Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Monday

We've been calling it for a while but now its official. Wendy Greuel is running for City Controller in 09. This sets in motion a whole domino effect for not yet elected School Board member Tamar Galatzan to run for Greuel's seat and perhaps former candidate and Galatzan supporter Louis Pugliese to take over the last two years of Galatzan's seat. Of course, along the way Galatzan still needs to beat incumbent school board member Jon Lauritzen and hope that rumors that a "big name" is considering a run for the Second District Council seat. We won't say who "he" is, but lets just say its a name that some may "embrace" (if he he doesn't embrace you first).

Hug your way to more juicy items by clicking read more.

The Denver Post profiles LA power player and Staples Center owner, Phil Anschutz, who made his original fortune in the mile high city but has shifted his focus to an entertainment-political empire in Los Angeles.

Brady Westwater is calling
on Los Angeles' Neighborhood Councils to demand the reforms necessary to keep Los Angeles' tony hillsides and multi-million dollar homes to keep from burning in coming wildfires.

The City's budget cuts plan to downsize two city attorneys who focus on Neighborhood Council issues; City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo has made an impassioned plea to keep them.

The DWP is claiming that Denver based contractor CH2M overbilled the utility by $3.3 million for dust cleanup in the Owens Valley. A company official denies the overbilling, saying audits down by City Controller Laura Chick's office were flawed.

If it's a street, you must retreat. Despite the fact he got OJ Simpson off for allegedly murdering his wife and her friend, the Los Angeles City Council has renamed a section of 17th Street as Johnnie Cochran Vista.

We usually figure NIMBYs to be mostly humorless; a group of them in West Hollywood has proven this point. LA Voice reports that a group of opponents to a real estate project in West Hollywood kind of embarrassed themselves distributing an anti-development treatise. The piece in question was actually a tounge-in-cheek piece developed by a team including the project's land use attorney. D'oh! Lets hope Joe B. never makes a mistake like that!

Remember to vote for us in the Bloggers' Choice awards. We're nominated in categories here and here and here.

Univision is using it's muscle to get Latino immigrants to become citizens and then register to vote. Immigration officials say they've seen a spike in applications since the program began.

Expect State of California websites to become more uniform soon. Capitol Weekly reports that come November all state agencies, commissions and departments to follow the same design templates.

John Benoit is a Republican California Assmeblyman from Palm Desert. Seven years ago he was a California Highway Patrol officer who pulled over a then 19 year old Paris Hilton for allegedly driving at about 125 miles an hour. Via Capitol Weekly.

The State of California and some yahoo in West Hollywood have nothing better to do than to sue Pinkberry. The issue at hand is whether or not the immensely popular frozen dessert is yogurt or not.

Pope Benedict is on a tear and planning to excommunicate Catholic politicians in Mexico and elsewhere who support abortion rights. LAist wonders if Mayor Villaraigosa is on the Pope's radar.

Mayor Villaraigosa says that lawsuits stemming from the May 1 Pro-Illegal Alien rallies will cost the city millions. Ya think?

The LA Times endorses the Mayor's candidates for the LA School board in Tuesday's elections. In the meantime, incumbent member Jon Lauritzen and the Mayor's delegate Tamar Galatzan were working hard over the weekend to get those last minute votes. The Daily News reports that supporters of Mayor Villaraigosa have donated nearly $2 million to Galatzans's campaign.

Mary Alice Cisneros, the wife of former Mayor Henry Cisneros - the former boss of Councilmember Wendy Greuel - was elected last week to the San Antonio City Council.

The Boston Globe reports that Los Angeles has joined several other cities installing public toilets in the urban village but they don't flush.

Was Mayor Sam blogger Zuma Dogg's father a Venice bohemian who got his picture taken at a City Hall protest in 1965? City Nerd found a picture that might suggest such.

Watsonville has named itself an illegal alien sanctuary, but pro-open border activists in the Northern California town take the view that sanctuary is not the right term as "the land was stolen from us."

What affordable housing crisis? Local Realtor Chris Hain has written a book detailing programs that will help buyers purchase a home.

Father Boyle was at the proceedings in support of the attacker because HE IS A COUNSELOR AT HOMEBOY INDUSTRIES. This happened at the MeCha school Academia Semeila school. I'm guessing Mayor Sam will NOT be a contributor to the Walter Moore campaign for mayor.

The way I read it, MS is on record speaking out against authorities 'forcing' us to do things ( light bulbs for instance)
whereas Moore advocates mandatory neutering etc, and a police state to enforce all the laws that MS is vehemently opposed to.

am I right?

I had to delete the original of the following because the long ass link was screwing up the formatting. So I took out the link and re-pasted. You can go to LA Observed to read the story he is talking about:

I'm sure Villaraigosa is hoping no one in LA reads this article about him in New Yorker. Boy, does it lay him out.

http://www.laobserved.com

....The next morning, Corina phoned friends, asking if they had any idea where Antonio was. She learned that he had left town for a few days with the wife of one of their close friends.

Villaraigosa’s supporters were outraged. The Macho Dogs held a meeting; some wanted their money back, and there was talk of recalling him. Many were appalled at his recklessness. He had run as a family man, sending out pictures of himself with Corina and their two small children. (He also has two older daughters, whom he helps support, from relationships before he was married.) Initially, Villaraigosa defended his actions, saying, “It is a matter of the heart.” He eventually acknowledged his error. That did not help much with many people, including his wife, who remained estranged from him for two and a half years. “He was a pariah,” [Sen. Gilbert] Cedillo told me....

Perhaps no supporter was more upset than Gloria Molina. “It was a mix of anger and unbelievable disappointment, because we had worked so hard,” she said. And she felt that Villaraigosa had betrayed a public as well as a private trust. “I so value these positions,” Molina, who is now a county

Kiwi Fruit,

I will be contributing financially and otherwise to Walter's campaign.

I do happen to disagree with his forced sterlization of animals, but he's not the only one proposing it. However, its not big enough of an issue for me to be a dealbraker when Walter is right 100% on the major issues.

Walter and I also disagree somewhat on zoning issues. Maybe its because he's a homeowner and I am not, so I don't get it.

Bottom line is that Mayor Sam is somewhat more libertarian than Walter on certain issues and we have to agree to disagree.

However, it's pretty inconsistent for a guy who fashions himself as some kind of freedom fighter to be in favor of forced usage of light bulbs and government mandated cutting off your pet's cajones. Or does your cry for freedom only extend to longhairs who sell incense?

In regards to the "HIS POLLONESS" proflie. First "WWG" highlighting this expose in the New Yorker is an attempt to get the Los Angeles Magazine to allow him to right a "PUFF REBUTTAL" to the piece. Second, After read the part how our Mayor schedule his "TOUR DE MEXICO Y CENTRAL AMERICA", So that he would not be in the city for the May 1 rallies, is a perfect example how he earned the moniker "POLLORAIGOSA".

CAN ANYONE CONTROL THE PRICE OF [GGGGGGGGGGAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSS] ???

The Austin paper indicated that prices could go as high as $4 per gallon later this year....read on

DON'T PUMP GAS ON MAY 15TH!!

In April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

On May 15th 2007, all Internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.

There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the Internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.

If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies' pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

If you agree, resend this to all of your contact list. With it saying, ''Don't pump gas on May 15th"

I'LL BE PARTICIPATING..HOPE ALL OF YOU SEE THE IMPORTANCE AND DO THE SAME!

In contrast to the mayors of cities like New York and Chicago, the mayor of Los Angeles has little structural power. But Villaraigosa set grand, and sometimes grandiose, goals. Building a subway to the sea. Planting a million trees across the city and reducing air pollution at the huge port. Fighting crime. Alleviating traffic congestion. Paving roads. Achieving twenty-per-cent reliance on renewable energy by 2010. (When I asked a Villaraigosa adviser how the Mayor had decided upon this energy goal, he explained, “The state said it would achieve twenty per cent by 2017, so he said, ‘We’ll do it by 2010!’ It’s very ambitious. Moving the Department of Water and Power is like moving the Titanic.”) Villaraigosa appointed new people—many of whom were very talented—to government jobs, and assigned these issues to them. But he wanted a signature initiative, and he decided to seek mayoral control of the public-school system, the second-largest in the country. Explaining his mission to friends, he has said, “When I look at these kids, I see myself.”

Now I don't know about any of you , but there are a lot of hints in that New Yorker article of some sort of personality disorder or mild mental illness.

For instance , the part above describes his attempts at LAUSD takeover as grandiose. Grandiosity can be found in bipolar illness esp, when one is manic.

The other example is the part where they say he grabbed someones tie and began to tighten it , etc etc.

This is a reference to passive aggressive behaviors, accusations or insinuations of not being loyal , indicative of narcisitic behavior or anti-social behavior. Speaking about his fathers abuse of his mother and subsequent abandonment by his father and then naming his new son Tony could all be construed as trying to insinuate the mayor suffers from some sort of borderline personality disorder that almost gives you the picture of a crime boss...

As far as I am concerned the piece in the NEW Yorker is aimed at destroying the Mayors Credibility in the east and midwest and try to take out a big latino ally of one of the presidential candidates. Basically showing stereotype of the macho latino male with big ideas. You know, a throw back to the impresarios of mexico. This is not an objective piece at all. This is being used to scare the easterners into believing the mayor is a rabid lunatic , a loco. A mexcian who has bitten off more than he can chew.

This is basically an early hit piece to try and take out a potential heavy artillery piece that can be used by one of the democratic candidates , or even make them think twice of having him as a running mate.

I can only guess who's camp is doing this.....this article is pure fantasia....

that is in regards to ethics violations. In closing, maybe the Ethics Comm., as part of a settlement, should force "HIS POLLONESS" to reinstate the College Fund that Elsa Lopez and the "Mothers Of East L.A." had ruin by the "POLLONISTA MACHINE".

I want to know why now did the New Yorker put out this hit piece? Its one of the most damaging stories on Villaraigosa yet. Far more damaging then the Tony Castro.

The only CM who could have written that letter in support of Ramon Flores was Huizar. Could that be public record so we can all read what it says? Again, these liberal Latinos support criminals and the hell with legal law abiding citizens. If Father Boyle was involved in supporting this criminals I bet Antonio also may have sent a letter of support.

this is not about local politics. Understand where the new yorker is published , who reads it, and the big issue of immigration being one of the biggest issues in the presidential election. Put this in it's context.

Villaraigosa is on the larger seen now, in the past he hasn't had to have his dirty laundry thrown out all over the country , that is until now. HE wants to be on the big porch with the big dogs , wait until they start picking him from end to end and if any such incidents , other than the campaign money scandal is mentioned , it will be new stuff we haven't heard about.

Presidential campaigns have bigger war chests than city council or mayoral chests. So far they have thrown out stuff and rumors we hear all of the time . The insinuations of making subtle threats, colleagues now speaking out about him having a vindictive attitude , these might be reinforced, only because his chickens may be coming home to roost. But bigger bombs may be coming.

One of the things that these people will be looking at isn't campaign violations , they are looking for instability in his character.

The article compares him to Bill Clinton in certain aspects , but they also compare him to a hotheaded angry kid who was abandoned by his father and has created his own reality of his past....they are alluding to disociation...

They are trying to take him down...

And the racist stereotypes are in the article , ever so subtle.

I came from East Texas, I went to a high School at the time that was over 95% caucasian , I know from whence I speak. They are portraying him as still being a troubled teenager and latino at that, who might cause problems and scandal, Of course , putting aside the usual political shenanigan's, this is a hit piece and an early one at that.

But people have been bought. People bigger than those he could count on here in this State. We are going to see more and more of these articles from all over the country , scrutinizing this man. I mean the mujeriego part was also insinuated. This can cause division between Hillary and Antonio or at least get her to distance herself from him .

Come on man.... Obama is appealing because he led a sheltered lily white suburban spoon fed life , Antonio is seen as the old struggles in a bottle , and the white folks on the East Coast and the midwest and South , really don't want that sort of thing thrown in their faces, and this because of Hollywood and the way East Los Angeles is portrayed in the movies , all the new yorker is doing is trying to set the stage to scare those folks with Antonio and scare them about him. What I read is they are saying is that it is not time for a latino to be in such a high position..Crap my family is from South Texas , where I saw big latino politicians all of the time..look at the mess with Gonzales as attorney general , these are my 2nd cousins. I am not impressed with latino politicians , In other words they want to move on over there , while we struggle with racial issues everyday ,and the immigration issue and MAY 1 did not help at all.

Its interesting that our local media protected Antonio during the mayoral race and reporters have said they knew about a lot of AV's baggage but their editors told them to not write about it. National media is a lot different. They will dig deep and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Too many loose lips in LA Antonio has burned. Why isn't LA reporters especially LA Times nailing Antonio on the lie that he and Corina are not separated? Everyone knows they are. NO one has seen her out with him in a very very long time. His womanizing will also come out. Insiders in city hall are saying there's some wounded victims inside and around his office.

For those who wish, I would take the time to Goggle "THE NEW YORKER", and go on to their web site. You can read the whole article. This reporter did a great job (UNLIKE THE "LA ANTONIA TIMES"), in getting quotes and developing a time line/ historical context of Villar's Political Evolution. It is sad that our "FISH WRAPS OF RECORD/DECEIT", the "LA ANTONIA TIMES" and the "MOLDY GREEN SHEET" have fallen for the Mayor's commitment to reform education. In regards to the "OLD GREY HAG ON SPRING STREET", they have alot to answer for in their endevers to see Villar elected Mayor (remember their hit pieces on Pacheco and Hahn ?).

MayorSam, kudos on a well-written and insightful post. You really are head and shoulders above the rest of the contributors here (no slam on them, just a nod to you) and the blogs in LA. This piece had everything that draws people here, namely discussions of purported insider stuff on local races.

I think the rumor that Bob Hertzberg is running for CD2 is false. He's telling donors he runs for City Attorney. I don't think Jack Weiss scares Bob. I think Bob has Westside and Eastside support. I think Bob out-charismas Jack. I think Bob views council as a step down.

I think Tamar Galatzan runs. I think she loses. I think Cindy Montanez runs, I think she loses. I think Ken Gerston (sp.?) runs, and he loses.

Sunland-Tujunga is a parochial, semi-conservative place. So are Sherman Oaks and the NoHo hills. I think the eventual winner has yet to emerge, but is not on the list so far.
