Open Thread for The Weekend

Mexican President Vicente Fox met with Cardinal Roger Mahony Friday in advance of a planned visit with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to discuss tourism and trade -- but not immigration.

An issue related to immigration -- border security -- came up during Fox's meeting with Mahony at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. `He said this is not just an issue for the United States,'' Mahony told reporters. ``It is an issue for us, because along the border there is a tremendous amount of crime. There are criminals going across. There are drug traffickers. There are a lot of problems, so he himself is very concerned about a secure border.''

Villaraigosa said he would not raise the issue of illegal immigration with Fox because it is outside his control.

Here's why Americans thinkg journalists are assholes: In his blog today, Sacramento Bee reporter Dan Weintraub said he doesn't get why some people have a problem with Vicente Fox. He thinks he's doing a hell of a job, WAY better than anyone in Mexico's past. He goes on to say illegals help the US economy. He prattled off more insanity but that was all I could stomach.

Someone should point out to that "reporter" - a term used VERY loosely for this moron - that most people have a problme with Fox because he is spends more time on efforts to get his citizens to break the law by coming here, than he does on doing something wacky like - I don't know - creating jobs..? Weintraub should use the Internet to check up on some of the really neat stuff his hero Fox has done like deny jobs to non-Mexicans, refuse to open up oil production, denying non-citizens to own land, insulting the United States for acting in its own interests by throwing around terms like "Berlin Wall" and "denial of rights" when it's a well-known fact he allows racism in his own country - forget about not getting a job if you're black, how about not getting a job because you're too BROWN?? - and most recently he decided it would be a swell idea to allow hard drugs to be sold right up close & personal on our border.

Danny the Imbecile should also stop believing all the liberal crap about illegals helping our economy. They will NEVER make up in a lifetime of paying taxes - if indeed they ever end up paying taxes - what they cost in social services, especially medical care, schooling and - increasingly - law enforcement.

Add to that the culture they bring here is one intended to ruin the American culture - refusing to speak or write English, having multiple children despite their inability to feed or house even one, the "macho" culture that still exists in Mexico that says women exist to service men. Of course Danny lives in lovely Sacramento, he has no clue what it's like to live in a place that deteriorates year after year. He probably enjoys hiring the odd illegal here & there for mowing his lawn or washing his car and enjoys that he can pay them what he used to pay a white guy in 1990.

Vicente Fox is an enemy of the US and a traitor to Mexico. He does nothing to help the poorest of his citizens except send them HERE to take everything we have built. How the hell is Mexico ever going to improve if all their problems are solved with US dollars, US jobs and US social services. Danny, you should write about exactly WHAT Fox has done for Mexicans in the way of health care, education, job creation or environmental protection. I guarantee it would be the shortest column you ever wrote.

Great points 10:36. The MSM has done an abysmal -- or should I say almost nonexistent -- job pointing out the failings of Fox and the inherent weaknesses, deceptions, and tremendous costs of the Senate's MASSIVE amnesty plan. John and Ken had one of Fox's former campaign aides on who outlined how Fox has been an utter failure for the Mexican people.

Let's do our best to lobby the House and defeat the terrible Senate bill ! Now is the time..

This Fox guy is being treated by the press like AL SHARPTON. The press doesn't report the truth about them. We can't believe the press anymore. They're so busy making up the story to get their byline or mug on TV they will say and do anything. Whores...

What a bunch of weak men we have in our city. This asshole Fox comes into LA and TELLS US how to treat him and what NOT to ask and Antonio agrees. How dare he ignore the immigration problem. I hope everyone sees what a weak Mayor we have. Sure he loves photo ops but as far as leadership he's a joke.

Supervisor Burke introduced an issue at the board meeting to change the county employment application. She would like the county to omit the question asking "Have you have ever been arrested." Ok, now you might be thinking well it's alright, why not leave it off the application and if the person is seriously going to be considered for a position they can always go back and ask it and investigate it then. Well the problem is they won't, because that will be deemed not politically correct. My problem with this is why it's no longer important to know the personal history of an employee when considering them for employment?

Anon: Just this week a mom was on the news sayng she is suing a bar for having a convicted felon working as bartender who killed her daughter.

Can Antonio really be this ignorant? No wonder he failed the bar 4 times.
...Our city is enlivened by the largest concentration of Mexicans living outside of Mexico City."..
"I am the mayor of Los Angeles and the areas I can deal with are trade and tourism and investments," Villaraigosa said. "Immigration is a national policy. I have made my views clear. I do support a pathway to citizenship." ...It would be presumptuous for a mayor of a city to interject himself into foreign affairs with a visiting head of state, he said.

Protesters at City Hall said they did not believe Villaraigosa should be meeting with Fox...Najee Ali of Project Islamic Hope and Earl Ofari Hutchinson of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable said Fox should only be meeting with federal officials, who have the authority to negotiate trade pacts.

Not surprising AV spits out the tired line that illegal immigration is a "federal" or "national issue" -- the classic dodge of local pols. With his sordid mecha past, getting rid of destructive sanctuary city policies will never even be on the mayor's radar.

Furthermore, what IS presumptuous and deplorable is Fox interjecting himself into US domestic politics.
I read a quote from him that said "we will never forget how you all have fought to overcome discrimination and to make a better life for your family" referring to Mexican illegals in the US. He better be referring to HIS government's incompetence, corruption, and discrimination directed against their own people and other Latin Americans ! Somehow with the nerve of this man I think not. GO HOME you failure; you have NO credibility !!

That whole "helps the US economy" myth has been pretty nicely debunked by a few media outlets the past few weeks as this argument heats up. Wish I could recall the stats but basically it said the price of immigrant-picked vegetables would only go up 10-12 cents a pound, construction costs wouldn't even be a blip - it's not the payroll that raises costs these days, it's environmental requirements, permits, materials.

One thing no one ever points out when talking about how illegals "help" the economy is the sudden widening of the wealth gap the last 10-15 years. A major reason for the staggering wealth of top 5% of US execs is directly linked to their continuing suppression of wages. Thirty years ago you didn't see CEO's earning 4000 times that of their entry-level employees. But today there are CEO's earning 25-100 million in a CRAPPY earnings year yet they're cutting salaries and staff. How many of you out there know people being offered less now for the same job they did 5 and 10 years ago? And doing their job along with 2-3 jobs their former colleagues used to do? Where is Marie Antoinette when we really need her!

9:41 is right on! Can anyone picture the backlash if an Israeli leader, an Arab leader, or God forbid the President of France came to the US and chastized us in this manner?

But the real problem, ladies and gentlemen, is that in the last few elections - state AND federal - white and black voting declined while hispanic voters turned out in record numbers. I have no idea how many are new citizens or long-time citizens but for whatever reason they are voting and they are voting for "their kind". How many latino names can you spot in the legislature in Sacramento, forget about LA! While we all try to be progressive, unbiased modern people and tell ourselves it doesn't matter, they'll serve all the people, we are idiots and we have been had. Add that to the liberal assholes like Ted Kennedy - who wouldn't know a Mexican by first AND last name if you gave him a bottle of Dewar's - and the middle-class American who thinks we should be allowed to maintain our culture which has worked so well for so many other ethnic groups who have come here..well, you can see that we don't have a shot.

And if you think we're outnumbered now, remember that all the kids the Mexican are having here are citizens automatically. So in 18 years or less, they will be the majority and Spanish will be the official language and whites and blacks and Asians will be birthed out of jobs, homes, and opinions.

DAILY NEWS
Start with mayor
Re: "Mayor resurrects office to assist immigrants regardless of status" (May 24):

We vote in a mayor whose only goal, it seems, is to protect the illegal population with funding from the legal citizens. Our mayor is pressing to resurrect the Office of Immigrant Affairs to assist new illegal arrivals to L.A. If they are not here legally, the office should not be available to them.

What is our mayor doing for the legal citizen? I'm tired of seeing him abuse his office to turn our city into a mess. He participates, aids and encourages illegals' groups and gatherings. Why isn't he working on citizens' needs? I think it's time to get rid of all these bad influences let's start with our mayor.
