New High Tech Parking Meters Coming?
The City of LA's parking meters for the most part operate on 1930s technology and the Department of Transportation is looking to replace them. And of course, lobbyists for parking meter companies are chomping at the bit and are in a bit of lather about the Department's plan to follow a process to allow them to procure meters in a more streamlined and cost efficient way as opposed to the usual bid process.
One type of system under consideration is one that allows the parker to use cash or a debit or credit card to purchase a parking pass as opposed to dropping a coin in a meter. That makes a lot more sense.
Though the Clowncil members are addicted to the additional revenue the meters bring in, this old, dead Republican mayor is of the mind that most meters should be pulled out. Many cities such as Burbank have found that the meters deter commerce and collection of sales taxes. Remember, most shopping centers do not have parking meters - street side merchants should not have to compete with this.

Wait a minute there, Sam. The merchants who do not have parking lots also do not have parking lot maintenence fees to pay to their landlords, ergo, they can compete with "free parking". It is free to the customer, but not the shopping center merchant. And, the smaller they are, the more they pay, because the big boys negotiate smaller contributions.
So, if a street merchant wants to offer free parking to his customers, all he needs to do is put some quarters in a bowl at the entrance.
Credit cards would simplify the meter problem, which costs us extra if we keep quarters in the car and have them stolen by parking lot attendents on a regular basis.

The city council wants both illegals and high-tech parking meters? You can have one or the other, but not both. Someone needs to tell them that.

To get traffic moving, we should eliminate street parking on certain key streets, and switch instead to parking structures. That would effectively increase the number of streets available to commuters.
Here's your homework assignment: during your travels this week, take note of how many times you're stuck in slow traffic while two lanes of the street you're on are occupied by parked cars.

Noticing oddly enough that parking,~~~~> (directly/indirectly) does play a role on the impact of traffic. I would say that the revenue from these meters may be substantial, and warrant demand, use them.
Several of the thoughts that came to mind are;
1) If these are truely going to be of service and vision for the future, will these pieces of modern technological equipment run on solar energy?
2) How will it impact the 'credit card' industry? They charge fees... to park for 45 minutes for a total of .50 cents, you will effectivly be paying $3.00, the majority of which is including the $2.50 (transaction) fee.
3) Traffic is a major concern, as polled by Rose Hills Review, it is the greatest priority in Los Angeles over 'severe street conditions' & 'gangs'<~~~(word will be obsolete). I will address an option to eliminate -(traffic at another time) Generating revenue and also creating a safer transportation system to drive on.(Oh yea, and much less traffic)
4) Is this the next step in creating a lifestyle where ($$$$) money, in our current state will no longer exist? Looks like a change to the digital era is already upon our daly reliance, even for 'FREE PARKING'.... does that make 'cents.
