Wednesday Blog Bits

The County of LA is giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to arts related organizations locally. Some of these funds are being used for youth internships, which in and of themselves are great opportunities for young people. However, public funds should not be used to support the arts. There is significant private money available for the arts and public money is 1) typically wasted and 2) encourages less than excellent art to propagate itself. Let those artists and arts organizations who are truly excellent gain funding from businesses and individuals who wish to support them. Read more about it at Mayor Sam 2.

Also at Mayor Sam 2: Don Knabe going after deadbeat parents, The Transit Coalition e-newsletter, Hatin' on Small Cities and one of those annoying LA County closed session class action lawsuit items (does anyone have details on this case?)

Zach Behrens can't e-mail Greig Smith.

Scribes at Martini Republic has an excellent market-based solution to the housing shortage.

So much for no public funds for the Olympics. GamesBids.com reports the LA City Council has approved a $250 million guarantee for the games.

Actually, your post about LAIST.com is outdated.

We can't e-mail Greig Smith*
In our attempt to have City Council offices get LAist added to their press release lists, we have found another City Council e-mail address defunct. Enter councilman Greig Smith, the man with one of the best City Council websites (maybe not in design, but an aggressively updated one, unlike other council websites).

After failing to communicate with Tom LaBonge, a similar problem now exists with Smith. Unreported on LAist, this exact same thing happened on January 3rd of this year; reserving the notion that it could be a glitch, we shelved the idea of Round 3 until last night when we needed to e-mail Smith again. We clicked "E-mail Council District 12" on the contact page and wrote an e-mail. Within minutes, a reply:

The message that you sent was undeliverable to the following:

Smith (UNUSED)

*UPDATE 4/3/07: The problem has been solved. The junk mail filter was set to block Gmail emails. Greig Smith and Google have now kissed and made up.
