Rick Orlov writing in the Daily News reviews the trials and tribulations of Mayor Villaraigosa in 2006. Bottom line - after a gushy honeymoon upon taking office the welcome began to wear thin - Orlov says "Villaraigosa's frenetic public pace and wide-ranging reforms - including raising wages, hiking trash fees and hiring more cops - have begun to prickle critics who say the mayor must start turning promises into actions." With the new year comes new laws that take effect as of today (mostly). Among the legislative changes are a higher minimum wage, a law that allows gay and/or unmarried senior citizen couples to file join tax returns and legislation that mandates that bags of cat litter sold in the state must include a message asking people not to dispose of the litter in toilets, gutters or storm drains. One law passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor that will not be taking effect: Mayor Villaraigosa's LAUSD takeover plan which was ruled unconstitutional by the courts.
Martini Republic opted for reruns of Seinfeld over KTLA's coverage of the Tournament of Roses parade. Why? Because of the shabby treatement of legendary parade host Stephanie Edwards. Edwards a broadcasting legend was shunted to the streets last year and wasn't even included this year with the station preferring the younger host of their daily morning program, Michaela Pereira. One thing I discovered this year - a great tool for watching the parade is my Time Warner Cable Moxi (similar to a TiVo) . Skip past the horses and bands and just look at the floats. Wonderful!
LA still doesn't have a grand new year's eve celebration like that of Times Square in New York. We had a really lame millenium celebration in 2000 and perhaps we're still smarting from that. And for those of you downtown boosters who think LA Live is going to be the West Coast's version of Times Square put down your vodka - it's not the same thing. However, LA's network of local neighborhoods continue to do their own thing: Here in Van Nuys has the story of a grand old new year's eve celebration in Lake Balboa. (By the way, it was the same thing one year ago today.)
A boy born two minutes after midnight on New Year's Day at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in West Los Angeles might have been the first baby born in Los Angeles County in 2007 Orlander Wyatt Jr., weighed in at 6 pounds and 5 ounces. What may be the county's first twins of 2007 were born at 7:53 a.m. and 8:06 a.m. Monday morning at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Panorama City according to a hospital spokesperson.

2007 will be the year of the great depression in LA! Housing prices are tanking and the will collapse. Foreclosures are at a 40 year high...mostly from the fraudulent illegal market. Illegals just pack up and leave in the middle of the nite, change their names, and get new ID's. Then they start the scams all over again!
I work for a major national real estate co. and I can tell you first hand that it's worse than anything you read in the paper.
LA is finished! Tony Villar, Eli Broad and their partners in crime are rushing the clock to line their personal pockets and Villar's campaign coffers BEFORE the crash. They are depending on the illegals to do all the purchasing. Mexico is now earmarking all the money for matricular cards from the 47 mexican consulates in the US for ILLEGALS to purchase homes in the US. The money used to go to Mexico but now it's going to help the illegals put a down payment on homes in the US.
We need the economy to tank in CA., otherwise the illegals will never go home. When they can't find a job or afford to live here...they will go back to Mexico where they belong. And then we can lock the door.
The schools will be bankrupt, the real estate mkt. will tank, and big business is moving out of LA.

Ah ha...Now ZD sees the bigger picture as to why the mayor and city council have been running a condo-conversion scheme throughout L.A. (See ZD Happy New Year story below.)
So mayor's number one goal is to keep property values up...and you do that through condo-conversions, even if not necessary. But at what cost to the cultural and socio-economic balance of the community.
So, ZD's question to the smart people who read Mayor Sam (and spin ZD)...Is it the job of the mayor (tony or the next one) to simply look at property values as the single focus of the City, at all other costs? If someone can sell me on that one...ZD's #1 issue gets seriously diffused...

Wish you Happy New Year. So May 17th, will be a date forever embedded in my life, as that was the day that I got to witness a progressive change in Los Angeles that has already begun to send waves throughout the country. I got to witness a movement that had begun many years ago, lead by many people and organizations, towards the ultimate goal of knowing and believing that this great country in which we live in holds true to the principle that we're all created equal. I got to witness Antonio Villaraigosa be elected the new Mayor of Los Angeles... and I can go on from this point knowing that I played a role in that taking place.
However important that victory may be for the Latino community in the United States, I'd prefer to see it as a milestone within this country in the universal struggle for promoting the belief that we can all achieve our goals, that the only obstacles that prevent us from succeeding in life are those that we place on ourselves. Knowing the struggles that my parents had to make in order for me to have the education and the experiences that I have today, I can take further joy from the fact that my nephew can become the Mayor of Los Angeles, or Governor, or President, or anything that he wants to be.
I've talked to some people who have been on this Earth for many years, and they all remember historic moments that they witnessed. Whether it was being in Washington DC for the "I have a dream" speech or seeing on television Neil Armstrong take the first steps of many on our moon, they all say that those are moments in the lives which will never leave them. For me, this is my moment in time.
Now the real work begins, and I'm proud to say that I am there to get it started.

2007 January 1st city council members got another raise that pushed their annual salary to $171,648. Their numerous perks include a car, free gas, cell phone and excellent health benefits.
Didn't someone say we could recall these salaries with a ballot measure, is that true???
LA city council is a joke; the more incompetent they are the higher their salaries go. Hopefully Hernandez will succesfully lead the effort in 2007 to overturn the fraud called Prop R.
I wish Mayor Antonio Villagrossa and Los Angeles City Council could make a New Year's resolution to be just a little bit greedy, and put something back into the community. (They use the City as a cash cow to fill their coffers with special interest/construction money.)
Point is, you can no longer get away with the things politicians used to get away with. They are still gonna financially benefit by being in their elected seats...but damn, doggs...Chill on the shadiness, just a little (maybe about 20%), and things will work out.

Working with federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents, more than 400 police officers from throughout the Inland region served 43 search warrants on suspected Mexican Mafia and gang members early Tuesday.

Villaraigosa has decisively rejected ANY possibility of addressing the out of control gang problem by citywide injunctions, or deporting gang members, or pushing for Mexico to extradite criminals, or push for more police, or much of anything. He's in the pocket of both felons with wealthy fathers and the ACLU, which prefers the rights of organized criminals to gather than the right of ordinary people in gang infested areas not to be shot. Antonio's personal history of carrying water for politically influential felons, softness on drug traffickers or child murderers guarantees an out of control crime rate. If anything his long history of penny ante corruption (the Florida Gift Shop scandal) shows that he can be bought cheaply.
Other polticians are crooks too, but at least they require serious money like Eli Broad or other connected developers. Since these guys require a crime rate under control for things like Staples Center to make money, others can be expected to at least react to crime waves which are already gathering force. Villaraigosa won't even do THAT.
People are keeping their kids home from LA schools because of Black/Latino riots. Gangs are killing fourteen year olds who refuse to join with impunity. MS-13 rules Pico-Union. Violence is spreading and it won't be contained just in poor areas, Westwood, Downtown, Venice/Santa Monica, Hollywood, Culver City, and the Valley/North Hollywood will see it's share of innocent people killed by gangs if Villaraigosa is elected.
Villaraigosa has made it clear his number 1 priority is spoils politics and helping his Westside Liberal ACLU backers over crime control. "Hug a thug" hasn't worked, and all it will take for the city to further slide down the tubes economically is for the perception that it's a war zone to take hold (that perception is the truth in South Central, East LA, parts of Venice, Westlake, Pico-Union, and other areas).
Villaraigosa is a disaster waiting to happen.
The day after he announced the plan, Hahn told reporters that Villaraigosa "took the side of the gang members" in a 1992 lawsuit that challenged a law banning gangs from a San Fernando city park. Villaraigosa was the sole plaintiff in the suit, which raised civil liberties issues similar to those raised in gang injunction cases.
At the time, Villaraigosa was vice president of the Southern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, which has challenged a number of California gang injunctions and remains one of the chief critics of the tactic.
Gang members engage in drive-by shootings, murder, murder for hire, rape, extortion, arms trafficking, carjacking, and auto theft. The gang maintains an arsenal of automatic weapons including Tech 9s, Mac 10s, Mac 11s, and AK-47s. Many of these weapons are used to protect the gang's top activity - international drug trafficking. Al Valdez, a Southern California district attorney investigator, says: "Intelligence indicates that 18th Street has established ties with the Mexican and Colombian drug cartels, which has impacted the Southwest border states in particular. Because of the large amount of drugs which 18th Street distributes and sells, the gang also has ties to the Mexican Mafia prison gang and many black street gangs."
Investigators have no information that the Mexican Mafia prison gang was behind the attack, or that it was meant to precipitate a race war in the prison system, Hargrove said. Wardens across the state were told to monitor activities closely, but only Chino was locked down.

Seven members of the Barrio Aztecas prison gang were indicted for capital murder in connection with the jail slaying of a Mexican Mafia prison gang member. The prison officer said Porras and Romero have been in the state prison system. Porras is on parole after being sent to prison for six years for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and Romero was sent to prison under shock probation for 180 days for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was released last year. The intelligence officer said prison authorities haven't identified Porras and Romero as prison gang members. In an unusual match-up, Los Angeles City Councilman Tony Cardenas will face four challengers, including three candidates from the Van Nuys Neighborhood Council, in the March 6 election.
Friends and fellow neighborhood council members Lisa Martellaro-Palmer, James Cordaro and Candido Marez have all qualified for the ballot. Probation Officer Eric Dwight Rothenay of Arleta is also in the race.
Though they didn't plan to enter the race together, Cordaro and Marez said they hope the Van Nuys activists can pull enough votes to force a runoff with incumbent Cardenas.
While it's not the first time neighborhood council activists have campaigned against City Council incumbents, it is rare to have three candidates from one panel in a single race.
"This will be a history-making event if the neighborhood councils unify and support members within a neighborhood council program," Cordaro said.
"In the event a neighborhood council member is able to knock off an incumbent City Council member, it will turn the (City Council) upside down. It will make the rest of City Council members pay attention and listen to neighborhood councils."
Challengers say Cardenas hasn't frequented community events or neighborhood council meetings, and is slow to deal with day-to-day quality-of-life issues like speed bumps or trash bins.
"People feel neglected," said Martellaro-Palmer, who is an engineer and first-time candidate.
"Right now, a lot of decisions are made without neighborhood councils, without community members and then the community has to accept them."

As for the stuff about LudLow -- i like ludlow, i worked on his campaign (i do not collect a paycheck from mr ludlow either) but i will say this, anyone that thinks this strike was settled because of only mr ludlows work is sorely wrong. As for me not mentioning him, i was merely pointing out what the LA Times wrote about the strike settlement and how THIS DUM DUM MAYOR had nothing to do with it.
As for the other mayoral campaigns trying to figure out who i am, let them -- they should be trying to trick...i mean convince voters their guy is number one, as opposed to wasting time on me. But if they ever open their fridge and see some cold cuts, they can rest assure that i am listening.

I really thought MEAT was simply a poltical junkie. But now it's clear he is spinning for Antonio. MEAT said a long time ago that he got his information from the newspapers and some well placed calls. It's quite clear that he has been intentionally misleading us all this time and now I do believe he works for Antonio after all. What a fraud!

3) Was your prom a night to remember?
Prom was funny, crazy, and definitely memorable. Having had a large group, the limo took forever to make the turns by my house to pick us all up. We partied it up, went to the beach after prom, got drunk, dropped everybody off, got some grub at al Gallo Giro, and then ended the night with Stuart, Victor and I taking a group pic at the Dorothy Chandler like at 6 am. And to think, I just got back from partying with them at Moose's. Hermanos por vida...

During Junior and Senior years, I would walk with Maria to and from school because she lived on the way to school. Ahhhhh, best of times, worst of times...

Your BEST memories:
I'd have to say that it was the day we had the Senior Picnic afterschool, and right before Grad Night when La Pandilla took a group pic (yes, I still have it). It's an extension of high school, but last year at Ms Berges' retirement party (yeah, she left), I bought a round of beers for Chacon, Caceres, and myself. That was truly memorable.
Where did you graduate from and what year?
The Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet Senior High School. Don't playa hate, it was all about '98!
