 miles per charge.

Another idea I have is a lot of products have stopped using cane sugar and instead use corn syrup to sweeten their products. Let's go back to using cane sugar. This will help the sugar cane crop and then use the corn to produce ethanol. We can also stop feeding cows corn and feed them grass like they used to eat, which made meat healthier than it now is. There are those who raise grass fed cattle without hormones. These two moves would make us healthier and hopefully reduce our reliance on foreign oil.
