Sentence, Schmentence - Memorial Day Open Thread

Whatever you think you learned about the criminal justice system in school was wrong.

Sentencing is NOT determined by a judge. Rather, the Sheriff, having caught the criminals in the first place, gets to decide how long to keep them in jail.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the "Sheriff's Department has routinely forced women, prostitutes arrested in Compton and certain gang members to serve more time than others convicted of identical crimes."

How much more time? The paper reports, "people convicted of prostitution in areas served by the sheriff's Compton and Century stations are required to serve 100% of their sentences, while those convicted of prostitution in the rest of the county serve 10%."

Blog away, but take a minute to remember those whom you're supposed to remember today.

That's what happens when you get a court clerk (deputy) that wins a race against a dead man (campaign run by Parke Skelton) to run the largest Sheirffs department in the country. Anyone who knows Leroy from the days he wore a hair piece know that he was a big joke. Wait til the lawsuits come in.

Villaraigosa Opposes English as National Language

Steve Marshall Reporting
KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO

LOS ANGELES, CA (KNX) -- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has come out against the idea of making English the official national language of the U.S. The proposal has been attached as an amendment to the federal immigration bill.

Villagrigosa says if the measure is strictly enforced, it could result in creating communications problems between people who provide emergency services and those receiving them.

The amendment states, "Unless specifically stated in applicable law, no person has a right, entitlement, or claim to have the government of the United States or any of its officials or representatives act, communicate, perform or provide services, or provide materials in any language other than English.''

The mayor appeared on CNN's "Late Edition" with Wolf Blitzer, offering his support for most of the provisions of the immigration bill adopted last week by the U.S. Senate.

"Well, what it means is you won't be able to communicate with people for badly needed services," said Villaraigosa. "They could be emergency services. They could be services for medical care.''

He also took note of the fact that the Senate has made no provisions to assist immigrants in learning English.

They didn't allocate money so people can learn English. I can tell you that, here in Los Angeles, there are lines, thousands of people waiting to learn English in our adult schools,'' he said.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Sunday he doesn't believe the amendment would negate any current laws.

SENOR ALCALDE

WHY DO YOU DEMAND SENATE TO APPROPRIATE FUNDS FOR ENGLISH COURSES?

LONG LINES? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

LAST TIME I CHECKED CLASSES WERE HALF EMPTY IN YOUR CITY!!!!!!!!

IT IS THE RESPONSIBLITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL TO LEARN ENGLISH AND PAY FOR CLASSES OR YOU CAN FUND THEM OUT OF THE CITY SURPLUS.

Runner Starts ''Great Californian Boycott'' Against Vicente Fox (Local News)
Topic: Breaking News
Assemblywoman may suffer official reprimand for actions

Assemblywoman Sharon Runner (R - Lancaster) announced today that she is opposed to an address before a joint session of the California State Legislature today by Mexican President Vicente Fox. Fox, who is on a three-day lobbying tour of three Western U.S. states, was invited to address the joint session by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez (D-Los Angeles) and Senate Speaker Pro tem Don Perata (D-Oakland). The Joint Session of the Legislature is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday May 24, 2006 on the Assembly Floor.

"I believe it is wrong for the California State Legislature to give this platform to a foreign head of state whose policies and corrupt government institutions pose a threat to the social, economic and security interests of the people of the United States," Runner said. "I will not be attending President Fox's address because I do not believe that his Administration has done enough to enforce our nation's mutual border laws and because his country continues to harbor and protect California fugitives from prosecution in the U.S."

"President Fox has a history of non-cooperation with American officials on immigration issues at both state and federal levels," Runner continued. "Unfortunately, I am not surprised that the liberal majority in Sacramento would give President Fox this type of platform in California that puts him on equal footing with our Governor or our President. I would be open to discussion with President Fox if he were coming to explain his country's backward policies and offer some resolution and compromise to the California people. However, that is clearly not the case." The Assembly Rules Committee is requiring all members to be present for the joint session. Missing the session without permission could subject Assemblywoman Runner to official reprimand by majority leaders. "This is one of those issues I feel that passionate about," Runner explained. "I do not want to give credibility to the liberal majority's acceptance of illegal immigration and Mexico's official policies urging its citizens to break the law and come to the United States illegally." "I think the California Legislature's liberal majority is confused, bending over backwards to support Mexico and illegal immigrants," Runner continued. "I was elected by the citizens of my district and that is where I will be this evening, serving the people of the 36th Assembly District."

11:48 Sharon Runner is absolutely correct. Good for her.

11:40 MAV...well, what can you say. He shows his true colors once again: red, white and green. He may be the media darling now, but he is delusional if he thinks he can fool the majority of US citizens.

Why should it surprise anyone Antonio wouldn't want illegals to speak English most of them our in our city. Nothing more frustrating then going into a store and the person can't speak English. He's showing his ignorance. He wants LA to become a sanctuary for illegals. His spanish is the worst I've heard. Maybe he should take more classes.

Frijole Boy doesn't even know that English is the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE of California!

I can't stand to listen to him....his accent is so horrible. He always says "Al A" instead of "El A" (Los Angeles). His speech patterns keep changing...it's hysterical! Now he has this new thing....a "sing-song" cadence. He's trying to sound American...it will never work.

Back to the topic....the only ones who need to serve the entire sentence are the Mexicans....95% of all felons in LA are Mexican.

And after they serve their sentences they need to be deported.

And AV needs to be deported with them.

Recall AV!!!!!!!!!!!
Now!!!!!!!!!!!

Vote American!!!!!!!!!!

I'll answer.

1. They can't. They want him.

2. Many years ago, but they reconciled the problem.

3. No, he didn't steal from taxpayers.

4. Yes, he's lied to many. (all in the name of "politics")

5. Probably. I can't say for sure. If I were a betting person, I would say yes. What politician doesn't??

Can't believe the previous poster has left himself open for attacks on that one.

1. YES Antonio cheated on his wife not once, not twice, not three times, a hell of a lot more and continues to this day. Their marriage is for show only. She wants a divorce but has been convinced it wouldn'be good for AV so for the sake of the kids she's hanging in.
2. Yes he LIED ask anyone in CD14 who was present when he ran for council and PROMISED not to run for mayor.
3. YES he has taken taxpayer money. If Pacheco isn't a wimp then he will find out during the discovery phase of his investigation while representing Janet Humphries that Ludlow and Antonio used Union money during campaigns. However, some people say Pacheco doesn't have the guts to state the truth and he will be bought off.
