Irony Illustrated: Assimilation and Spanish-Language Newspapers
The following two sentences from an article in the L.A. Times tell the whole story, don't they? Read 'em and weep -- or and laugh, your call:"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's off-the-cuff comments in recently released audio recordings about illegal immigration and the unwillingness of Mexicans to assimilate into American society have drawn angry responses this week from Latino community and political leaders.

"If Spanish-language newspapers and radio are any guide, others were angered as well. The headline on one La Opinion piece this week: 'Governor attacks Mexicans.'"
Yeah. How dare he claim they aren't assimilating! Man, if they had bothered to learn to speak English, they'd really tell him off!

If anything is ever described as a "community" in the MSM you can be sure the writer or speaker is trying to convince you that they are a victim.
Yup, unbelievable. Can you imagine the reaction of these whiny so-called "Latino leaders," if Gov. Steroids had the audacity to state that people who sneak across the border, steal identities, and routinely violate other laws both minor and serious should be deported back to their country of origin.

The "VICTO LATINO LOBBY" (thanks 5:55 for the idea). Will try to shame the "KENNEDY REPUBLICAN" into funding more entitlements for non-citizens. Nice to see the "CARPETBAGGER" de Leon get some print in the "LA ANTONIA TIMES" over his mock outrage over the remarks recorded in "ZEE BUNKER". HEY CARPETBAGGER !!, what about showing some emotion over the gang problem in your Assembly district. But I guess you are still digesting the local Thomas Guide. BTW, to the "VICTO LATINOS", baseball star Albert Pujos just past his citizen test with a 100% score. Why are you Mechistonistas work on your study guides and stop crying over the truism uttered by the "KENNEDY REPUBLICAN ??

Well, the governor's comment was "I tried. . .the Mexicans they don't try [to learn English, assimilate]". The comment shares the same fault with Fred Gaines' comments re historical overlay zone: (1) makes categorical assumptions about someone's conduct, attitudes, status as social predator/victim by ethnicity; and (2) the kind of comment one makes to ingratiate oneself with racists.
I take the governor at his word when he apologizes. He knows that there are many "Mexicans" trying extremely hard to assimilate, just take a peek in any evening adult education English instruction class. And he knows that these folks are succeeding despite cuts in funding for such language training.
