Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Wednesday

Welcome back from your long holiday weekend! We here at the Sister City have been busy bringing you various stories from around town, here are a few you might have missed over the holiday:

LANC Chair Elections - Senator Brady Westwater
LANC Chair Elections - Senator Charley Mimms
City Council run rumors?
NC's Seeking independence, leadership
Some Support You Don't Want
Wendy Greuel for AD 40?
LAUSD Funnies

Following the Fourth of July celebration, a story about the desecration of military heritage comes along. It appears that a $4 million project at the West LA Veterans' Center - The Veterans Memorial Gateway Plaza - will feature a wall with the words "Beauty - Honor - Country." This a play on the words once uttered by General Douglas MacArthur, "Duty, honor, country" and which has served has a rallying cry for servicemen everywhere. 47th Assembly District candidate, Jeffers MacArthur Dodge, is rallying the troops to prevent this atrocity.

The latest wrinkle in the illegal immigration saga concerns a report about day laborers who are offered and paid to provide one job some Americans may not want to do. That is, having paid sex with male customers. In one survey, 38% of the day laborers report having been propositioned and 10% say they've accepted. Of those who have done the deed, 86% say they are not gay or bisexual. Apparently, the corner of Kester and Oxnard in Van Nuys is ground zero for this type of activity. (Hat tip to LA Voice.)

Councilman Eric Garcetti introduces us to his selection to the Neighborhood Council Review Commission, Altagracia Perez.

"Video" Louis Elovitz, a longtime community activist, cinematographer and a local fixture on the internet since the dial up days, has introduced a new blog. Elovitz has been hosting the "Punk Rock Saved My Life" blog, his latest project is "St. NoHo," which stands for Sunland-Tujunga North Hollywood. Elovitz grew up in North Hollywood, lived in Sunland-Tujunga for nearly 30 years and is now back in NoHo. The blog will cover items of interest to the two very different but connected (by Council District 2 of course) communities.
We recently reported that the Six Flags corporation is planning and selling its two parks in Santa Clartia - Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor - and that one plan could call for tearing down the parks and redeveloping the land. Turns out a whole bunch of folks in the area are against this, including 38th District Assemblyman-Elect Cameron Smythe. The concerns noted are valid, but its going to be tough given how valuable the land is and how much housing is needed. An ideal option would be a mixed property of single family, multi-family (condos), retail and commercial/industria. However, the demand for commerical property in the area is nowhere near that of residential.

Superman a Jew? Alan E. Oirich writing at Aish.com makes a good case for it.

How about using eminent domain to turn Six Flags into a park? Or perhaps a farm to replace the one downtown? Elephant sanctuary? All three?

Since Magic Mountain is next to the Valencia industrial park, it would be best recycled as an employment center. Santa Clarita has enough new housing on the way, it needs more jobs. If some of the new residents can commute across town rather than down the 5, it would benefit everyone.

p.s. The farm was in South Central, not Downtown, hence the name South Central Farm.
