Dirty Dealing at the Fire Commission?
Fire Commission President Dalila Sotelo has been charged by a subordinate of creating a "hostile work environment" within the commission and its staff.Normally, within the Fire Department, such grievances would come before Sotelo and her commission. However, the question arises as to if Sotelo is the supervisor in this workplace harrassment case, then who is to adjudicate the matter?
Much handwringing has gone on behind the scenes at the Commission, as Sotelo and some of her fellow board members would like to quietly resolve the matter. Indeed, we've been privvy to information that could suggest an effort was under way to keep the matter from the attention of Fire Department Chief William Bamattre and possibly, Mayor Villaraigosa.

You betcha -- the same journo referenced in the story linked here reported a couple of times in past years on how Sotelo interfered with neighborhood council elections in Eagle Rock, when she was past-president, re-interpreting what "live, work, and own property" means case-by-case, based on whether she, personally "approved" of the stakeholder who wanted to run for office or vote there.

As an Eagle Rock resident who truly tries to give some time and effort back to the community, I must say I am not shocked at this story (and thanks, Mayor Sam for disseminating it. Where would LA political news be without you?)
Back to Dalilah. She routinely took petty squabbles to the level of a federal case. She was so transparent, everyone sensed she was just biding her time before running for office. She didn't give a rat's behind about the community, just this eery need to dominate people, especially good looking men and other women.
Her rise mystified us. Her collapse shocks none.

Dalila is one of the most hardworking, hands on, and most visible President of the Fire Commission that I have seen in a long time. Since Joe Sanchez was appointed first Latino on this Commission. I don't think staff is used to this type of Commission involvement. Most are used to sitting on their behind all day.

News Flash! There's a lot of angry people out here! More than one of us has been treated poorly by this woman, and there are more of us who have been on the receiving end then you might like to realize. I would tell it her to her face, but someone already beat me to it....the person who filed the complaint. You GO girl! As for the mayor, what do you expect? He gives his blessing to all sorts of losers from Commissioners to candidates to crooked campaign contributors. At least if Sotelo falls hard, she's got more bounce to the ounce.
Sadly, I have seen Dalila in action at meetings. She is antagonistic, hostile and yes very angry inside and it comes through. Women don't have to behave in this manner to get their message across. She's definitely an Antonio groupie and snitch. Yes, the poster is right on the money stating that all of Antonio's snitches and groupies are very bitter, vindictive women who don't have a life or a man. These women would get a lot more accomplished if they changed that bitterness into acts of kindness. They are very mean to people. Even city council members last Friday slammed Lisa Sarno about DONE. She came off arrogant, snooty and a total bitch.
It looks like from all these comments Tom Topping has been off his medication.
I have worked closely with many non-profits in northeast LA and therefore it has been my honor to work on numerous projects with Dalila. I find the negative comments posted here offensive, sexist, inappropriately personal and shocking. Dalila cares deeply for her community and dedicates a huge amount of time to helping others. To get things done in the City (which I also must do daily) you need to light fires (pardon the expression) under people. Dalila is doing a tough, tough job. The community should be thanking her not convicting of wrongdoing without facts or her side of the story. Personal attacks of this sort are a disgrace and only reflect badly on the writer.
What an amazing group of negative comments! If people are known by their enemies, Sotelo must be doing a great job. Promote her.
I am attatched to the Eagle Rock Community and am a proud friend to Dalila Sotelo. She is one of the most amazing people. You bloggers talk about how she is angry and antagonistic. OMG, government service? Antagonistic!! What are you guys doing on a blog anyway? Why not try and help the community instead of regging on somebody else?
And these comments are unfair and unneccesary. Calling someone a tub of lard? Laughing at being single? How many of you computer freakazoids are married and as strong as she is. If anything is big about Dalila, it is her big heart and thoughtful mind, even if you disagree.

Why don't we discuss the weak civil servant that cries foul when asked to perform to thier job standards. That has become the bane of city managers everywhere. Managers attempting to move the city forward are constantly threatened with a harassment complaints by their non-performing personnel.

You have no idea what it's like to work for someone who is not familiar with City process. I don't know Dalila but I do know many commissioners who come into the city like a hurricane expecting to everyone to jump at their whim. The City does not function like that. For one, there is no budget to do projects that get pulled out of someone's ass. For two, there are other factors that must be met before a process can be changed or implemented. Three, a city employee should be treated with respect and dignity not with contempt, rudeness and disrespect. Civil servants cry foul when they are asked to do jobs that are above their classification because there's a salary scale and job description for which their salary is based. Civil servants are not your maid, your mail carrier, not your food provider, not your brain nor are we here to make you, the commissioner look good. That's your job. We are here to do a job and work for the best interest of the people, our constituents. Most of us don't have time to look at Mayor Sam during work hours because we are bombarded and overwhelmed with work from our top level management without consideration of the stress and overload they are putting on us Civil Servants. The Mayor increased his budget but continues to maintain the same staffing levels in City departments. How are we suppose to function with this type of stress and do our job accurately when we are being spread so thin? On another note, maybe the Mayor should consider putting qualified people in these commission posts and forgo the payback to those that supported his campaign. Believe me when I say it's getting ridiculous in the City seeing relatives, compadres, high donors, primos and friends of the Mayor throughout the City. The City is going to Shit and I see it getting worse. We are top heavey and need more working bees. The current politics and lack of support from upstairs is hurting civil servants and the public.
Anyone who can't hang with the City's structure and the civil servants should go back to private industry before they are forced to eat humble pie.

Thank god people are finally getting the word out about her. She has a real talent for masking her true nature in a performance of corporate doublespeak. She only cares about being top dog. She cares not one whit about anything other than her own climb to the top and will bury anyone who threatens to outshine her in any way with an avalanche of bureaucratic mumbo-jumbo and vicious personal attacks. Anyone who observed her actions on the neighborhood council will be able to verify it for the truth it is. That she is trying to squelch this complaint by effectively ruling on it by herself proves she has no understanding of the concept of public service and even less about treating people with the respect and reverence she literally demands for herself.
Sotelo has the infamous "run it or ruin it" mentality we've seen a zillion times in pols. Her glossy, smiling veneer hides a controlling, passive-aggressive manipulator who can not work with people without constant conflict. It surrounds her! But in a public setting, these characteristics will come to light little by little and won't be tolerated like their are in other parts of life. Sotelo is not good for politics in this city. She's made some friends, sure, but has made a LOT of enemies and left a bad taste in the mouths of almost everyone she's worked with over time, and that's really saying something. I am sure that Dalila has given more time and skill to the Northeast community than most you who are resorting to personal attacks and sexist remarks. Please reread your comments and decide if they reflect on the writer or the subject. In other words: look in the mirror. You all should remember that no one knows the facts and this is still a country where you are innocent until proven guilty.
Too bad people don't know the Dalila that I know. She is hard working when hardworking is not rewarded. She takes a job seriously and comes prepared to use every brain cell to get things done. Leadership is not trying to be liked by everyone, it is having the strength to do what is right and best despite the barbs of others. Anyone who attends the Fire Commission meetings and other FD meetings has seen firsthand Ms. Sotelo is the right person to head up the Fire Commission. She is intelligent, articulate, and steps up to the plate for the rank and file. She works hard as a commissioner(volunteer), and expects her staff to do the same (paid). It's no surprise that some people want her out. She is an LAFD member that has the good of the Department and City at heart - not her own interests. That's a rough road to trod when your a regular on the 18th floor!
Keep up the good work! Mayor, don't let anybody prevent her from doing the great job she's doing! The rank and file respect her, just ask them.
