Court Issues Ruling Favorable To Providence Holy Cross Medical Center

The nuns may continue their mission of mercy. From the SFV Business Journal:

"Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Thomas I. McKnew dismissed a suit filed by a citizens group challenging an expansion at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center.

Community Advocates for Responsible Expansion at Holy Cross objected to the city’s decision to approve the hospital’s $146 million expansion project because no environmental impact report had been conducted, though one was not legally required."

The strange bedfellows NIMBY/union challenged the Sisters of Providence who wish to expand the hospital to provide much needed trauma care. With a number of local hospitals having closed; PHCMC found itself having to sometimes treat patients in the hallways. The new project, which has already broken ground, will make better use of the hospital's space to treat the sick and injured.

Strange how much depends on the whims of a judge in our system of government. This one used common sense, but many don't. L A CityBeat reports that just like the judge who ruled in favor of an EIR for the O-P Plan, some judge with vision also opposed Diamond Lanes back in the 70's as a potential traffic CREATOR, and demanded one too.

Let's see, if something makes traffic move faster and that reduces smog and cut-throughs onto side streets, how does some judge believe a bunch of NIMBYs who argue traffic will be increased?

Like teachers, judges should be allowed to be removed if they prove to be incompetent or stupid. I love the way Boston Legal plays with this idea, showing judges who are downright senile but there's nothing the lawyers can do about it.

Glad this hospital will go through, despite the heated opposition of Alarcon, swayed by the unions. BUT he ripped Smith's head off for opposing a 5000-home Las Lomas, and Alarcon is intent on building a facility in Northridge with HIS name on it, and HIS union workers.

I live in the neighborhood and I don't want any more condos I suppose that makes me a NIMBEE.

I still support the hospital though. I don't get these self-appointed doo-gooders. How the hell could you oppose a hospital? Is it a toxic waste or nuclear dump? No.

The opposition seemed to be led by a union that wasn't cut into the deal, with Alarcon supporting them. AND there are always people who oppose anything.

Actually, all we wanted was an EIR which would have proven that the facility needs a parking structure.

They spent millions opposing that because they don't want to pay for the structure.

This is a serious problem and shouldn't be ignored.

Why don't you people go away? Don't you have lives? EIR? WHO CARES?!?!?

Uh yeah, we have lives but unfortunately we can't live them very well because of all those Holy Cross employees who are parking in front of our houses because they have no place to park. If Providence would build a parking structure, they would have a place to park.

Now they're going 5 miles west to Porter Ranch and 5 miles north to Santa Clarita all while you sit around whining about there not being any hospitals.

Providence Holy Cross, the most lucrative non-profit hospital in the nation. They are very for-profit.

So we do have lives and EIR's are part of them. Bore you?

The people who live in this neighborhood couldn't tell the difference between and MND and EIR if their lives depended on it. All the impacts from this hospital were mitigated and EIR would of done absolutely nothing but delay the project so that the unions could strong arm the hospital. There would of been no difference between what an EIR's traffic section would of looked like and the MND's traffic section would of looked like.

Some people hear EIR and think that it must automatically be better than an MND.

Some projects are so large that they need an EIR, but for small projects like this one there would of been no difference. An EIR would of studied the impacts of not building the project but that is about all in a project of this size.

Las Lomas on the other hand does need a full EIR because there is no way a project with 5000 homes cannot have an impact on the environment. Just the oak trees that are going to be cut down and the land that is going to be razed justifies an EIR. This isn't even taking into account the traffic this project will cause.

But, you can't compare Las Lomas to this hospital expansion. I am glad a smart judge who understands the law well, ruled in the hospital's favor.

The life that this hospital saves could be my own. I just don't get how someone can be opposed to this project. Even NIMBYs. This is going to help all of us who live in the area.
