ZeeMan: Chris Arellano Withdraws

3 p.m., LAWeekly blog:

Second-place school board candidate Christopher Arellano, whose campaign was rocked by revelations about his past and on the verge of losing the endorsement of the powerful teachers’ union, officially pulled the plug Tuesday on his stalled campaign, telling supporters and union leaders that he will step aside in the race to replace former board member Jose Huizar.

The decision immediately threw into question the June 6 runoff election...

For some background, read, uh, our 11 a.m. post, immediately preceding this one.

UTLA head A.J. Duffy offers a really bizarre concession statement to ZeeMan:
“Quite frankly, I would think that whoever moves up [to second place], I don’t think it would be wise for anybody to go into this race at this point,” Duffy said. “With 47 percent of the vote and the backing of a popular mayor and a popular councilman, you’re really fighting an uphill battle.”

First off, you wonder what he means by "whoever moves up" and "anybody"...like it's an open draw? Enrique and Ana are going to draw straws?

Secondly, you wonder why he's suddenly so very awestruck by the Mayor's office, whose candidate drew four percent of the total electorate in this election...

Viva Gasca

Say NO to the Junk Food Queen.

Let's hope AJ "I don't do background checks on my candidate" Duffy realizes he can win with Gasca.

Look, like it or not, AV is extremely popular and though most folks didnt vote, any person that AV is supporting, has a huge advantage. The candidate still needs money, some brains, a resume etc, but, with this Mayors support, they will usually win.

Frankly, I like it that AV is getting involved in these races. He has got political capital and he is using it!

Duffy's amazing.

The best was him arguing Arellanos 'side' on KCRW.

Similar to Arellano...Alex Padilla will withdrawal from his race once some serious stuff comes out on his ass (plus the lack of endorsement of somebody big).

A.J Duffy should be ashamed of himself. He should at least try and make the perception that he supports his union instead of Antonio. "AV popular" where???? You go to meetings anywhere in the city and all you hear is what the hell has our Mayor done since being in office almost a year. A lot of people are now realizing they got fooled into voting for an "empty suit" with a big white smile.
